doies the adkins or how ever you spell it diet really work and are there any other ones that work like the south beach one?
Suggestion: Rather than trying a diet, which is going to be temporary, try a food lifestyle that promotes good health. The "food lifestyle" has to include exercise, too. If you are reasonably true to the lifestyle, you can still enjoy good food without sacrificing taste and having to struggle to "keep your diet" when socializing.
Changing your lifestyle to one of healthy eating choices won't make you lose weight fast, but it will give you more staying energy and better metabolism that will reduce weight and keep it off.

After advising dieters for years to satisfy their hunger with liberal amounts of steak, eggs and
other saturated fats, the promoters of the Atkins diet now say that people on their plan should
limit the amount of red meat and saturated fat they eat.
Responding to years of criticism from scientists that the Atkins version of a low-carbohydrate, high-
fat regimen might lead to heart disease and other health problems, the director of research and
education for Atkins Nutritionals, Colette Heimowitz, is telling health professionals in seminars
around the country that only 20 percent of a dieter's calories should come from saturated fat.
Atkins Nutritionals was set up by Dr. Robert C. Atkins to sell Atkins products and promote the diet.
An Atkins spokesman said Ms. Heimowitz has been giving these seminars for five years, but that they
do not represent a departure from the original premise of the diet.
Atkins representatives say that Dr. Atkins, who died last year, always maintained that people should
eat other food besides red meat, but had difficulty getting that message out. There has been a
revision in expressing how the diet should be followed, not in the diet itself, they say.
But officials have not made the revision clear to consumers, and Atkins is widely known as the diet
that lets you eat all the meat you want. Dr. Atkins did more than anyone else to popularize the idea
that dieters could eat fat and lose weight. As millions followed his advice, sales of red meat
soared and steakhouses grew in popularity. His book "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution" has sold 15
million copies. Atkins Nutritionals reported $100 million in revenues for 2002.
The change comes as Atkins faces competition from other popular low-carbohydrate diets that call for
less saturated fat. A book on one such plan, the South Beach Diet, came out in April 2003 and has
sold more than five million copies. Atkins representatives made the revision,
Ms. Heimowitz said, because "we want physicians to feel comfortable with this diet, and we want
people who are going to their physicians with this diet to feel comfortable."
The Atkins regimen remains a high-fat diet. But Atkins officials are specifying the amount that
should be saturated ? the kind that comes from meat, cheese and butter ? and the amount that should
be unsaturated ? the kind that comes from most vegetable oils and fish. The revision places more
emphasis on fish and chicken.
Paul D. Wolff, chief executive of Atkins Nutritionals, said the company is trying to get its message
out clearly. "The way the book was promoted was, here's the program that is counterintuitive," he
said. " `You can eat a lot of bacon and steak.=B4 It was the marketing of the book. The
"Perhaps what was communicated in the past was unclear," he said. "We would agree with that."
So why not tell people straight out that you can't eat all the steak and eggs you want, Mr. Wolff
was asked.
"Interesting question," he said as he hung up to catch a plane. The clarification came as a surprise
to Atkins dieters who were interviewed. "A lot of people will be totally shocked," said Ellen Bain,
a graphic designer in Brooklyn. The message she said she had taken away from reading Atkins books
and Web sites was: "The fat in the diet is very good for you; it doesn't make any difference what
kind of fat it is. There are no limits of any kind in the meat department, like steak and eggs for
breakfast, a burger for lunch and beef stir-fry for dinner."
Mt. Bain, who said she has lost 48 pounds on the Atkins diet since July 1, said, "Is it possible
that now they are revising their thinking?" Beef, pork, lamb and butter were on the list of
"foods you may eat liberally" in "The New Diet Revolution," first published in 1992; its update
is No. 1 on the New York Times advice, how-to and miscellaneous paperback best-seller list.
"Atkins for Life," the newest book written by Dr. Atkins and published a few months before his death
last year, says: "You should always eat a balance of different types of natural fat." The precise
proportion of saturated and unsaturated fat was unspecified, Ms. Heimowitz said, because "trying to
tell consumers to do math is futile." Russ Klein, a marketing executive, who has been on Atkins
since Dec. 21, interpreted the phrase "foods you may eat liberally" to mean "eat until you are
full." And, he added, "I think it's probably true you can eat all the red meat you want."
Mu. Heimowitz said people read the phrase "eat liberally" as a license to gorge on red meat. "Not
making a distinction between one kind of protein and another, that was a mistake," Ms.
Heimowitz, "and that is why we had to write another book, to get the story straight." But, she
added, "Even in the old book it says `eat until you are satisfied but not stuffed.=B4 "
Total fat in the revised Atkins diet remains much higher than other diets recommend: 60 percent of
the calories are still derived from fat, twice the level recommended by the Agriculture Department.
Of that, one-third can be saturated fat ? also twice the level recommended by the department. The
rest should be poly- and mono-unsaturated fats. That means that a person who eats 1,500 calories a
day could eat a 17-ounce strip steak every day, according to Mindy Hermann, a registered dietitian.
After the diet's first phase, the amount of fat allowed drops to 55 percent, but the percentage of
saturated fat stays the same. Dr. Atkins said that carbohydrates caused obesity and eating fat
helped regulate levels of insulin, which helps produce body fat. Ms. Heimowitz said, "Saturated fat
isn't as much of an issue when carbohydrates are controlled; it's only dangerous in excess when
carbs are high."
But Dr. Frank M. Sacks, a professor of cardiovascular disease prevention at the Harvard School of
Public Health, scoffed at those scientific claims. "What they are saying is ridiculous," he said.
The revision, he added, " has nothing to do with science; it has to do with public relations and
politics."
The medical establishment largely disputes Dr. Atkins's reasoning and says that high levels of
saturated fats are dangerous. Dr. George L. Blackburn, associate director in the division of
nutrition at Harvard Medical School, said the diet's new version is "definitely healthier," but that
"all of the studies we have on Atkins are based on the Atkins of the 1970's: eat all you can as long
as you keep carbs out."

