Default a lump in my breast...

I have had a sore lump in my breast for about a month, I thought maybe I had just banged it on the poles while dancing or something, but after a month I thought I had better go to the doctor since it was growing too.
The doctor is a bit worried about it since it is hard and getting bigger, so I have to go for a biopsy. Im really scared, breast cancer is in my familys history and Im only 23. Has anyone had a biopsy before? The doctor wasn't too clear on what it is. And has anything like this ever happened to anyone?

    Thanks

I'm really sorry, Miss Courtney. But your doctor MUST have told you that there is a good chance it is just a benign cyst. We all feel for you. Know that you have a furry blue shoulder to lean on here.

    Oh No !!
I am going through the same thing right now.
And I have implants which makes it worse.
I am currently battling cervical cancer.
I have a lump im my breast too. I had a mammogram
and I am getting ready for a biopsy soon. I am very terrified of the news. . I had a biopsy when I was 16 and it was a benign cyst.
No one in my family has cancer.

i'm sorry to hear that ...i hope everything is ok with you ...hopefully t just a cyst and not cancer ...well the best thing to do now is to fallow your doctors advise ..if it happens to be cancer (i really and truelly hope its not) it would be better this way that you know it before it had gotten worse so you can take care of it ...wish you luck girl and i'll pray thay everything will be ok

I've had a lump removed and it was just a cyst, which is probably what you have. I know how scary it is, though, and I wish you all of the best. Take good care of yourself.

A biopsy is just them going in and having a look-see at the trouble maker. They'll remove it and send it to a lab to make sure that it's benign...usually at this time, they will check the rest of the breast and see if there has been any matasticizing (sp?). If it's benign, then chances are that you'll be done and can go on with your life. Although, they'll probably make you go in for mammograms once a year for a while. If it's malignant, then they'll call you back in and go over your options and give you the information about each of them.

If you feel that your doctor has not explained the procedure well enough for you, then you NEED to call and have them CLEARLY explain what is going to happen. I know that what you are going through is scary enough, but, I think you will be less afraid when you know exactly what is going to happen. Don't freak yourself out with not knowing!! Call and get it clarified!

Good luck and please keep us updated!

    Lots of hugs,
    Venus

Oh gosh I hope I get to you in time before they cut you or whatever they may do for a biopsy!

    IT MAY BE FROM CAFFEINE!

I know sounds whacked but over consumption can lead to lumps in the breast - I TOO HAD A LUMP!

THE doctor was worried and scheduled me for a biopsy too!

I cried and called my mom as a last resort I really didnt want to - believe me - we HAVE cancer in the family lots of it too.

We agonoized for some time then my mom calls me back cuz she's been lamenting to everyone on her end and one of our dear family friends say WAIT! Ask her about her coffee intake whats the deal!

See she had a lump too but fortunately had a wicked ass doctor who was familiar with the caffeine connection and breast lumps -

long story short I STOPPED all coffee (oh my god worse than heroin addiction I swear lol - headaches bitchy whoa!!)

I didnt go back to that doctor either (part fear part anger part refusing to believe the possibility) but within a month or so the lump WAS GONE!

It was a couple cups in the morning and several throughtout the day and just regular coffee in the a.m. but espresso's in the afternoon/eve.

ANYWAY I just wanted to alert you to another avenue -

and btw I only have a cup & half of coffee a day now in the morning.

    NO LUMPS ever again.

Leigh, I had the same thing: lumps in my breasts from caffeine! I quit coffee and they reduced dramatically (some completely gone)! I figured out the coffee connect *after* my screenings. I could have saved myself some bother.

I went through a breast ultrasound (which I was told by my doc was more thorough for young fibrous breasts than a traditional mammogram so you may want to ask your Dr. about that) and a couple of mammograms later to be sure. Courtney, if they need to biopsy you, see if they can do a needle biopsy. It will leave a little dent for a little while but I much less traumatic than some other methods of biopsy. I had a friend who's nude modeling career was cut short by a jagged cut and dent on her breast for what turned out to be a benign lump. Sometimes I've found that if you don't have good insurance, you will only be advised of the cheapest options. Please ask a lot of questions and let them know that you have aesthetic career concerns regarding your breasts. The fact that I was a dancer changed my Dr.s screening approach!

