Default SCREW that Atkins prick! He's poisoning you!

This guys says "Eat low carb stuff," Why is it that low carb stuff is so REVOLTING???? Why is it that Low Carb Bread makes the average stomach turn somersaults? Sure, you can eat meat, but you ever try eatiing a sandwich with that disgusting LOW CARB bread???? Try Low Carb Pasta? My Mom made some PastaBake and I had to eat this shit because my mom made it, she's a great cook. Translation, it's low carb bullshit. I fucking choked this nasty shit down because my Mom made it! Thank GOD my mom loves me. She was like "the noodles aren't very good are they" I'm thinking "Kill me now!" Look this shit will really make you lose weight, because you can't eat a goddamned thing! Everything the diet says you can eat is so revolting you starve!

My mom is forbidden from feeding my kid until she is done with that stupid diet.

No wonder Atkins weighed 250 lbs and died of a fucking heart attack.

Geez madcap whats with all the hostility in your posts today!

Anyway i am not a believer in high ( saturated ) fat diets but i do follow a lower fat version of the atkins diet and love it! including all the low carb products.... mmm i love his shakes

Also he did not die of a heart attack he sliped on ice.

Apparently his heart problems were caused by a virus he contracted 3yrs prior to his death

Stuart Trager, chairman of the Atkins Physicians Council in New York, told the paper that Atkins's medical records showed his heart problems were related to "cardiomyopathy" probably due to a virus.

"He had no record of having a heart attack," Trager was quoted as saying.

"My understanding is that he had no reported true evidence of classical angina (a pain in the chest that can indicate a blocked artery)," he added. "He did have a history of irregular heart beats."

Anyhoo who know's what the real truth is..... if its not your thing thats fine and for ppl like me and all the other 2million ppl who love this diet it , thats fine too.... to each his own, right?

hey mc im sorry for your feelings on this but please chill a bit!

being the lurker that i am, and also being obesse (i hope i spelled that correctly). i have tried various ways short of surgery to lose weight, including pills over the counter or otherwise.

i have for the first time seen a TRUE weight lose on the atkins. and not just the normal water loss fluctuation (spelling ?) i sow from everything else. (over 10 lbs in the first week) i have been eating more than i thought i would, and feeling really good energy wise.

hopefully your not in the same predicament weight wise as i am (hereditary obesity) or have to go thru whats its like to have to constantly work to keep you weight down. its not a fun life. and those that have this problem need as much support as they can get!

but if this post is just because you didnt like what your mom made for dinner? then i think you really need to look in the mirror and be thankful you could go out afterwards and eat what ever carb/sugar/fat enriched food you want. and keep your comments to yourself.

sorry it just peeved me alittle bit, no it really pissed me off!

I think this guy (Atkins) had a good point, but upon reading his book's he was a tad hard to follow for most.

What these guys mean by low carb is to watch the glycemic index of the foods that break down to nothing more than sugar in the body, and give you that shakey sugar rush, only to leave you 20 minutes later hungry for more food, resulting in weight gain.

He sets up strange diets. (Atkins) It's about lifestyle change. Not a diet.

People are being taught what foods are still carbs, but the ones our bodies actually can feed off of without making us hungry 20 minutes later, or getting that uncomfortable sugar rush that does lead to "Adult onset Diabetes." Carbs are great, we need them! But the right ones, say a whole wheat sandwich with turkey, onion and lettuce, over a donut for lunch.

Madcap, silly, the low carb stuff is nasty when you are used to the yummy high carb stuff. Atkins diet is NOT about starving at all. He was merely stating that the cavemen used to only eat meat, (protein and fats) and REAL carbs (like veggies, fruits etc)
Atkins says not to eat fruit for the first two weeks if you want your body in ketosis... (burning its stored fat for fuel)
Anyway, I am on atkins and I feel great. Any of the dancers at my job who are anemic and have done Atkins have felt a lot better. But I am not saying its for everyone. He just states that you should eat so many REFINED carbs.

He did not die because he was fat. He had slipped on ice a few weeks earlier. He gained a ton of weight between 40 and 60 lbs of fluid while he was in a coma. They showed a video of him 10 days before he died and he looked great. Not fat at all.

So he didnt die from being fat... just that while he was in a coma he probably had a heart attack and that was it.
Either way, people are realizing that low carb is the easiest way to lose weight, without sacrificing it all.

Pamela is right...its not a diet, its a lifestyle.

Wow Madcap. Where the hell did this come from? Simmah down, boy! LOL

I don't think she'll be done with the diet anytime soon, hon.. It's more of a lifestyle-change I think.

I have seen this work for MANY people. Not only do they lose the weight, but they learn how to eat. Maybe it's not the most perfect weight loss program, but it certainly has been proven to work. I've never read his books, or been on this diet, but I have always watched the carb intake, with the exception of when I was pregnant and had to retake that stupid Glucose screening test.. LOL.. Had to eat A TON of carbs before rescreening.. ugh.. I've never been sicker.

WFB, your post was great. I'm sorry about your problem. If this is working for you, keep at it. You'll get there. Hang in there. I honestly don't blame you for getting upset at the post. There was really no need for things to be said in such a way. One person's opinion doesn't represent everyone.

