Default Depressed need solutions to help me!

Hello everyone! It is so good to be back on here i have been away for about month and have missed everyone on here. Since the last time i posted i have moved into a new house and i have been so depressed i should be happy but i am not and i need advise on some stuff to do to make it go away because i do not want to take meds to help it. It is so bad i do not even want to go back to work dancing and i need to for money but i can not do it no matter what i do. So if you wonderful people could give me some ideas to try i would be grateful, it just seems like everytime i turn around something bad is happening to me and nothing good is happening and now the only thing i want to do is lay in bed and stay there it is messing up my life so maybe someone has some natural or alternitive remedies then going on anti depressants. Thank you for reading my post and helping out.

don't know how much help i could be...since i'm having similar things (all bad stuff) going on in my life...but i take st john's wort at night...doesn't exactly help 'make the blues go away'...but it helps me get a better night's sleep...

i choose not to take anti depressants too...i've taken them in the past...all they did was make me sick and unable to function...so i stopped taking them...

Do you excercise? This might sound lame but excercising in the morning works great. It gets your blood pumping, gets those seratonin (?) levels up, and all in all gets you energized. I swear when I excercise first thing in the morning I am juiced up for the rest of the day. Even if I only do the warm up portion, not even the whole tape.

st john's wort is considered a milder...natural version of traditional anti-depressants...without the side effects...it makes me drosy...which helps me sleep at night...

also...part of the reason for your insomnia could be the late night exercise...depending on what you are doing...i weight train...and walk on the treadmill some nights...so i'm not all wound up and raring to go when i get back to the apartment...arobics could have a different effect...

Sorry, this is going to be long, but I'm going to give you everything I've got.

I've had depression on and off forever, but I have never taken meds. When I was younger I didn't know how to handle it, but I'm a warrior now.

This is my personal prescription. Your milage may vary. In my case it always gets better when I make certain mental and physical changes.

    1. stop trying to please everyone else, and figure out how to please myself. (This is the BIGGEST issue for me, interestingly. Trying to fit in a pre-fab mold, be what I'm not.)

    2. if bad stuff is happening to me, I stop feeling bad about it and get angry instead. I mean, if someone dies, you go through your mourning stages.

But if your boyfriend (or other family member) is being a prick, you need to get mad about it. Actively resist internalizing pain or blaming yourself for bad behavior of others. Anger can be very energizing if you can channel it into action and postive change, while depression can suck your energy away.

If it is old, childhood pain coming back, find a way to wrestle with it, work through it. Journal, art, therapy, whatever it takes. You'll grow that way, and personal growth combats depression.

This is about getting out of the victim mentality and into the mentality of an ass-kicking warrior. Define some goals and do what it takes to get there. Learn to walk thru fire, and feel your own strength.

    3. If you are doing any negative validation (I hate my self, my body, my life), do all it takes to stop. This is very dangerous will pull you into a negative spiral faster than you realize.

Then there are the physical things.

Exercise is most effective early in the day. Not being able to roll yourself out of bed is a definite issue. If you could just get your butt over to the coffeemaker (or whatever) then go on a walk... like a fresh air walk... every day! -- that could make a huge difference. If you *must* exercise at night, I'd at least try and take a jacuzzi or good long sauna afterward. And then drink some herbal tea, like chamomille, sleepytime, nighty night tea. Treat yourself good that way before you go to bed.

St. Johns Wort: I hear tincture is most effective. Personally, I believe it *does* work for me, but you need to take the tincture as directed for at least 3 weeks to get the benefit. For me, it's not that I notice a huge difference, I just notice after a few weeks I am not in that deep pit any more. That's often all it takes to start making the changes you need to make to get back to feeling strong and vital again.

Don't mix st. john's wort with clinical meds, and be careful as it can make you more sensitive to sun. But you should definitely get some natural sunlight. Just 10 minutes gets you the vitamin D you need. Some people become depressed for lack of sunlight.

If you drink milk, a glass before bed can help because of the triptophan and calcium in it. (& take your calcium tablets after evening meal.) Also, carbs help you sleep soundly. My insominia recipie is a glass of milk and a little pasta with olive oil and fresh grated parmesian. Mmm. It makes me sleep like a rock.

Avoid alcohol right before bed (and in general), and don't watch TV at night IMO. Rather, find a good book to read. Write in a journal. Give yourself some attention. Be good to yourelf. Fung shui your home. Just keep taking good care of your self. It takes work to get out of a depression, but you'll come out a better and stronger person.

    Good luck.

I've tried some natural remedies, such as St John''s Wort. It had little effect on my depression and seemed to induce panic attacks, so I went off it. Taking nothing was preferable to SJW for me, but prozac is better still. Is there a reason you're disinclined to take prescription meds?

yes i have taken them before in the past and do not like the side effects from them. Plus i do not like to depend on medication to make me happy all it seems to do for me is mask the real depression.

    Mia,
I would say a day at the spa is in order. If you can't afford it right now. Then go to the store get 2 gallons of whole milk and some honey. Also pick up some nonfat plain yogurt.Go home and fill the tub with the milk, some honey and hot/warm water, soak for 30-60 minutes. When you get out of the tub, apply the yogurt over your face for 10-15 minutes. Moisturize your whole body. You should feel a lot better. Try drink chamomile or decaf green teas to relax your nerves. Warm milk is still the best sleeping aid.
I had a lot of depression when I moved back to Cali from Houston. Relocating can always be depressing. I didn't want to take any meds either. So I started reading different books to find natural pick me ups.
    These worked for me...

