Default Who's used the Nicoderm patch?

I think that's what it's called...Nicoderm? Anyhow, I quite smoking again. I cheated over the weekend again. My doctor tried to put me on the patch last week when I told him I quit but I told him I didn't need it. Maybe I do. Does the patch really work? How will that help me overcome my triggers (like in the dresing room getting ready for my set. that's the worst trigger for me)

hey, congrats on quitting smoking! when i quit (for the fifth and final time in early september), i tried the nicoderm patches...gradually reducing the dosage, etc, as directed, but it made it worse for me. the slow withdrawal just made the agony worse...so on my final time i went cold turkey. stayed smoke-free, unlike the other times. however, it's different for each person.

in the dressing room perhaps try a product called "EndIt". It's an inhaler type thing (no nicotine) that allows you to suck on vapors (some are menthol flavored). While it doesn't help with the nicotine withdrawal, it will mimic the hand/mouth action of smoking a cigarette. They can be found at some drug stores. instead of cheating with a cigarette, give that a try. also, nictotine-free cigarettes (found at health food stores....made from catnip and grass or some type of crap) can be used in a pinch. it's not ideal, since you'd still be inhaling smoke, but you won't get readdicted to the nicotine.

good luck to you . there's a great forum for quitting smoking at under "smoking cessation." the people there are VERY supportive.

    hope it all goes well

thanks. I don't think I need the patch because I honestly don't think I'm suffering from nicotine withdrawal. It's all in my mind...It's the hand to mouth motion...the inhaling action...

maybe I should just get a pack of cloves for in a pinch. I smoke one clove and I don't want to smoke at all for a week.

I tried the patch and it didn't work for me. I had my doctor prescribe zyban which worked for me. I smoked over two packs a day when I quit, May will be my two year mark. :yay:
Zyban didn't work with the cravings but more with the mental aspect, the hand to mouth thing. If you just slipped up give the patch another try but if you are really having probelms talk to your doctor about other options. Be careful of the side effects though. I did have a few panaic attacks while on it.

    Good luck!

I've never tried the patch. This would be a first for me. I've also heard that Welbutrin helps curb any craving for cigarettes.

What do you mean when you say Zyban worked not for the cravings but for the mental aspect?

I was going to try to remember what my doctor told be but that was almost two years ago. Check out this link to WebMD and scroll to the description of Zyban, which is almost the exact same thing as Welbutrin.

If you get the Patch, make sure the doasage is apporpriate to your habit and weight. I could only find the heavy smoker patch for my less than 1/2 pack a day habit and it made me quisey and kinda high (bad) from too much nicotine..and it gave me these weird crazy vivid nightmares..its even a known side effect on the box...

I agree...hardest part to quit is the habit!!!

I think everyone is different. I think the patch doesn't work for a lot of people because a lot of people can't fully commit themselves to quitting, in which case, any method would really work. The 2 methods that have worked best for me (obviously never 100%) were quitting cold turkey and using those Quest cigarettes (although no one else seems to think they work).

I used the patch last year (had decided to quit on NYE) and had "quit" for 5 months. The patch had overcome all of my triggers except for the "major stress" one (that led me to smoking again. ) The one good thing about the patch is that it can also serve as a negative reinforcer-for if you smoke while on it,you can get very ill. While the patch took care of most of my cravings, if I ever did get the inkling for one, just knowing I could be sick usually quelled that. Good luck!!!

Doesn't the patch discolor your skin where you place it?

(I smoke like a fiend, so have obviously never used it, but i was under that impression)

Be carefull about what dose you use when using the patch. When I was 14 I got put into rehab for the first time and my parents approved for the hospital to give me the patch (my parents knew that I smoked). So they stick it on me and about thirty minutes later I just had to lay down. All I remember is feeling very ill and not being able to move. Well once the nurses finally came in to check on me they freaked out. I had the patch taken right off and was given a bunch of vitamin shots. Apparently, they had overdosed me and given me a patch that was way too strong. I accidently did the same thing to myself when I was eighteen, except that time I got really sick. I don't understand how it happened, I was smoking two packs of non-filters a day. How could a patch be stronger than that? However, my dad just quit smoking using the patch. Smoked for 25 years and has been smoke free for the last 11 months. So maybe the patches just aren't for everybody. Good luck with your quitting.

Yes it does! but it's only temporary. A lot depends on where it's placed also-some areas are more prone to the "burning" (it turns your skin red). It's one of the reasons they tell you to rotate where you place the patch. I usually alternated upper shoulder blades, I just found that they stayed put better there, plus my hair covered it-but at the end of the day, I had a red square... lol It was usually gone by the next night though.
