    Default red head help!

any tips for makeup? i'm have long red hair some blonde highlights and i have a lot of trouble finding makeup that matches my colors. (clothes too - it seems that the only color ican get away with for outfits is black)

also any make up tips in general, somehow no matter how much i put on it looks like i'm not wearing anything, which gives me the rep of being very innocent and girl next doorish. not that it's bad, but sometimes i just wanna look sexy!

I'm a redhead, with blue eyes, and I like colors like copper, bronze, deep browns for the eyes, I even use auburn mascara. For a more made-up look, easiest I have found is simply the addition of black eyeliner, I line top and bottom inside lids, and a thin line on the outer top lid and blend so it's soft and smudgy.

I always go with lighter neutral colours by day, and slightly darker and dramatic at night, especially in a dark club, you want dramatic makeup.

Blondes and redheads should stick to lighter colors. Darker haired and skinned sisters can go with darker shades.

Light browns are great for us, as is a little pink on the cheeks, lips and brown mascara.

im a red head with blue eyes and i TOTALLY relate on finding colors that look good. As far as outfits go, i generally stick to black, but red and lavender are good colors for me. the right shade of blue or green works, but those specific colors that fit our type are hard to find in most costume stores.
i vamp up my makeup a lot, got the false lashes, black liner, a bit of shimmer and a pinkish shadow with pink/mauve blush and a light lipgloss. it seems to work for me. i dont do the whole "natural" thing with makeup while im dancing, if i did id probly look pretty young & innocent too.

I notice the red with blonde getting more popular these days. It seems a bit hard to pull off, maybe because it's something you don't see so much naturally. Also, it does come off as youthful, probably because you see strawberry blonde colors on children. A good red-blonde mix can look stunning, like fire.

I used to wear darker, auburn-red hair (henna over my dark blonde hair) and I have green eyes. I noticed that I needed warmer shades of makeup when I went redder.

For a sexy/sophisticated look, you might try getting bold with your lipstick. Try Revlon lipstick (the black tubes) "Go Chili" or "Exotica" -- maybe "Blackberry" -- somewhere in there. Sorry I don't know the numbers.. I tend to like to either emphasize my lips *or* my eyes... maybe try darker eyeliner and paler, glossy lips (sort of a 60's retro or rocker look). If I'm wearing red lipstick, I wear ligher (brown) mascara/liner.

I think black clothing can look striking with blonde or red hair. I think that, depending on the shade of your hair, greens can look stunning, but I've always liked green. I like to wear emeralds. If you're bold, try a chartruse-shade. Yow.

But with blue eyes, you might have good luck with bright blues.

Try bright reds (orangish never worked on me, but bright red can look great... I like red and black together).

I think a lot of the color stuff depends on your skin tone. I think that red hair can set an eye-popping contrast to brighter colors, but maybe that's just my 1980's upbringing talking. (Remember Cyndi Lauper? -- there's a girl that was not afraid of some color.)

Try silver. I personally am partial to silvers and greens.

Lavender can look fantastic with red/blond hair. I would wear it for eyeshadow, but don't like it for clothes because my skin tone has bluish undertones.

I'm a redhead, natural strawberry blond with blue eyes and fair, fair skin that freckles like the dickens.

    1) Darken your hair color. I went with a medium auburn, which still shows the golden highlights but is a less "childish" color. A good (expensive) professional conditioner will maintain hair quality in spite of dyes as well as softening it; coarse hair is usually a problem for redheads.

    2) Sunless tanner, sunless tanner, sunless tanner. If you're like me, then tanning is nigh impossible. Sunless tanner is my miracle cream; nice, light tan on skin that has never done more than freckle (eventually I get enough freckles that it looks like a tan from a distance... ewww.)

    3) Browns, greys, blacks for shadow, black for liner, rose for cheeks, full red lips (a brown-y red, not Hooker Red or orange-y reds). Dramatic colors dramatically applied (read the book Making Faces for help) can do wonders for any face.

