    Default making dancer clothes

I want to start making my own dancer costumes and clothes, but I cannot find any patterns to get me started. Does anybody out there know of a website or a store were I can get patterns to do this. I think I could save a lot of money and end up getting what I really like and not having to settle for something that comes close. I went to some fabric stores but they did not have anything that came close. I really need some help.

Flamerose I came to the same conclusion as you, and since I've begun dancing again I've made 80% of my costumes. I have a small clothing line that I sell at boutiques here in Atlanta (not dancers clothes) so I have lots of experience in pattern design. If you can't make patterns on your own, then you will probably need to buy a few outfits and create the paper pattern using the old outfit. Make sure the two fabrics have a similar stretch (percentage and directional) If you knit or crochet, I have patterns available on my website http://www.r3es.com/flakychick
and if you live in my area I teach sewing/kniitting/crochet and pattern making-see my site- and could set up a class specifically with dancer gear in mind.

Hope you find what you are looking for!
BTW I have a really cool crafty project for the "sporty spice" girls among us. It's for a thong bottom out of a regular t-shirt. If there is any interest for it I'll do up a step-by-step on the forum for it.

There aren't really any retail patterns for dancewear out there - you have to do as Nina said and make your own pattern or copy it from an existing outfit. You can also try to alter a pattern to turn it into stripperwear.

I want to see the T-shirt thong pattern, Nina! I knit some hot pants and am working on designing a knitting pattern for a thong bikini.

Flame the other girls have already said it, you have to make your own patterns for stripper gear. If you're new to sewing you should try simple things first like tube dresses. Turn a dress you have wrongside out and use that to trace a pattern with large sheets of tissue paper, or I think you can get other pattern papers at craft stores, but tissue paper works for me - it's like what most retail patterns are made of anyway.

I'd like to see the t-shirt thong pattern too! I am making some outfits now and looking for new thong ideas.

yes, I too would like to see the tshirt thong instructions. In Addition to copying existing costumes, keep in mind that alot are simply very basic patterns. ie: variations of the tube dress, triangle tops, flippy skirts made from a large circle etc...

An easy way to jazz up otherwise 'boring' plain tube dress styles, for those of us who aren't expert seamstresses, is to add touches like rhinestones and beads and use different colored / printed fabrics. It adds interest without causing headaches.

Make sure you get the proper needle for stretch/knit fabrics - Schmetz makes good needles for lycra. Sewing with lycra isn't like sewing with other fabrics - it's slippery and can be frustrating especially when you are trying to attach elastic.

Vogue Patterns has a lot of dresses in their eveningwear section that could easily be adapted as dancer gowns.

Kwiksew has patterns that can be adapted into dancewear. Once you have the basic bodice, adding a skirt is easy:

A good place for fabrics (a little expensive though):
    www.sewsassy.com

And a book that teaches you how to draft bikini patterns:
