Default Looking for a new cell phone...any suggestions?

    Hi all,

I know this has nothing to do with dancing, but I'm sure a lot of you have cell phones so I figured I'd ask. I currently have a Motorola V60 cell phone. It's small and cool looking and at first I liked it, but now I'm tired of it. I've had it for almost 2 years. First of all, it works like shit in my apartment. Sometimes when I'm talking to someone, I'll get disconnected or it will be so staticky that I can barely hear them. People always tell me that it sounds like I'm on a cell phone. Also, the antenna breaks very easily. It's already broken once (it only cost me $10 to get it fixed, but it's an inconvenience) and it looks like it's about to break again. I take good care of my phone, but the antenna still breaks easily.

Which cell phones are you happy with, and which ones have you tried that aren't so good? I'm looking for something that will work well in my apartment since I do not have a home phone. Price does not really matter, although I don't need one with a lot of gizmos and gadgets (i.e. I don't need to check my e-mail from my phone or anything like that). I just want a simple phone that will come in clearly, not break easily, and that hopefully looks kinda cool too. Oh, also if you can, let me know which cell phone companies you like and which ones you don't like. I currently go through Cellcom and I'm pretty satisfied with them. However, I may switch companies if I find a good deal. Thanks in advance for your help.

I go thru U.S. Cellular, and I guess they're ok. But I have an LG phone. Best I've had yet. Great reception and battery life. It's a nice sleek little flip phone too. I really think Nokia phones are overrated. I guess the LG's are gaining quite a bit of poularity too.

I don't know much about cell phones since I haven't even used one in over a year, but about the reception in your apartment: I think that may not be a problem with your phone. I've had the same problem in some apartments, the same way I got poor reception in some stores and in malls. The building security interferes with the phone's signal, and I don't think a different phone will be much better, if any. When I carried cell phones I had that problem with EVERY one I ever used over the course of 6 or so years.

But there may have been improvements that I'm unaware of. It may pay to go to your phone company and ask about that. I once had a phone that started getting really poor reception almost all the time, and I took it in while going to pay the bill once, and they said it needed a software upgrade - it's free and they do it periodically. It took less than 5 minutes and when I left the building, my reception was instantly better.

We got a Samsung VGA 1000 picture phone a few months ago through Sprint. The other phone we have is a basic Nokia and it doesn't even roam in Sprint non coverage areas. I work and travel a lot in the Central Dakotas and Montana where Sprint has no coverage. On the new phone we get an analog roam signal or digital roam signal everywhere, so I definately believe that getting a high end phone that has strong reception capabilities nationwide is important.

This phone runs $259.99 but had a $160 rebate when adding service. For an existing customer to switch phones the full price of the phone is charged up front but some companies offer a mail in rebate of maybe half it's cost which takes about 6 weeks to receive.

As soon as money picks up I plan on replacing the Nokia phone as well with another one like this. it works a whole lot better and the signal is clearer when talking.

As far as cell phone carriers Verizon seems to be the best as they have the largest coverage areas in the nation. I would consider going with them but am still under contract with Sprint.

Ive been with Verizon for years. Ive found their coverage to be very good at least all over the eastern US and into southern Canada. Pricewise they are competitive. They are willing to negotiate also.

My phone is just a cheap Audiovox. I dont have any bells and whistles. It does voice and text messaging which is all I need.

i have always had samsung and never had a problem with their phones on the other hand a few years ago i had service with sprint and to tell you sprint sucks azz when it comes to sevice (in my opinion )...plus they have the worst customer care i have ever came across ...thus i say the phone depends on the service provider you are with ..try do a search to see which companies are good in your area ..i live in new york and so far i can say the better service providers are verizon , t-mobile and nextel leaving cingular ,att, and sprint at the bottom of the list ..i have t-mobile have had them for about three years now and i must say that i'm satisfied with their service and customer care ....i have to agree with saphire about getting a flip phone ...i had that same thing happened to me too with the phone picking up by itself or dialing out numbers by itself even though some (phones) might have a lock feature ...l think you could also check out www.howardforums.com good luck hope you find a phone that fits your taste

I have the 4400 lg phone which I've been very happy with. As far as some of you static problems that has to do with certain buildings depending where you are the cell phone carrier makes a difference. I had sprint which works great in major cities but is horrible else where. A few of my friends are with AT&T they seem to be working well and the same with T-Mobile. But I still find Verizon works the best everywhere in the continental U.S. I guess let me know if you have any other questions. I would also reccomend and external car antenna for better recepetion as well with any phone.

