Default Risks involved in Rapid Weight Loss

    Hey All-

I've recently gone through some terribly trying times and have been taking out all my anger and sadness at the gym. You guys know how depression goes, you can barely eat. But you feel as if you have to keep moving to get your mind off of things. So as a result, I've done about 18 hours of cardio and weight training in the span of about 6 days. Consequently I have lost 7 lbs this past week. I figured that what I am doing is healthy-I do stage performances on top of this and I have dropped two pant sizes. Am I doing more harm than good? It really is the best thing I have in terms of therapy......any suggestions? Should I moderate it more? I definitely don't want to gain any of the weight back and hope to lose maybe 6 more pounds.

Depression is a very bad thing and you should go somewhere and get help for it. No matter how bad or not so bad you think it might be. Depression for some comes and goes. Lets hope you have the kind of depression that something can fix it and not the kind that will control your life. To control your depression you may need to talk to someone or take a drug of some kind. Lets hope its not that bad.

With that much exercise, you probably converted stored energy into muscle mass and burned off some water in the process. Do not be worried if you gain back a pound or two of water weight if you cut back on the exercise.

It is probably too fast only if you keep losing weight that way. This is not a reccomendation but if you cut back to a quarter of the exercise and keep it up for a month you should be golden. For me, the ultimate weightloss system is to move. Everytime I have moved I lost 7-10 lbs, between the worry and exercise.

Of the depression, it's not a chemical balance. It's just been a really tough month. I had to do something. I used to do drugs so now I am avoiding a psychiatrist so as not to develop any habits. Maybe it would be best if I upped caloric intake. I love the visible results though!

I would just suggest making sure you eat something however small (and hopefully healthy) 6x/day. That way at least your body has fuel to burn while doing all this activity. Otherwise, make sure you warm up and cool down and just take note of how your body feels so as to avoid hurting yourself. Getting an injury where you can't train or dance can really make you depressed!

Juliette i am not sure about the amount of weight lost in the week for you, 7 lbs you say. I have heard of people doing this for an upcoming fitness competetion.

The part i don't like is you are saying you are depressed and are not eating, and have to keep moving. I think you are hitting the gym for all the wrong reasons hun.

Eat, be a grazer, meaning many small foods through out the day, keep the vitamins coming, and above all, ask one of the instructors at the gym if you are going about this weight lose program correctly.

I know for many depression can be a passing pain, and many do get through the tough times without meds. You know your body better than we do. But hun....Don't let this turn into another problem. Say perhaps anorexia. Eat! DrinK! And consult with an instructor about your weight lose. Be honest these people usually have an eye for someone going at it hard, and see the weight coming off of people fast too.

Just ask for direction, Take care, and get over the hump safely.

I may be wrong but you may be burning muscle instead of fat, which will too, make you skinnier, just not the skinny ya want. When you do the cardio at the gym, set the settings to FAT BURN not cardio and keep your target heart rate in the zone... you will burn FAT not muscle, which is what ya want im assuming right? Be careful, I have seen a ton of people work out too much on cardio and burn their muscle, instead of fat and they end up skinnyfat. (ya know thin, but with NO muscle and still have cellulite and stuff)
Hope this is easy to understand cause sometimes I type to fast lol
    Good luck!

Juliette, there definitely is a risk to losing weight too fast. First of all you have to develop a program that will help you reach your goal at a safe pace. Do not stray from that program.
There is this health site called Real Age that offers advice and tests on fitness practices. I took it and it told me I was working out 9 times harder than would give maximum benefits. You have to give your system a rest otherwise you are actually losing progression.
First thing is to develop a good program custom designed to your body.

Too much cardio can wear down your immune system. Make sure you get plenty of calories from good sources (vegetables, fruits, lean meats), drink lots of water, and take your vitamins.

I really think that right there sums it up the best. You sound as if you weren't going about this weight loss thing to lose weight in the first place. Just a result of "controlling" your depression. And since you mention weight traing as part of what you're doing, I wouldn't worry about lost muscle. This was just probably a big shock to your system, and yes, you can overdo the exercising. Slow it down, make sure you're getting enough fuel, and try relaxing more. I just picked up a yoga book for at home. Give that a shot! I don't think you can overdo it on the yoga. Plus I bet it'll really give you a peace of mind. I really hope things start looking up for you!

You probably just jump started your system. When people don't work out and they start to, they will lose a lot of weight in the first 1 or 2 weeks. Then the weight loss will slow way down. The same thing will happen if you drastically change your eating habits and workout habits all at once. Montythegeek is right, it should only be a problem if you keep losing weight that fast.

I think that you are doing okay. I know you have to deal with tramatic events, and exercise is a good way of dealing. You may be overexercising, but there are a lot worse ways of dealing, and if it is helping your mind, then it can't be that bad. Just try to eat more Juliette! And don't let the overtraining last to long.
