Hopefully you have also made some estimated tax payments throughout 2003. You CAN take your records of income, expenses and estimated tax payments into H&R Block and have them do your tax return, but I highly recommend using a CPA who is more experienced in preparing tax returns for independent contractors / self-employed persons.
I agree with B and Mel, but arrive at the suggestion of going to a "real" accountant this year for a different reason. You need to get your financial act off on a solid footing and learn the rules on what is correct and how to do things in terms of organization, forms, schedules. It is too late to go back and change your actions for 2003, but with help you can have everything in better shape a year from now. These things would have been better to much earlier, and you may have done some. If you wait until April, you not only are facing the crush of late filers going to accountants, but you are also likely to have been doing things less than correctly for a third of the year. Chalk to cost up to your "education", but this is also a deduction.
Whats a cpa, and how do I find one?

Certified Public Accountant and you can find them in the phone book, or through recommendations. it's basically a tax preparer.

you can also go to accountantsworld.com or 1800accountant.com or several other sites that will give you accounting directories. The website for your local chamber of commerce may also have listings.

CPAs are much more than tax preparers. If you want a tax preparer, go to H&R Block. A CPA should be able to help you in all aspects of your financial life. They should be able to help with retirement planning, estate planning, college planning, preparing financial statements, business valuations, analyzing transactions and many other things. And yes...tax preparation. However, saying "it's basicaly a tax preparer" is an insult to my profession.Originally Posted by Emily link=board=6;threadid=5692;start=msg65056#msg65056 date=1074674063
