Default Any of you dealing with High Blood Pressure?

Welp.........had my physical with my doctor and he put me on High Blood Pressure meds. I know it's not something that I should be depressed about, but knowing that it's something that I now have to take for the rest of my life.....well......kinda sucks.

Just wondering if anyone else is on these meds?

Ya know......I thought that working on my weight would be the key to all of my problems. (Lost 30 pounds in 5 months, down to my pre college weight). I never in my wildest dreams thought that it would be due to genetics!!!

Sorry for the incessant rambling...........just need to get this off of my chest.

Well, the only thing that I know for sure about high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is that sodium (salt) is a MAJOR contributing factor. If your doctor hasn't already discussed ways to eliminate as much sodium from your diet as possible, I would definitely suggest talking to a licensed dietician/nutritionist. There is more sodium in everyday foods than you can imagine! Anything that is prepackaged, from spaghetti sauce, to cookies, to frozen dinners, contains an absolute TON of sodium. In my nutrition class, we all had our diets analyzed and although I do not suffer from hypertension, I do have an amazingly high sodium intake (which also causes water retention, lethargy, etc). It's extremely hard to cut down your sodium intake to a decent level, so I definitely advise you to talk to an honest to god dietician, NOT just a doctor (because they aren't trained--they know just a little more than we do). They can help you with grocery lists, low-sodium foods/recipies, etc.

I do not have high blood presure. But my dad does. Oddly I have low blood pressure, not too low-yet, but the low side of avrage. I think thats because my dad changed his eating habits to lower it. when he did, so did I. we are both vegitarian now, he also drinks red wine now. Its not just weight its lifestyle. Food is medicine. Sorry if this sounds like a pitch, but especilly for high blood preasure issues, being vegitarin is a very good thing. (thats not the only reason i am, just one) I am not sure if my dad takes the medication anymore.

heres a website specificly for a study on high blood presure in omnivores vs (ovo-lacto) vegitarians.
    http://www.bhj.org/books/diets/chap11.htm

heres some good quotes from the article:

The prevalence of mild hypertension ( ' 140 mmHg systolic and/or 90 mmHg diastolic) was 10% in omnivores and 1% in vegetarians.

Analysis of the diet records showed that the vegetarians ate significantly more dietary fibre, polyunsaturated fats, magnesium and potassium, and significantly less total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol than did the omnivores.

I agree, once i looked through my house and the only thing with no sodium on the lable were my vitamins.

yeah, doctors. agree there too, well partly. sometimes we know more, they just do it more often.. (I dont care for doctors). Last time i saw one was to change my contriception. He didnt even know what i was talking about! I had to explain to him how many I needed a month, what it was, etc. sheesh.

I have a 32 year old friend who will also remain on blood pressure meds. for the rest of her life. Her BP without meds. ran 160/100.
Now she runs around 130/85, big difference. They had to change hers around some, as the side effects can be many or few depending on the person.

    Good luck!

Went up to Mayo for the mold sinus thing and they also found high blood pressure. Doctor said he had written a paper that the high blood pressure thresholds throughout the US were "too low" and that he was changing it. Turns out that I had "pre hyper tension." They don't care up there they treat it as high blood pressure. He said that since it wasn't too bad I had "minimal" damage to my eyes and other systems but that letting it go untreated wasn't a good idea. Also put me on an anti cholestral drug. I feel alot better and have alot more energy... so now I can exercise which is also helping. One comment. Late 20's you should not have high blood pressure however, with the lower guidelines now it is more likely to occur in your late 20's.

Even with the old highler guidelines many people were not being treated. Like many new ideas, there is resistance by many old line doctors to treating "pre hyper tension." Sounds like they found it and that with diet, lower salt and the medicine you reverse any damage
or at least prevent new damage.

Ya know.........that's what I thought. I am young enough that I shouldn't have this problem. But the more and more I look at it, I have had problems with this as long as I can remember. (Even while playing Football in High School...I can remember having High BP).

My Doctor told me it isn't anything that I have done, but just something that was passed along genetically. (My father has it, my mother has it, my grandfather had it, my great grandfather had it...and so on). So I am hoping that it is genetic, and not something that I did in my younger years...that may have caused the onset.

I guess that I should look at the positive things. It may keep me from getting a Stroke or a Heart Attack (actually the longer I take this stuff......the more it lessens my chance of getting them). I have always been the type of person however, that always looks at the bad and not the good things might do. I guess I need to change............

Give fresh garlic a try and drinking red wine helps a lot too..

btw, to add to Ferrah's post....

Yes, red wine helps. Why? Because it contains lycopenes. Lycopenes come from dark colored fruits, namely red/purple grapes. It is a MYTH that the alcohol helps--it does nothing. Drinking a glass of grape juice will do the same as a glass of wine.

But then again, like most people age 21 and over (and even some who are not), I prefer the wine!

I take high blood pressure and thyroid medications daily. I have to watch my sodium intake and with the thyroid sometimes I get lightheaded at night.

    I'll be on meds forever.

Yelle, you get red faced too???? Oh my god! I thought I was the only one!!! If I do ANYTHING physical, I turn BRIGHT red (like I just finished a marathon across death valley). I always thought it was cuz I'm really really pale. But I went to the doc on Friday (cuz I've been so exhausted for the past week that I can barely get out of bed) and she said that it very well might be a thyroid problem (which explains my unexpected weight gains and losses, and now, as you mentioned, the red face issue). Wow! Whaddaya know! It's amazing what you learn on these forums!!!

I've never had high BP tho...family has a history of LOW BP actually. But I definitely get lightheaded when I work out. HATE that dizzy sick feeling ya get!

Yea, I get red faced VERY easily. At work sometimes when the 3 stages are open, I am so red faced by the end, and I sweat easily too, not sure if that has anything to do with it, lol... gross.

I also gain/lose weight really easy too, depending on if I take my medications or not. Since they misdiagnosed me at first, I got screwed up even more & my hormones/moods were way bad so they have to givge me a prescription for Xanax & I had to take Celexa for a while too. Damn thyroid!

Ya know Yelle. I have a skin condition that my doctor hasn't been able to identify as of yet either. Sounds a lot like yours. When I rub my face in a few minutes, my face becomes totally flushed. Feels very warm and lasts about 2 to 3 minutes.......then it's gone. Another weird thing is when I stratch my arms or back or legs..........does the same thing in the same area that I scratch......except sometimes it 'puffs up' where my finger nails actually contacted the skins.

Doc isn't sure about it............and since it's just a bothersome thing........he isnt too worried about it.

Well high blood pressure runs in my family (on both sides) so the likelyhood that I too will get this is a definate possibility. My mother has been on those pills for about ummm 20+ years. The last time she went to the doctor, her doctor advised her of adding bananas into her food regimen. I would suggest you do the same! That will help lower your HBP. I hope that helps..
