Default new houston stripper wannabe concerned about hiring biases.

hello. i've been reading some of the older threads, and have a couple of brief questions.

i've pretty much gone to clubs wearing miniskirts or minidresses and light/no makeup and asked to dance, and was told no. it must be noted that i'm a 5 feet tall, medium dark black girl who is curvy, but very tiny. basically i look like the stereotypical asian girl in eyes and build, but with more ass, heh. i also look like i'm in my late teens at best. now a lot of you mention 'auditions', and i never heard of any of that stuff going around clubs in this area. is that even relevant in houston, or should i just work on having great hair/makeup and looking older?

also, i am well aware of the extras issue in houston. are there other texas cities that are less touchy-feely, and if so, am i better off trying to find a couple clubs here to work at or should i travel to those other places and try my luck weekends?

i have no problem being nude or topless in crowds, nor with being on stage, i just keep getting told the club's not hiring when i came because they had an ad in the paper saying they were hiring. a lot of strippers have told me to come work at the club they're at, but when i get there, the manager always says no. sometimes i can't even get past the door girl to talk to a manager.

aside from taking some extra time to look my best, how can i cultivate some persuasive techniques to get on stage that night or day?

any help so appreciated, and sorry if this is long.

ps: another factor that might be involved was brought up by my boyfriend. not to be blunt, but i sound very educated when i talk, often surprising people i've only talked to by phone. anyhow. i just wanna get naked for money and have some fun while i'm at it.

I can't speak for the hiring managers, but I don't think being small or young-looking is a bad thing. I also think being eloquent or overly-educated is a bad thing (unless you sound condescending or full of yourself, which, it doesn't sound like you are)....clubs like this because the girls with the trailer park vocabularies just can't get the rich, well-educated men to spend like the more articulate ones can.

One thing though...you did say you were black and that sometimes can hold you back when a club, especially a top club, thinks it has too many black girls.

I don't think it will hurt to keep auditioning (clubs usually do this, where they will have you dance on stage a couple of times) and glamming yourself up to look the part of a stripper. Go in and be happy and breezy.

There are no auditions in Houston. I have never even been asked to take off my clothes. They just asked if I had any tatoos. I said no and I was hired on spot.

How "curvy" are you? Tiny and curve can say chubby to newbie managers who are power tripping. I think race might be a factor, but all of the H-Town clubs I have worked in have been racially diverse, with mostly white and hispanic women.

Although I know that there isn't a cap on most stripclubs in Houston, they have been capping girls at places in Austin like Sugars. They are now realizing that no one is making money, and that hiring less than spectacular newbies is hurting everyone all around....

My advice: have long hair ( I add on), wear very high heels for the interview (but not stripper shoes, try regular stilletos), and wear a bunch of makeup. Professionalism should not be an issue, but be a fun chiq,.....good luck!

by curvy i mean i wear size 0/00 in most clothes, but i'm not flat in the front or back. i weigh maybe 100 pounds. i'm pretty small. as for hair, it's down my back, a couple inches past the shoulders presently. i will definitely take into account your note about the heels.

I have quite a few suggestions for you. Ask the dancers who want you to work at their clubs to accompany you to the club and introduce you to the managers. I have done this for my friends numerous times to get them hired at my clubs. You might also want to try some of the smaller clubs to start at , this will get your feet wet while giving you some dancing experience. Plus you will have some money in your pocket too.Try getting hired at some of the smaller sister clubs then move your way into the bigger clubs. Covergirls,Centerfolds, Treasures and I think Splendors are all owned by the same company.
And if all else fells there is always Foxxy's, Scores and Harlem Nights.

Oh one more thing you can also apply for the dayshift, then work your way to nights after a couple of weeks.. Good luck

Here's some food for thought. I've had many students of different ethnicities mention to me that they have thought that a certain club or manager was possibly racist or biased in their hiring practice. The last dancer that approached me on this was extremely attractive, and so she concluded it was possible racism why she didn't get hired in a certain club because she was African American. The club in question happened to be managed by someone I know really well, so, I asked him point blank about the issue.

