Default Single Female HomeOwners and/or Landlords

I just bought a house about 8 months ago and was wondering if any of you ladies recently did the same. I watch alot of HGTV(Home & Garden TV) and do alot of projects myself.

I was hoping we could share some projects that we have done on our own or maybe some advice about home maintenace, low cost landscaping, painting or anything you've done yourself, saved money and didn't have to call a contractor.

For instance I saw on HGTV a show that suggest instead of using expense landscaping fabric why not use garbage bags to smother weeds and keep them from growing. Also, I learned how to change out a chandelier in my living room. An electrician in my area would have costed $50/hour.

Also any landladies out there? I need to rent my downstairs apt out and was wanting any pointers that you could give.

I was thinking about starting a group of females in my community that could get together and talk about these things. Not all of us have males around that we could call up to help out or want to spend the money for contractors in hope of them not taking advantage. You know like the mechanic that loves to see a female bring her car in. I would be great if we could learn from each others mistakes as well as accomplishments.

I own my house and I try to do stuff around the house, and it never looks right. The one thing I'm proud of is installing Pergo in the kitchen and it looks perfect. But when I tried to paint the bathroom, I did it all wrong. I used a flat instead of semi-gloss and every drop of water leaves a stain. I have many projects that turn out like that.

Now I want to install a fence around my yard. I have 2 small dogs. Anyway, a fence shouldn't be that hard, but the idea of doing it myself is kind of scary, so I think I'm going to hire a contractor. I'm afraid it'll look like crap or it'll take me days and days to do...time I could be spending working, so I can pay someone to do it right.

You can learn lots of things at your local home depot as well, they teach you how to do just about anything. Also, you dont have to hire expensive contractors to do everything, there are handymen that advertise in your local paper who can do just about anything, some are retired electricians ect,for about 10 dollars an hour.I hired one to put up blinds for me,it took around 3 hours,if I had hired someone from a widow covering store they would have charged me three or four times that,he also installed a ceiling fan too.My problem is I need to hire a decorator or find someone who is good with furniture placement ect because no matter how I set things up I never like it.

I own my apt. and am in the middle of big renovations (almost done!). My best advice is if installing laminate flooring in more than just one room (ie continuing from a room into closets and hallways without transition strips) GET A CONTRACTER! With the time i've spent on this I could have hired a contracter and made a buttload of money to boot!

I agree, Trading Spaces is an awesome show LOL
I love them...obviously the best part is the unveiling of the new rooms, and the people's reactions. I hate to admit, but I love when they sometimes hate the rooms, cause it crackssss me up!