    Thanks for your help everybody!

I'm still not sure which phone I want to get yet, but this got me off to a good start.

It is true that you get poor reception in some apartment buildings no matter what type of cell phone you are on, but I think the problem is with my phone or my phone company. When I was dating my ex-boyfriend, his cell phone worked fine in my apartment. He also had a Motorola V60 but he went through a different phone company (AT&T).

I've never had a cell phone before. I was wondering about how much on average one costs, and about how much the monthly bills are. I don't spend all day on the phone as some girls do. I guess just a normal amount of time. I don't need fancy things either. Just a simple phone that works well.

Years ago I used to be with Sprint PCS and had nothing but reception problems. I switched to a new carrier and they were even worse. Some friends of mine who were with Sprint and they said the service got much better so I switched back. My experience so far for the last year has been really quite good here in Vegas. There is a few dead spots in the valley, but overall their installing new towers everywhere has really helped. I even think Vorizon Wireless uses the same towers and just leases bandwidth from Sprint. I use a Samsung A460 flip phone and it workes great. I think Sprint has the new version of this phone by Samsung and I'm not completely sure of the number, but a friend has it and likes it a lot also.

Cell service experiences really varry from person to person, but so far, Spring PCS with this phone has worked well for me.

My phone cost $250 ($200 after a $50 mail-in rebate), but that was 2 years ago and it was one of the most popular phones at the time. It has gone down in price since then. Prices on cell phones vary a lot depending on how fancy of a phone you want to get. You can get a basic cell phone for $100 or less. Some cell phone companies run specials once in a while where they give you the phone for free if you sign a 1 year or 2 year contract.

My monthly bill is around $40 each month, which isn't bad considering my cell phone is my only phone. I have 1100 minutes per month, if I go over 1100 minutes I am charged extra. I'm not much of a phone talker, so I've never even come close to using all 1100 minutes. But I got the 1100 minutes because the plan with the next lowest minutes only had 100 minutes, and I knew that I would use more than 100 minutes per month.

Good point to mention. My phone was free with me signing up for a 2 year contract. Normally it was a $150 phone. One suggestion is when you find a plan and phone that works for you, see if you can find someone that lives in your area (as reception can vary) who may be with the same provider. This will usually give you a good indication as to whether they are happy with their service, the reception, dropped call amounts, etc. Then, when you find a phone you like, go to a source for reviews like Consumer Reports or www.epinions.com for reviews from everyday people. With this combination of information, you'll be well versed to make a good choice. This can be a difficult decision because if you sign a contract, you'll be locked in to using that same service and phone for a prolonged period of time so be armed with as much information before you sign the contract. The worst case scenario though is if you absolutely hate your phone or service, you can always back out of the contract by paying a fee. Usually a month or two worth of service fees.

I don't like my Samsung. The screen went blank and the outside numbers are scrambled. Sprint reception has improved a great deal. I usually have decent customer service with them. I had Nextel for a few years. I thought their customer service was terrible. Which is why I dropped them. A CSR was extremely rude when I called about my bill. Two months in a row, they charged @$4o-60 for calls that was not made from my phone. I'm the only person that had access to the phone, so I know I didn't make the calls. End result, I had to have an attorney contact them. Long messy story. The reception was decent though. I have a friend that uses T-mobile, and that phone picked up in areas that my Nextel never would. Also, someone told me they went to the Carribean and their T-mobile still had clear reception. I think the company is the most important thing to consider. Then I would recommend a Motorola brand. I dropped mine on concrete several times and got it wet, it still worked. I thought I was going to have to run over the thing before I could collect a new one under the deductible.

Hi, i just upgraded to the newest Nokia. I love these phones, i drop them and get them wet at times, still work. Many different plans.

This is a shitty pic. It has all the bells and whistles, takes pictures too.
