I think hair extensions may be worth it if your hair is in poor condition or quite short. Having hair you like is a confidence booster.

A few months ago I tried a new hairstyle and was upset with the short layers in the front of my hair. So..I got extensions done to fill in the layered part and lengthen my hair.

The type of extensions I had done were Great Lengths, and I've been very satisfied with the results. They are quite expensive, but they also last longer (approx 6 mos or more) than other types. I paid $1, 600 for mine, but my stylist told me the same procedure can cost up to $4, 000 in California, so the cost varies.

Maintenance is pretty easy. There is a solution that I have to spray on my hair after getting out of the shower that helps to protect the bonds from tap water. They can tangle, but so can regular hair, so that is really not that much of a hassle. Just make sure the bonds don't get in knots. I have had them for two months now, and have had maybe 5 or 6 pull out, not the bonds, but from the scalp. It sounds worse than it is, just happens from repeated pulling and stress. Be careful with that, and the extensions should stay until you want them to go.

As for money, I find that I do get a lot more attention with the hair because mine is very light blonde and just past my breasts. It looks good on stage and attracts attention in the club. Before my extensions, I always had to pull the top part back because of the stupid layers I had. I am definitely happy with the results, despite the cost. It was worth it. $1,600 sounds like a lot of money, but if you think about it, it is what 3-4 nights of work max? Not that bad for the benefits.

Here is the link to the Great Lenghts website--
    http://www.greatlengths.net/en/index.html

And here is the salon locator if you want to find a stylist in your area--- http://www.greatlengthsusa.com/csig/.../gl/index.html

Hope some of this was helpful!

Girl what type of weave do you have that is worth $1,600?!

Memaidz, getting extentions is good, if you want a new change to your look. Now what Jayln said about getting them if your hair is in poor condition is actually VERY VERY INCORRECT! When you have any type of process to your hair ( in this case extentions) Your hair should be in very good shape. Extenstions cause alot of stress to the hair shaft. An already damaged head will just mean clumps falling out later.

What I would suggest you do before looking into any hair procedures is to research it fully. Then go in for a CONSULTATION!! That is key, espcecially when getting a weave done. You need to know who is doing your hair, and what qualifications she/he has under his belt.

In between doing research, and finding a reputable stylist, I would also suggest you start conditioning your hair. I dont know your hair type, but deep conditioning your hair is always good. I do alot of hot oil treatments, deep conditioning treatments, cholesterol treatments, and protein packs to my hair. My hair is very strong and healthy, and I do my own hair ( quick weaves) which can really cause damage to the hair shaft and scalp if not put in correctly.

I hope this helps..anymore questions, please post, and I'll give you some more info.

Since $1,600 is NOT cheap to me, even if it is real hair, I prefer comb-in falls and clip-on ponytails. The ponytails are getting pretty popular, and a few guys are finally starting to get suspicious that its fake, but most don't know or care.

For me, a long-hair fall for anglo texture hair runs $45-60 and will last a year if kept in good conditiion.

Ponytails run $30-$50 and I have one that still looks good after 2 years......

BUT, if I do go back to dancing full time, those Great Lengths are the way to go if you have the money.....

Short hair is cool if you have a VERY beautiful face, like Halle Berry, etc. Otherwise....go long, its most guy's fantasy!!!!

Sorry, I want to clarify myself. When I said "poor condition" I was referring to a bad hairstyle or something like that, not the quality of the hair itself. I shoudl of phrased myself differently. You are right cinnamonkisses.

And yes, $1, 600 is a lot for extensions, but I decided to get Great Lengths despite the cost because they use real hair, the bonds are formulated to have very little damage to the scalp, and that type of extension lasts at least 2x longer than other varieties.

When I considered fusion extensions, they were going to cost $800 and last 3 months, compared to mine which last at least twice as long for twice the cost. The Great Lengths also would not damage my hair as much as glue-in or braids.

The Great Lengths aren't for everyone, and yes it was a lot of money at one time, but it was worth it for me. They're the best extensions out there, IMO. These are the types that celebrites often get for movie roles, etc.

I've had Great Lengths and Cinderella Hair extensions put in as highlights. They cost me $20/ streak!!! They look so nice and lay so well, though, that I didn't mind paying for it. For the record, my hair is very straight, long, anglo hair.

A cheaper and more temporary option that I've seen a girl at work use is the Rachel Welch hair extension system. She gets a lot of mileage and versatility from that kit.

Where are you located Jayln?? I've heard of Fusions lasting from 6-9 months?! But Fusion is very damaging as well. I would consider getting this process done though, if I know that they were very experienced in this form of hair extension.

Cinnamonkisses-- I dance in Detroit MI, and this what I was quoted by two salons. Maybe it is different where you are. I'm sure extension vary in process and type.