There are some new anti-depressants on the market this year that limit the side effects. Be sure to check with an experienced "psychopharmacologist" who specializes in them.

I have had depression on and off for most of my adult life, and I thank God for the meds. In the "old" days the side effects were really awful.

I had to overcome a great resistance to them, but now I think this:

Medication is simply a crutch to get you through the bad times. If you broke your leg, would you lie down and not move, or accept a pair of crutches to be able to walk. It is not ideal. It is not permanent. But it helps you to heal temporarily.

Also see a regular therapist to find out what the root causes of your depression are.

I know its a bummer, but hang in there dear.

I did not have time to read everything but my wife was on birth control pills (don't remember what kind) and she was like that. She quit taking them and now shes much happer and she does not stay in bed all day or cry all day. Maybe this could be your problem? When she gets home I will ask her what kind it was maybe your taking the same ones?

Hello, Mia. Nice to meet you. Let me introduce myself. I'm a 40-year-old guy that possesses a BA in psychology and was raised by a psychologist. I've helped a lot of people over the years deal with problems. All kinds of problems.

Let me also say that I take your problem very seriously and I'm not just quickly whipping off some advice. I've called up a family friend who is a psychotherapist that I respect and she has read over your thread. I can only hope you'll follow the advice I'm about to give you.

You have a major problem and you need professional help. I cannot advise via a forum. I have a feeling what the problem is, but it is best that I don't tell you that for my analysis may be off and I don't want to add to your concerns. You need to call a clinic, set up an appointment, and go to it. Just be sure to ask for an assertive psychotherapist or, if you have no choice in psychotherapists, ask the one you get to take an assertive strategy with you. You do not need a passive ("couch talk") therapist at this moment.

I do not want to freak you out, but you need to get professional help. The sooner, the better. Please do not try to treat yourself. I am NOT normally an advocate of psychotherapists. If you doubt that, read the "HYPNOTHERAPY" thread. But in your case, I do see a need. Please seek out professional help.

    Take care.

A couple things about st. john's wort:
    1. you need 900 to 1200 mg a day for it to work (and it takes weeks, sometimes months, to be effective)
    2. it can render birth control ineffective

That said, my mom is was clinically depressed and on prozac (she couldn't function without it). She started taking st. johns wort, and it worked really well for her! She's off prozac and been taking the st. johns wort for years now.
Maybe it could help you? Anyway, I hope you start feeling better!

To my understanding, yes, St. JW screws up the pill and that includes Orthotricycline.

The thing that has worked the most for me, and I mean better then any med's, is sunlight. Try grabbing a magazine, and get a comfortable chair, and go sit out for half an hour. Med's make me feel like a zombi, sunlight lifts my whole mood. Try it and see.

Well Mia216, to keep from sounding like a doctor, if we knew kinda why you are depressed, then we could add to your helping in a way that would be personal instead of just general. Like if it's a man problem, of if it's a med problem, or lack of sex, or even just cause your lonely. Do you have kids? This is what usually helps me out. I look at photos of my little girl and think what would happen to her if daddy wasn't here for her? There are all sorts of reasons for being depresed, take my life for example, 26 months and 25 days since sex has done anything for me. Am i depressed, no! Cause I know it will happen when it is time and there is no reason to rush into anything. Believe me when I tell you this as well, meds are not the answer to anything! I know I have been there as well. Find you a really GREAT FRIEND that you know you can trust, sit down with them and tell them what it is that is bothering you. Hell, if it's the friend write back to me. You can either reach me here or at another e-mail addy. [email protected] I am also yourmemorykeepers in yahoo messages as well. I wish you the best of luck dear, and if you need anything else just write!

    Hi Mia,

all i can think of to say (you know i am for medication when needed) is when you are so depressed you can't get out of bed, you have pretty much hit a very low point. You may or not know why your are feeling this way. Sometimes our brains will malfunction some, our brain chemicals get all messed up. Millions of people go through this.

But hun, depression is a killer. And i would love for you to seek therapy, along with a low dose of the newer antidepressants.

They do wonders for millions of people just like us!

    Good luck,

    Pamela

I too have bouts of depression and one thing that has worked really well for me has been talking b-12 vitamins. I get the name brand with the most milligrams. I usually take two a day when I'm feeling bad and within a week or so, I'm feeling better. Also, maybe you should visit a strip club or two with some firends and have an assload of fun to get you back in the stripping mood. It has helped me when I didin't feel like going to work. Money troubles can be very very very depressing but maybe if you write out a financial plan with set goals then you can actually see how you can get away from your money woes. Hope this helps.

hello ok i have read all of them and i will go into alittle bit more detail. yes i belive sunlight would help as i normally get like this in winter but i live in the ozark mountains and right now it is to cold to be sitiing outside and not alot of sunlight. Second i do not have any friends down here yet i just moved here 5 months ago away from all my family i do have one child and he is my life. My husband and i moved from are home town where we were making 4 grand a month with just my husband working, thought the money would be just as good down here but we live in a tourist spot and no one told us that money would suck in the off season we are stuggling to bring in $800 a month so there has been a huge differance in money. Plus it does not help everytime i talk to my family back home they beg me to move back home. Then the last major thing if anyone has read my previous posts my husbands family has been threating to take my son away so that they can have rights to him and they do not even like him go figure the just hate me so much they are willing to do anything to make my life miserable. so hopefully this helps some of you out to figure out why i am in depression it just seems like there is never going to be a bright side of life. so thanks for listening