Even if something is wrong, early treatment makes all the difference!

    Topaz,
I am a vegetarian and I drink a lot of soy milk and eat tons of soy products. I am curious as to why you choose to cut down on soy and what affect it had on you.

caffeine does cause lumps and so does DAIRY. In HS I was on a huge dairy binge...I LOVE milk!!...I ended up getting hard painful lumps in my breasts AND in my "nether region" including the inside of my upper thighs. It took me a few different doctors and some research to find out that it was the calcium in the milk that was causing it. I got off the milk for a week and they all went away--never had a problem since.

I really do hope everything goes well for you. If you have ANY doubts, please so see a different doctor just so you can be sure. All of our thoughts are with you.

    Take care honey,

I'll cross my fingers for you.

I had a cervical scare about a year ago and had to have a small section removed. Was pretty scary but the staff at the hospital were really wonderful, especially the nurse who held my hand when i started crying...

Let us know how you go.

Wow Miss Courtney. I'll definitely keep you in my thoughts. My former "Monster-In-Law" had lumps removed constantly, all benign. She's a big milk drinker, so her doctor said that it was a contributing factor. I'd say she goes about twice a year to have them removed. Please keep us updated on this. Make sure you schedule an appointment right away. Hopefully, it's nothing to worry about, and if unfortunately it's something more serious, it'll most likely be caught in time to cause any problems. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya girl.

too much soy feeds tumors...i try to stay within the 25 grams a day limit...

when i switched my soy protien suppliment with a plain whey protein suppliment (for my protein shakes at night) the pain (and lump) that was under my right arm went away....as did the pain in my right breast....

(i cut way down on the dairy products too...and eat no eggs unless they're in baked goods...but i'm not a big dessert eater either)

so if i were you i'd cut way down on the soy products....do some research to find other plant based proteins....vegetarian times dot com is a good place to start...

also...when it comes down to getting healthy....tons of veggies (preferably raw) and a lot of water is the way to go....'cause tons of protein...regardless of the source (but more so for animal protein) is NOT a good thing...

My mum had god knows how many cysts in her breasts drained over the years. Most breast lumps are completely harmless,so try not to worry yourself sick before you know something. My wife had cancer (not breast) in 2002 and looking back,we both agree that worrying about what you don't know is worse than actually knowing what's what and being able to make a plan.

i think what leigh was trying to explain is cystitus (sp) it is common, i have it and yes caffiene does aggravate it. however, if a lump is that big i would not hesitate to get a biospy. you cant count on it just being caffiene. good luck

Worst case scenario: breast cancer. Plan for the worst and then you are free to hope for the best. Breast cancer is emminently treatable, if caught early. The earlier, the better. Some of the treatments are quite radical (emotionally and physically) but at least you will be alive to complain about them. Schedule a biopsy immediately.

Veronika has a good point in re: insurance companies. The usual biopsy is a mere matter of taking a small sample of the lump and sending it off to the lab for testing. Some doctors want to figure a scalpel into this procedure. Encourage them to go other routes, and be helpful by offering to pay for the more expensive options.

The vast majority of breast lumps are benign, so take heart. An acquaintance of mine once worried herself sick and delayed a biopsy, only to discover that her lump was an infected oil gland in the skin.

Thanks for all your support everyone, Im really scared as I have found another lump in the same breast near the top near my armpit. I rang the doctor and he said he will make my refferal urgent. Im trying not to get too worried as it wont help things at all, just thinking everyday "I wont worry about it today" but I cant help but feel scared.
Lilith you said 'If caught early' is a month too late? I left it for a month before I went to the doctor about it, and now I have another one

Courtney...don't fret. Worrying will only make things worse. It doesn't matter how long...it just matters that you are doing something about it. Find other, positive activities to do while you are approaching your "day". It'll help alleviate the anxieties and you'll feel a little better.