BB you can always give it a try, they are not permanant so you can always remove them..... I DO love you with short hair though

I had weave and various extensions from the age of 12 to 17.... i had fusion extensions when i was 14 and i had them in for 5mnths, they didnt damage my hair but i know with some ppl they do.

A few years ago i cut my hair and had it very similar to BB's about 2 weeks later i had weave put in and had it weaved for the next 18mnths and grew it natural ( no relaxer)...... when i took the weave out my hair was passed my shoulders and now its down my back. I don't relax it now i just texturize it. So yes weave and extensions can do wonders for your hair but be sure to get them done by someone who knows what they are doing, bcos i know girls who have had their hair weave and lost hair bcos of it!

    Seraya~

PS. oh and yes i aggre with cinnimon..... condition, condition, condition! and i'm talking DEEP condition.... I fav way to do this is to use egg, yes egg! mixed with treatment conditioners or hair mayonaise.

Last year I had fusion extensions (resin, not glue) put in strand by strand. 500 for the hair, and then 300 for the installation. My hair went from shoulder legnth to almost waist legnth, and looked great (think of the females in Pre-Raphaelite paintings). Made alot of money, but think it was mostly because it increased my confidence level. Lasted about two months, then had "refills" for a hundred to two hundred each time. Taking them out was a nightmare though....acetone was sprayed on my head, and then they were pulled out. I think it did some damage to my bleached (and then died back) hair, so am now leaving it natural. I don't regret it though. However, then my main excercise was swimming, and getting those damn things under a swimming cap five times a week was amusing to say the least. Now I wear a clip on pony tail, and am letting nature take its course.

Extensions can be alot of fun (I had blue streak highlights for awhile) and some guys really dug it. Research amd find what works best for you, and have fun!

I have fusion extensions (the glue-in kind) and I love them! I've been wearing them for almost a year and I think that they definetly help me make more money. It's probably just a confidence thing, but whatever, it helps!! They are also good if you want to experiment with color-I had hot pink streaks done. Be careful though-they are very addictive! I can't imagine not having long hair!! Good luck!!

Another option that might be available to you is the kind I have. They are sewn in and are a bunch of small "ponytails" on your head. It was 300.00 dollars for the first time, including the hair ( I went from shoulder to waist length ). It is about 150.00 for a tightening, which is about every two-three months for me. I take care of the hair extension like my normal hair and I use Goldwell KeraSilk conditioner on it. It has been over a year and I haven't had to have new hair yet. They have really lasted, but I take merticulous care of them. I get my hair colored and everything with them in.

I got mine from cyberparlor in NYC. They have a website so maybe you can ask them how to find it in your area if you are interested.

Being a bellydancer, hair made a big difference in money for me, since the traditional image of a bellydancer is one with long dark hair. www.cyberparlor.com

    Hi Lexi!

Yes, I have had different types of extensions through out my life ( I have the finest, thinnest hair in the world I think!!) and these have been the best so far for the price. Isaac (cyberparlor) works out of his apartment so I think that is why he can charge that kind of rate in NYC. I had to search and search to find him!! Give him a call or e-mail him. Tell me how it goes!

I've had the type of extentions that bellydancer uses. They were really cheap and popular when I live in Amsterdam....

The problem is that they are pretty uncomfortable...and its harder to wash and brush your hair..you can't get conditioner or hair styling product directly into the attach part.

I recommend using them for thickness rather than length...all extentions are SUPER expensive in Austin...or at least in my experience...

Good Grief!! I'm on the website right now, looking at the guys "weave" it looks really good! I'm trying to picture, exactly how this "ponytailing" of the hair works. I wouldn't mind going to NY to get this! Bellydancer, how easy was it for you to shampoo/condition your hair?

    Hi cinammon kisses!

I haven't had any problems washing and conditioning. I shampoo my own hair and the attachments my usual way but use very little shampoo on the weave itself. I then use the Goldwell conditioner on the weave. I wash my hair every other day. I don't have any problems brushing or styling it.

Like Katrine said, it is uncomfortable for a day or two after a tightening but nothing that I found too annoying. And sometimes the ties to the ponytails can show when you have an updo when you are grown out and need a tightening.

I'll try to give you a visualization on the ponytails. He does little ponytails in a horizontial row, then a layer of your own hair to cover them, then another row of ponytails and on and on. I have three rows of ponytails on my head, like I said, my hair is superfine and thin.

I guess I do look like I am really hard selling this type of weave - and cyberparlor - but I have had other weaves and this has been the best option for me, for the money. Figure I would pass the word!

BTW, cinammmon, I LOVE your B & W photo here on SW !!

For hair growth and to give the hair a rest i prefer weave-on but for a more natural look and diversity i prefer fusion.
