To tan or not to tan that is the question?![]()

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that when you are trying to carry off the Barbie Doll Blonde look, that a tan is a mandatory part of the package. However, using tanning salon beds a couple of times a week for the 15-20 minutes necessary to maintain a tan is both bad for your skin and a pain in the butt. I purchased my own tanning bed, and do about 10 minutes worth of tanning every other day as part of my normal routine.

Used to live in the tanning bed..Now I use a self tanner by Sothys

I have tanned in the past, though not since I have become a dancer. It made me kind of an odd color. I have pictures of the summer before, and my natural tan look sooooooo much better. I'm wondering if mystic tan gives the same weird color that the bed does. I guess there's only one way to find out.

I tan once or twice a week, but I always try to put SPF30 on my face, everyday and before I go tanning. I also use self-tanner. In fact, I just started using a new one that work really great. It is by Body Drench and sold at Sally's for $20. It is an aerosol can and it gives a really great, even mist that looks very natural. My roommate and I spray paint our tans on each other! Also, you get a lot of uses (at least 15) for twenty bucks!
For those of you in the Vegas area, I'd encourage you to try air-brush tanning at Solairium on West Sahara. It's reasonably priced (full body is $45, lasts 1-2 weeks) looks a lot better than a spray, and isn't bad for your skin like tanning beds.
I hate signatures, but I love irony.
Well, I used to tan because I wore my hair blonde. And, it looked great with darker skin, but I stopped. I loved how it made me feel. I know a black dancer, who tanned regularly, she developed these freckles and her skin looked like orange leather, not so attractive..........

I tanned in the tanning beds 2-3 times a week for 5 years. Most of the time I would cover my face with a towel after about 3 mins of exposure. Now that I'm about to turn 26, I am already seeing signs of sun damage. So I quit the tanning salon completely about 3 months ago. Now I use self-tanners and I still get compliments on my tan all the time. I wish I would have made the switch looong ago.
I used to tan alot in the tannig beds but I recently switched to air brushing. But it fades really ugly around my big boobsSo now I may go back to tanning and self tanners. But I'm still going to put a towel over my face!!

I know that it is torture on my skin, but I try to tan a few times per week. I always buy one year unlimited packages at the tanning salon b/c it is the best deal that way. I get compliments on my tan all the time. I go for the color just as much as the 20 minutes of warmth (I live in the tundra of Buffalo and freeze my @ss off!!). I think I look soooo much better tan than the pasty white color I would be without the tanning salon.

Oh, how I love tanning, but I'm not doing it these days. I used to tan all the time without a care, then I started covering my face only cause I was noticing some wrinkles starting. Then I noticed that my chest was starting to show sun damage too, so I've been just using a self tanner for about the past 6 months.
I am pretty fair, and come from a family that burn easily, but for some strange reason I rarely burn and tan really well. I am bad though, cause I never use sunscreen in natural sunlight - even in Hawaii after a couple days I was out in the sun all day without sunscreen and just got beautiful brown. (Meanwhile my brother who lives there has to use sunscreen all the time or he burns like crazy)

note - the vast majority of the "sun damage" which is caused to the skin takes place because girls spend 20 minutes + in tanning beds which gives the skin a massive dose of UV in order to create/maintain a tan with only two sessions a week. If you limit the exposure time in the tanning bed to 10 minutes instead of 20, the level of skin damage is massively reduced. However, to maintain a tan this usually means 3 or 4 sessions a week instead of just 2. This is the reason that I bought my own tanning bed, to eliminate the hassle of travelling to a tanning salon.
melonie are you sure about that? ANY type of tan caused by UV light where the skin darkens is the result of damage to the skin.
I used to tan all the time, but I quit last year. I just use self tanner now.

Aside from the fact that it is very bad for your skin, that weird smell...Ewww! I don't know if it's the accelerator lotions or what but, no thanx. I'll take self tanner or the real thing, please.
I am lazy and I like to party

My auntie used a sunbed a lot to keep herself extremely brown. This had the unfortunate effect of making her skin look like leather at the age of 30

if i haven't tanned for a while, i start off going on the tanning bed for 6-9 minutes every day for 2 weeks so i get nice and dark (i have olive skin) and then i get an airbrush tan once or twice a week and continue to go on the sunbed once a week for 9 minutes. if i just use the airbrush with no base tan i go a bit of a funny colour, but if i combine sunbeds and airbrushing i get a really nice dark and natural looking tan.

I use a tanning bed 3 times a week. I cover my face with a towel to help prevent wrinkles, and I use a darker foundation and a bronzer so I don't have a pasty white face and a tan body.![]()
I use the UVA bed and I wear spf 45 on my face. I just started going to the tanning salon a couple of months ago for the first time in my life. I have used sunblock on my face every day since the age of 25. I am 36 now and people are usually very surprised when I tell them my age. The UVA bed is better for people with really pale skin like mine. I do 11 minutes on each side. Those other beds with lights on the top and bottome look scary to me. I hear that the UVB rays will cause more skin damage than the UVA rays.

I heard that putting a towel over your face only provides an SPF of 6! So I would definetly use a face lotion with sunblock of SPF30. Also once you have reached your desired darkness I dont think it is necessary to go more than once maybe twice a week for maintenance.

Really? I never knew that; I should start using sunblock on my face then. Thanks for the heads up.Originally Posted by fern link=board=5;threadid=5962;start=msg68944#msg68944 date=1075576943

Bring your own dark coloured towel to put over your face in addition to wearing sunblock or use a double layer of towels. Darker fabrics and denser cloth will up that SPF but can also get kind of hot.
Oh, and I love the UVA beds. My arms tend to freckle and I get a much more even colour in those beds.
