Default am a a responsible stripper?

I know this might sound odd but i wanted to know if you fellow dancers think I am using my stripper years wisely? I am 22 now and have been dancing a year and a half already. So far thease are the things I have accomplished since my carrer started.

    Payed off 5,000 in debt.

Put 5,000 down on a 17,000 new car.

Finnished 9 credits already in school for my medical assisting degree and am currently attending.

I guess what I am wondering is am I spending my money wisely? I'm sure after a year and a half of dancing some girls put 20% down on a home by now. I know my time is limited in this buisness so I want to be gaining the things I need for the future at a good rate. I do spend some money invesing in dancer clothes and costurmes put to make money you have to spend money right? I do pretty well I think for my club and area. I rarly leave with under 300 a night. Are my financal goals being met fast enough.? What do you think girls?

Well, Lilac, everything is relative. From one viewpoint, you haven't really "wasted" any money, you invested $5,000 in paying down your most expensive debt, you (partially) purchased a dependable new car, and you are making progress towards a college degree (for which I assume you also paid tuition).

On the other hand, if you have been dancing for 18 months, averaging say 3 nights per week at $300 per night, you have earned a gross income of $ 70,000 leaving perhaps $45,000 net income after taxes for that 18 month period. Approximately $15,000 of this was spent on your back bills, your car down payment and your tuition, meaning that you spent $30,000 in 18 months or $20,000 per year on costs of living. IMHO this is not at all excessive.

However, as you pointed out, the "dancer's clock" is ticking away. Earning at your present levels and continuing to dance part time while you take college courses is NOT resulting in an ability to save or invest significant amounts of money. This is fine if your plan is to quit dancing as soon as you obtain your degree and start building a lifelong career as a medical assistant and if prevailing pay rates for medical assistants will provide you with adequate future income to achieve everything you desire in life.

However, I know from my own experience as a Respiratory Therapist that prevailing pay rates were only adequate to cover a "minimum" lifestyle, with insufficient earnings potential to allow saving for the down payment on an average priced home while paying rent, utilities and making payments on a semi-decent car at the same time. While I absolutely loved the personal fulfillment of working as a Respiratory Therapist, I also had to accept the fact that it was dooming me to a life of living from one paycheck to the next. I realized that the only way to break out of this syndrome was to save up some serious money from dancing, to purchase that house and dependable car outright and avoid monstrous monthly payments, to establish investments etc. so that when I finally retired from dancing that I could again be a Respiratory Therapist but without dooming myself to a life awash in debt.

While i agree with Melonie, there are many many ladies who just want to make "easier" money, pay off debts, get into a better job, and get out of dancing.

Some dancers get wrapped up in the whole scene, and seem to blow the money, you are doing alot with your money, and yes i believe quick enough!

Nothing wrong with wanting to make some money, and get out to a career.

    More power to ya!

I agree with Melonie; it sounds to me like you've been very responsible with your money. And I also agree with her that it may be difficult for you to transistion from dancing to a regular job after you finish your training, and if you're only attending school part time, you won't be able to save much to offset the realities of a paycut when you're ready to move on. In this scenario, you may wind up like alot of girls who 'quit' dancing to enter their 'real' jobs after graduation, and after a good dose of reality, end up back in the club because the money sucks in most of those real jobs - at least for a new entrant into the field. You have to put it time and work you way up to decent pay levels in the real world, and it takes longer than it does in dancing. It's not like dancing where you can go in and learn your game and begin making great money immediately as a result. You have to PROVE that you're learned you game in the real world and get those raises and promotions slowly. Many girls find that distasteful after having been able to raise their earning potential at lightning speed.

Of course there are girls who get themselves started with dancing by saving a large down payment on a house, paying off debts, paying off the car, and save a bit also, so that the transistion to a regular job is easier. You can live more comfortably on the lower pay if you have your car paid off, no other debt, a relatively low mortgage payment due to having made a large down payment, and some money earning interest in a retirement fund or other investment(s). Some girls also continue dancing 1-2 nights a week after getting those real jobs, to make up for the lower paycheck until they either get into a better paying position, get married, or save enough from dancing so they don't need that extra money anymore. If you can manage to get yourself debt free except for a low mortgage payment and put a little money away before graduation, you could easily live on your regular paycheck and dance occasionally and save all or most of that. Even dancing 1 night per week, if you manage to save $300/week as a result and just live on your regular paycheck, that adds up to about $15k saved in 1 year. Not bad.

Then again, the prospect of dancing full time and bringing in more money, saving all the extra and leaving with no debt, a low mortgage payment (or none at all) and a fat bank account such that you could retire and live on the interest if you desired sounds damn good to me!

It all depends on what your long term goals are. But I don't think you're being irresponsible or wasting your money at all.

The thing to realize is that, unless you prepare yourself today for something else that's lucrative, you won't always be making the money that you make now. Buying things should take a back seat to investing in your future. You also don't want to get in a big spending habit. Sounds to me like you already know all this and are doing it right.

Paying off debt, buying a house, saving money, paying off a decent car that will last for years IS investing in your future. School isn't the only form of investment in the future.

Go to a bank, stockbroker or other financial institute and consult with a financial consultant. Tell them your goals, short range and long range. They can probably come up with a workable plan. Most of all think about what you want to do after your strip career. Good luck.

Have you visited the "Dollar Den" folder? If you visit that folder it will give you a great place to start so you can be a SS (Smart Stripper) not the other form of SS (Stupid Stripper).

Lower your living expenses, accumulate good debt (not all debt is bad - good debt is debt that allows you to build up a PASSIVE income) and get to a point where your passive income surpasses your living expenses.

If you have read any Rich Dad, Poor Dad books you will understand what I mean.