He said he gets many gorgeous black women in all the time, it's just he can't hire them right now. He went on to tell me that, like many club managers, they base the population of dancers in the club on what the population of everyday life is. He said that in his club, on an average night he has about 20 dancers (kind of a small/medium sized club) and three of them happnened to be black. That's 15% of the club being of African American ethnicity. In the united States, blacks make up only 13% of the population, so he's technically already over quota. Based on the fact that most of his clientelle are blue-collar and white, having more ethnic women in the club probably woudn't be conducive to the typical customer base he gets on an average night. Hence, he had to turn some people away. Is it racist? I don't think so. I just think he's trying to keep the balance between girls and customers that of what everyday life is like. Think of it this way, if a club had only blonde white women, they probably would have few, if any, African American or Asian customers and that's no good at all. On the flipside, if all they had were African American dancers, they wouldn't have any caucasian customers either, and that is equally poor for business.

I see your point Dancer Wealth.

However Houston doesn't really fall into the specs you used for the popluation break down. Houston does have a very large African American population. And at the clubs I have worked at, there is at times a good many African American dancers. Ranging from 10-30 % depending on the club.
Houston also has 3 prodomently "Black" (for lack of a better word ) clubs. ie. Foxxy's, Harlem Knights and Scores.
I really think when it comes to Houston its just about getting your foot in the door. Not so much about the racial breakdown.
I have taken one of Hispanic friends to get hired, she was turned down. I asked why and the mgr. said she was too big. ( She had a J.Lo body and a face like Selena ) A week later I come to work and see what looks like a herd of cattle in the club. Literally!! One of the managers hired 3 girls that looked like they weighed about 170 and 5'3..I kid you not !! I immediately went to him and complained. My freind started working the next day. And the herd of cattle was put out to pasture. This happened at one of the top clubs in Houston.

I work in Houston when I'm not traveling. What clubs turned you down?

Don't wear your makeup too heavy, but make sure it blends in with your skin. Definately wear heels and instead of dresses wear form fitting jeans and a sexy top.

Wait until next week and then try St. James at 7 T-Th. Also, did you try Ritz?

How about the smaller clubs like Legs, Chics, Gigi's, Mirage, Babes, La Chatte, Memories, Glamour Girls?

Houston is being forced to hire more ethnic women now as 52% of the metro area is non white. Especially since the business is slower now, the clubs are less picky. When business was better the better clubs hardly would hire a black or hispanic dancer. Now that it's slower you see women of color in most of the clubs and large amounts of us too.

One of these places will hire you.

I have yet to see a black club manager here. This is racism. With 800,000 blacks here, there should be at least 6 black managers.

There are Black managers Tina, they just all happen to be at "Black" clubs. I agree with you though, the jobs should reflect the population.

Hi! I am dancing in Houston and have worked in the top clubs. I am most comfortable with the mid range clubs.

If you are just starting out, I would reccommend a mid tier club. If you go to a show club, you are forced to conform before you develop. Not good.

Don't attempt rap. It will drop[ your earnings. Smile and don't get nervous when they look you over. Wear makeup that shows what you look like. No masking.

The ritz IS your best choice!Tina made a good suggestion.

Default i'll start applying your advice post-super bowl.

i'm not sure i'll be able to manage tight jeans, as in general they are too long, but i can do the other things more stringently.

as far as different clubs, i've ranged all across town, but usually only asking once or twice. this time around i'm going to wait until i hear no 5-6 times per shift per club i try. and i'll likely try each club 3 times a week days and nights. it sounds extreme, but i'd rather make a really intense effort and if after trying 40 clubs and wearing decent makeup and sexy clothes they still all say no, then at that point i will consider giving up on stripping as an option.

several of the clubs listed so far have come up on aspd.net. now that doesn't mean they are off-limits, but i am going to try first with clubs that were rarely or very infrequently mentioned on that site before moving on to any others.

incidentally, for any houston-area girls wondering about the less extra-y places to work, the rarely-listed clubs were the colorado, the riviera, men's club, harlem knights, solid platinum, passion, scores, and rick's galleria. which is a pretty diverse range of clubs to begin with. but i'll head out next week and see how it goes and hopefully i'll be getting naked or semi-naked in a week or two.