Good luck hun. I had a lump in my boobie and my doc said it can be a cyst. Notice that if the lump goes away after your period but come back before your period it may be that. Just last night I was so scared because I felt it again. And I dont have insurance right now... so Im screwed anyway.
Good luck, and ill definetely say a prayer

    Miss Courtney,
You will find that fretting over "woulda-coulda-shoulda" will do you no good. You have delayed, but this can be rectified by immediately getting your biopsy, preferably making the appointment first thing tomorrow morning. Then put all worries from your mind until after your results come in, as fretting in advance is about as useless as ignoring it in the hopes that the lump will "go away".

Take heart, because even with another lump there are still many non-cancerous possibilities for the lumps. Keep that firmly in mind while you wait for your results. Cysts are very common, as are infections in women who have breast-fed or are pregnant. Mastitis (infected milk ducts) share many qualities with breast cancer; reddened, tender and localized to a "lump" (infected duct).

I have more to say, but if you are easily frightened then i do not recommend reading further.

I mean it. Don't read further if you think you will be upset, since I don't plan on censoring myself.

What follows may piss people off or be offensive, because they may think I am trying to scare Miss Courtney. In all honestly, that's the total truth. If scaring the daylights out of her convinces her to make an appointment for a biopsy and delay no longer, then that's what I'll do. I mean well, Courtney, because frightening you could mean the difference between losing your breast or worse, your life. I would far rather you be scared, mad at me and getting immediate treatment than making what could be a fatal delay.
Many forms of cancer are totally responsive to treatment (I refrain from the term "cured" because cancer patients are never cured, merely put into remission). However, the younger you are at the onset of cancer, the more likely you are to die from it. I repeat, remission is far more likely for patients over the age of 40 than for those under 25. With that in mind, all cancers are more responsive to treatment in the early phases. Furthermore, you are less likely to slip out of remission if your cancer was caught in the early phases. It is of the utmost importance, and I cannot possibly stress this enough, for you to identify cancer as early as possible and treat it immediately. One month earlier detection absolutely can make the difference in a fifteen year life expectancy and a six week life expectancy. My own mother died six weeks after diagnosis. For a less drastic example, one month's delay in treatment can make the difference between chemo or losing your breast. I identified quite early and still underwent a partial mastectomy. I had Stage 2A cancer (defined as malignant tumor between 2-5 cm without metastasization to the lymph nodes or chest wall... my tumor was larger than 5cm, but without the metastasizing which would have placed me in Stage 3A) which required a modified radical mastectomy, radiation and hormones/steriod therapy. My oncologist tells me in all seriousness that early detection saved my life. Five-year life expectancy rates for Stage 2A cancers are 88%, Stage 3A is 56% (based on tumor size, I am 3A, based on mestastasizing, I am 2A). Seven year life expectancy rates are, respectively, 71% and 39%. I just celebrated my fourth birthday before I started dancing. Had I delayed long enough for the cancer to spread, I would likely have lost my chance to ever see 30 years old.

Why is early detection so important in breast cancer? Simple explanation: some tumors specifically feed off of estrogen. A normal hormone spike (ovulation, menstruation) can cause a tumor to grow at a fantastic rate, putting you in a higher stage of cancer and thus significantly reducing your survival rate AND making more radical treatments necessary. If that isn't scary enough, then look at a few pictures of women post-mastectomy/lumpectomy. Hell, I'll just describe what my breast looks like. Imagine a normal B-cup on the slightly smaller side. Then imagine what that breast would look like totally empty of anything except some milk ducts: sagging empty skin, folded in on itself, with a nipple resting just above the chest wall. If this image scares you, if you don't want that, if you want to live then make certain you are detected early. My breasts are now freakish but at least I am alive to complain about it. Anyways, a boob job can always fix my breast; nothing can bring me back to life.

    A few facts:
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for all women.
This year, in the United States, breast cancer will be newly diagnosed every three minutes and a woman will die from breast cancer every thirteen minutes.
Mamograms often detect cancer before lumps can be felt by hand.