    4) Hooker Red is a great clothing color for redheads, especially with gold accessories. Black looks stunning against fair skin, and if you do the tanner thing then white will look remarkable (lightly tanned skin, dramatic red hair on a pristine white gown... fantastic). Personally, my best color is gold. A shimmery gold will be quite stunning with red hair.

    thanks for the advice!

lilith - what kind of sunless tanner do you use? i'm always afraid to try stuff for fear of looking orange. i do tan really well (surprisingly), i get darker than some of the blondes i lifeguard with during the summer. i have a history of cancer in both sides of my family so i'm afraid to use beds etc.

also my hair isn't strawberry blonde. it's definitly a darker red, not like ehh i dunno bright bright red, but it's definitly not blonde.

ara - where do u find auburn mascara?

also any brands of eye liner that you guys like a lot? that doesn't wear off easily?

    thanks so much!

I only use LIQUID eyeliner...so much more dramatic! I use good ol' Loreal "Lineur Intense" and it says on all day (even through a mid-day shower if I'm careful not to rub my eyes).

As for a red-head...I've never seen anything more gorgeous than Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge. Get the liquid eyeliner and some really dark black eyeshadow with fake eye lashes. Just shadow the outside corner. It looks SOOOO beautiful! I started doing that with my own makeup (lighter on the black for day, darker for night). For variations, I'll highlight the inner corner of my lid with silver or a bright purple or blue, cover the black with a little dark purple and highlight right under the brow with some pink. Looks great with blue eyes!!!

Excellent Colors and advice, Lilith.. I think you've gotten inside my head.. lol.. The only things I don't do is the sunless tanning. I never can tan, and I just don't think one would look good on me, and coloring my hair. I used to detest that I was a redhead, but, it grew on me.. lol

I am no longer a red head ( had to grow it out for 2 yrs.) but I loved goldish eyeshadows, and black shadowliner (pencil can look harsh on redheads) and a lipstick by loreal or revlon, I'm not sure which ( black tube, flat top, 3 gold stripes around it) called rasin. Blot and put on Dr.Pepper chapstick for a little shine. Thickening and lengthening mascara, and a little rosey blush. Bronze colors made me look dirty. I also have brownish hazel eyes, so I think we probly have similar coloring. Golds made my eyes look yellowish, and really exotic. I loved doing cat eyes with the shadowliner.

I'm another seriously pale, natural red-head.

I've never been able to find an eyeshadow color that doesn't make me look ill, let me know if any of you find a good one!
The best lip colour i've found is the Clinique Moisture sheer lipcolour in Ruby Kiss - it's natural but still has a lovely colour.

I'm also allergic to fake tan lotions! Even tried the Dermalogica one and had a reaction to it.

In the end i just gave up and left my skin white, i even highlight it sometimes with the Revlon Skinlights powder, it looks great.

I'm a green eyed redhead... I wear a lot of blue, purple and deep cranberry colors.. but my very best color that I get the most compliments on is Gold or a carribbean orange color (not quite orange, not quite pink, but kinda a pinky orange color, plus it makes me look like I've got some color on me!) I get bored with black as well. In terms of makeup... when on stage, I wear browns, coppers and smoke eyeliner (black is too harsh against pale skin).. in terms of lipstick, I found a great color by Mary Kay (suede) its a deep brown red that is absolutely fabulous for that evening look, and I found a color by Loreal ( Nature's Blush) for a softer look.. Revlon has a color called Mulled cider that is a coppery color which is a shimmery color that looks awesome and Clinique's lipstick in Surprise is also one of my favorites. I wear a lot of browns in terms of eyeshadow's, but recently experimented with a really really low key deep smoke color to get that "sultry" look around my eyes and it looks great especially with my red hair and I can wear the colors with everything I have in my wardrobe. Hope this helps! Oh yeah, and I agree with the above post about the Skin lights.. I love that product!! It is great!