and yes, atkins will make you lose weight
but for as easy as it is, it's hard to keep the weight off...plus you will have bad breath

you will have bad breath from all that meat rotting in your colon...

EYEZ we had a conversation about weight loss a few days ago and after what you said honestly i ( personally ) think atkins is better than your current weight loss method.
I have noticed that those who haven't tried the atkins or at least read the book are mis-informed about how the diet works... Regardless of what some believe you can NOT eat endless amounts of cream, cheese, meat and fat. There is a lot to this diet and a lot of myths so i advice anyone who wants to try it to READ THE BOOK.
The south beach diet to me is an atkins re-make.... i bought the book last week because i thought this diet allowed fruit however i found out that like the atkins diet, fruit and certain veg's are NOT allowed in the 1st phase..... After phase 1 you can introduce carbs (gradually) back into your diet, eventually even wholemeal bread but this also applies to the atkins!
I wasn't too sure about the atkins at first but after reading the book i was sold... the diet was nothing like i imagined. I eat meat, chicken and fish everyday anyway so i wasn't eating more than usual... also the diet actually encouraged me to eat more veg. The atkins diet is the only diet that has worked for me. I could have customised my own healthy eating plan but i prefer to have a guide so the atkins helped because i knew what i could and could not eat.
Anyway i'm not trying to persuade you but i would rather you done this than starved yourself and then binged or took pills. If you decide to give the atkins a try BUY THE BOOK, seriously because you can't do it without it....
I lost weight BUT i didn't pig out on fatty foods ( btw your craving's will go after a week and you wont be hungry as much either ) i also drank LOTS of water and EXERCISED!
Good luck and if you need anymore info hun just let me know...
Seraya.

Oh and btw i didn't have bad breath (which is not caused by the meat rotting in your colon ryan). The symptoms some ( i didn't have any apart from sugar cravings ) usually subside after the initial phase.

Maybe you should see your doctor, and have him/her advise you on what's best for YOU....
I agree with Seraya about your ideas for weight loss through starvation and pills. That's just going to end up back firing on you. See a doctor, or nutritionist, something. Join a gym...They have people that can help you find something that suits you. You are never going to be able to keep weight off unless you do it in a healthy way.![]()

I am so sorry..
I found something even better though. I used these products when I decided to refine my look a few years ago. The results were great.

Its for the body for life challenge. You can request tje information to be sent to you. I personally never participated in the challenge but , I used the diet plan and excercise plan. Excercise being the key word. I eat whatever I want now because I exercise. Diet pills and all that are cool but, they are not effective for long term use and can actually damage your metabolism over time.

I hate signatures, but I love irony.
Atkins and South Beach are very similar. Yes, they really work. I personally think The Protein Power Lifeplan by Eades & Eades and The Paleo Diet by Cordain are the best books on nutrition I've read, but Atkins or South Beach would be fine as well. The simple rule they all share is:Originally Posted by xxxeyezxxx link=board=5;threadid=6142;start=msg67573#msg67573 date=1075233072
Cut out sugary foods and starchy foods.
There's more to a healthy diet than that, but that's a pretty good place to start.

FERRARI is right EYEZ.... I think you should go and see your doctor who will work out what is best for YOU... Also he can keep track of your progress. I know you do't agree with what i say but i really believe that binging is to do with underlying emotional issues and boredem (sp) not just greediness.... Anyway think about it because i think it will be easier if you have support!
Seraya.
I would say Atkins if you're after a quick fix. I'm not sure I would recommend it as a way of life. Maybe as a start to a good eating plan to kick start the weight loss mentality?? Who knows, i ain't no expert.
A good diet (one I'm getting into now and is YUMMY!) is just a natural diet, eating only things that come from nature e.g. fruit, veg meat and so on. I'm skipping man-made foods such as pasta, bread etc and replacing my carbs from veg inc. potatoes. I feel sooo good just eating that and I know my body won't have any probs processing the material.

