    Default Bursitis????

Has anyone ever been diagnosed with Bursitis? I was recently diagnosed with bursitis in my shoulder and missed about two weeks of work due to it My guess is that it was due to pole work. I was hoping to try to gain some personal insight (such that research can't provide) as well as get an idea about how often/how bad this is going to affect me. Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

I didn't know what you were talking about, so I looked it up and this is what I found. Hope it helps!

Tia , I'm sorry to give you bad news but it definitely means no more pole work. The bursa is a little sack that contains fluid to cushion a joint. When it breaks that leaves bone on bone friction. A police officer had his burst in his finger from a dog bite and it ended his career. When the finger is even jarred it hurts as though the finger was getting broke. Revise your routine to different moves.

Thank you all for your replies This definitely sucks It hurts incredibly when inflammed. I was given Vioxx (later changed to Bextra) and had a Cortizone shot in the shoulder (that was additional pain). I'm supposed to start physical therapy...

I'm not sure about preventing it. Apparently it's due to repetitive movements (like a painter). I've definitely stopped doing any pole work (which let me tell you...leaves me kinda wandering the stage not knowing what to do with myself!)

I went back to work last week and I'm definitely coddling it but I was curious how often I'm looking at getting a flare up.

Thanks for the support (and allowing me to vent)

    Tia:

My second job is a claims administrator for disability claims on health insurance. Bursitus is awful and I'm so sorry that you have it... but the former post is correct about the fluid sack breaking. Once it breaks, there is no more cushion for your joint which means bone on bone. I also have it but mine is in my knee and it hurts horribly! PT will help you and you will have to revise your routines (no more pole work! ) If you want more info on it, email me directly, my email addy is in my profile, in the meantime, I hope you get better soon and keep your chin up!

Does anyone know if gluclosamine will help ?
I know it was suggested to me for arthritis pain and swelling in my knee . I wonder if it would work for your condition ?

    Tia,
I am in the health field, what I can tell you is this is a tough thing to get over. Along with the bursa, you also have synovial fluid surrounding the joint, which can get infected in this situation, depending on how long this has been going on before you had it checked (don't get scared) when you start your physical therapy, they will more then likely use an ultrasound on it which will warm the tissue and improve the blood flow. Exercises will be added later as well as ice packs. Stick with it, it can take six months to a year for it to feel "normal".

Cortizone shots are a common treatment, however, this can also lead to tendon rupture. Go easy on the injections.
As far as Gluclosamine, it may work as well as any anti-inflammatory/pain med, but, it is made from shellfish so if your allergic, stay away from it.

Surgey is always an option to relieve the pressure but this has "risks" and is quite painful.

I wish I had good news about your situation. Keep your chin up, the therapy should do the job.

    All My Best

Thank you all again for your help and support. Guess I'd better start putting those therabands to use and think of some new danceee moves *sigh*. It really wouldn't be so bad if it didn't hurt ALL the time... I don't even have to move it for it to hurt. But I'm going to stop whining and thank you all once again

I had it in my left hip when I was a teenager and ultrasound cleared it up.
It started again about 5 years ago in the same place and I've had it since.Nothing has managed to sort it out unfortunately. Some days its ok and others I nearly fall over from it.Whatever you do,try and get it sorted sooner rather than later,as I think I'm stuck with mine for good now

    Tia_q,

What symptoms were you having when you went to the doc (was it pain all the time, random pain, pain from doing certain movements, etc)? How did the doctor determine it was bursitis?

I'm asking because ever since I quit dancing and went through PT for my knees, I've gotten very random pain in my hips. I've lost a HUGE amount of mobility because of it. If I sit down and try to spread my legs in a V shape they only make a 45 degree angle at best. If I try to move them any farther, they seize up. Also running, walking, or any other activity can randomly make it flame up. Actually, more than anything, I wake up in pain and can't move my leg at all because the hip pain is so bad.

Before I quit dancing, I was studying ballet with a teacher from NYC who was using experimental "floor-barre techniques", which come to think of it, is actually a lot like pilates only much harder on the hips. A lot of the other girls complained of hip pain after that, but mine has never gone away. Just wondering what the cause may be....this "bursitis" is one thing that I haven't heard anything about before....

Hi SCgirl I went into the Dr.'s after about a week of excruciating pain. I had been sleeping and woke up in pain. (serious pain-I would rate it an 8 out of 10-never having kids) Although I had never had pain like that before-I had assumed I just slept on it wrong. (sore neck type thing) But about half way through the day-when I couldn't take the pain any longer, I called the Dr. who unfortunately was out until Monday (this was on a Thurs). Thinking it would be stupid to go to the emergency room for shoulder pain, I waited to get an appt. w/ the Dr. (in the meantime taking anything I could get my hands on for pain-Darvocet/Percocet/Motrin..)

My shoulder hurt regardless. I didn't have to move it for it to hurt. In fact it seemed to hurt more if I didn't move it (it would like freeze up)

Dr. gave me a physical exam and then referred me to an orthopedic Dr.

My bursa hasn't burst, what has happened is that it became so infammed that it was taking up almost my entire shoulder "pocket" per say (which is why when they shot cortizone into it-it hurt like he!!)

The Dr. explained it to me like this (cuz I was dumbfounded that I could hurt like this after sleeping): apparently repeatedly using my shoulder (such as with pole work) led to arthritic spurs developing on my shoulder. When I slept on it wrong and put that pressure on it, the bursa was forced into these spurs and thus became infammed. The more I moved it, the more inflammed it got and thus the nasty cycle.

If your hip is bothering you, even randomly, I would definitely have it checked out. Especially if it's already limiting your mobility

Whew, sorry this was so long-winded. Good luck with your hip-definitely get to the Dr.-something (hopefully not bursitis or worse but something) is wrong.

    Good luck!