Adkins and South Beach are pretty much the same in terms of the "good" carbs, and high protein.
I don't think adkins is a "diet" it's actually a lifestyle change, as is South beach, they start you off with certain foods to help you get that "jump start."
But i a learning about the high Glycemic index foods, mainly sugars in our body from real food sources , and the low much better and slower foods that enter our bodies to keep us fueled for long periods of time, without making us hungry soon after a sugar crash while eating "high" glycemic " index foods.
It's all very easy, and you can eat what you chose, they just break down the good from the bad and better when entering our systems.
My goal is not to lose weight, but eat better for energy all day long without crashing from a sugar high.
I put down the apple juice (which is nothing more than sugar water in our bodies) to eating an apple which breaks down slowly in our bodies for example.
Good reading, is out there. Right now the "Perricone Prescription" book is teaching me the high glycemic foods from the low ones. Excellent reading.
And for those of you who like your meat, it's in there! It's pretty much for everyone!
Pamela.
PS south beach is more complicated. Adkins is easy, but get those "good" carbs!

WOW thank you pamela!!!!
Like i said i think ppl really do have the wrong idea about the atkins and get the initial phase mixed up with the ""whole" diet.... the initial phase is strict because its like a detox ( gaining good blood chemistry ).... of course this diet is not for every body but that applies to most things and you don't have to eat red mead everyday..... there are plenty of great recipes out there for fish dishes and poultry. You can introduce ALL good carbs including wholemeal food back into your diet gradually.
Like you pamela i used to down apple juice because i thought it was healthy... when i checked out the glycemic index i was quite suprised.
Anyway like i said not trying to persuade anyone just want to get share my experience to show that its not about gorging on red meat and fat.
Seraya.

I've always been rather anti-Atkins and low carb diets. Your body needs carbs to make seretonin.
But, in the last month three freinds and my mother have started the Atkins diet and they love it and they're losing weight. I don't have time to excercise any more than I already do, and I'm due to lose some weight, so I decided to try it. I'm excercising for ten minutes a couple times a day to keep my seretonin up there.
At this point I've been eating eggs and meat and salads and grilled veggies and drinking cream from the carton like a pig for four days - all my favorite foods really (except eggs, I've always hated eggs) - for three days, and I've lost seven pounds. The first couple days I had a headache and my freind said it was because I wasn't getting enough fat - I started drinking a couple teaspoon fulls of cream a couple times a day and the headache went away and I feel great.
Now, it's not healthy to lose weight this fast. If I keep losing weight at this rate I'll lose fifteen pounds a week or thirty pounds during the initial two week thing. I don't even *want* to lose thirty pounds, and I definitely don't think it's healthy to lose it in two weeks! And I can't help thinking that thirty pounds that goes away in a couple weeks will come back in a couple weeks too...
But that's my Atkins story, so far.
Lena
Lena thats why i like the Perricone Prescription. You don't have to quit anything! Just learn how different foods react in our bodies. The infamous "sugar rushes" etc.
He breaks down the food groups for us. Good carb from bad. We have to have carbs...Bottom line.
If some wish he has a cleansing diet for 3 days that remove puffiness, and lose a few lbs. But don't stay on it.
This book is more education about our foods, and the carbs mainly. I kinda use it for healthy meals. BUT, i incorporate my own foods with his, which i follow the chart on "low glycemic carbs.'
I have been doing this for 2 weeks, my energy is MAD high, i sleep well, but still take my multi.
Pamela
has any one tryed that one a day weight smart i think its called i baught the gen kind hass all the same stuff all myacdek vit and all the other ones the zinc an dioron blah blah and it has EGCG which i guess is sap to help with matablisim
I have found that the only diet that works for me is Weight Watchers. It is portion control and balanced diet that is really about changes in lifestyle.
Yes, it does cost (but only about half of a NYC lapdance per week!) but the support is great. You can't deprive yourself of the foods you love for long periods of time. You are bound to be tempted and fall "off the wagon" and gain all your excess weight back.
Also, WW allows you to see that you are not alone in the weight struggle.
An alcoholic can avoid bars, or order non-alcoholic drinks, but everyone has to eat and go to restaurants some times.
Besides, me LIKE cookies! (almost as much as strippers!)
"Those who dance, are considered crazy by those who can't hear the music."--George Carlin
yes cookies are good but im ust give them up.. i went to the doc today and to my surprised he said go with the south beach diet and slimfast humm i think it will work just i need to get over the issue of thinking im hungry when im not. i cant wait to start ( when im getti ng over being sick) only 120 pounds to go ( i know alot) but if i want somthing enough i need to buckel down and do it i mean was better being fat or being skinny and making 1000$ a night?( and i know that dosent happen alot but the club i plan on working at here its pritty easy to make that or around there. umm i cant wait!!!!![]()

Good luckxxxeyezxxx,
It may seem like a lot to lose but, its certainly do able.
Just remember to excercise, you will see results a lot quicker and its good for you too.
Take care,