I too saw a video and pictures of Atkins a few weeks before he died.. He was NOT fat, and very healthy. Being in the coma caused him to gain major pounds. My father, who was about 150 lbs, soaking wet, had cancer and got pneumonia. He slipped into a coma. When he died a few weeks later (at 39), he was nearly 200 lbs. All dead weight. Also, my mother who has had Multiple Sclerosis since the age of 16, slipped into a coma 18 years ago (due to contracting Encephilitis when my little brother had chicken pox) , woke up 5 weeks later, and could not even "furniture walk" like she did before the coma. She's been in bed for 18 years, with the exception of getting up 1 hour a day in her chair. But, this is another story entirely. Back to the topic, she was 120 lbs, if that, before the coma. She is now 205 lbs, dead weight.

The point is, that's why this guy appeared to be overweight.

Had I been Atkins there's no way I'd have eaten that stuff. It's gross. I wouldn't have told anyone else to eat it either. Maybe I just have no idea what it's like to have two excess pounds on me.

I go over there to eat something, and this is what I get? I was dumbfounded (not to mention just grossed out). If you're gonna make low carb stuff DON'T MAKE PASTA!

Plus, i'm well aware Atkins didn't die of fatitude, and feel very sorry for his wife who's stuck defending him from stone throwers like me.

chill accepted mc, and im sorry you just hit a very tender nerv!

see i used to be very active, and was keeping my weight level at 200lbs, then in the fall of 2000 i fell 20' out of my deer hunting stand and fractured my l2 vertibre. i am lucky to be walking. the down side is i gained 50+ pounds while in my body brace and have been trying to loose it ever since. and like i said i have tried everything legal, questionable, or other wise short of surgery to lose it and this was the first thing that has worked. what is scary is im eating more than i used to but am just dropping pounds.

ladies thank you for the support, its a scarey thing to go thru and having done what i have doen trying to loose weight i appreciate it! in fact only recently have i been able to start to work out to help loose the weight. plus getting off of percocete wasnt fun either!

i now try to get to the club 3 times a week do 20 min on a recumbant bike (level 2), 20 min on the tread mill (2 mph) then 1 hr in the hot tub to be able to move afterward. im not giving up!

i know i will never look like some adonis god but im just working to be able to move.

sorry for the long drawn out speech. but i had to let you know my side also.

>going back to my hiddy hole<

p.s. i love the fact that the people on this bb are more honest and truthful then anywhere els i have surfed.

My father was obese. He tried every diet there was. The grapefruit diet. The microbio diet. You name it, he tried it. And what happened is what happens to people that go on any diet. As soon as he got off it, he not only regained the weight he lost due to the diet, but added on more weight than he had before he went on the diet.

Recently, we've learned that why the above happens is genetics. When you go on a diet, you are ... to your body ... experiencing a famine. When you get off that diet, your body does what human bodies have done for millions of years. It stores up an even bigger reserve for the next famine ... thus why you, in the long term, gain more weight by going on a diet. Unfortunately, this causes people to jump onto still another diet and it is a downward spiral from there on.

What the researchers that found out the above say is that you should never go on a diet, but gradually and thoughtfully change your diet.

1) Simply make gradual changes that your tastebuds willing to accept. For example, read the nutritional value of the margarine you use. Next time you go to the store, look for one that's better. Get the smallest container of it. Test it out. If it tastes good to you, you've just improved your diet. If it doesn't taste good to you, don't force yourself to use it. Simply find one that does taste good and is better than what you have been using. You'll be surprised on how effective just doing this is. And do it not just with margarine, but all your food. All without making your food taste bad.

2) Snack. Yes, you heard me right. Snack. Snack all the time. Ok, ok, I don't really mean eat snack food, but to just have a more continious eating habit. If you're hungry, get something to eat. Don't starve yourself (and that's exactly what your body thinks you're doing ... or, more accurately, it thinks a famine is now in effect) until your next meal time. You do that and your body will react accordingly and make you extra hungry at that next meal time to store up food (a.k.a. fat) for the next famine.

3) Exercise. Exercise. Exercise. Too many fat people wrongly think that their weight problem will be solved simply by way of diet. That's simply foolish and LAZY. And, no, you don't have to go and work out for two hours at a gym everyday. You just have to make gradual changes to have a more active lifestyle. Just like how you should do with your food. Gradual, thoughtful changes. Don't take the elevator. Take the stairs. Don't try to find the closest parking spot in the lot but park further away from the entrance. Have an active sex life. Go out for walks with your friends for your talks instead of curling up with them on a couch. And we're not talking about "power" walks either. Just casual purposeful walks. Due to how our bodies operate, power walks burn carbs and will exhaust you. Casual purposeful walks will never exhaust you and burn carbs for the first twenty minutes ... 50% carbs and 50% fat for the next twenty minutes ... and 100% fat from that point on. This is how humans were genetically built to travel long distances over the safari to our next food source back when we were nomadic apes just down from the trees.

4) Never eat diet food. You're not fooling your body. It knows what it needs and if you eat/drink diet food, you're simply telling your body that the local food source is poor and thus you need to eat more.

I've lived by the above and have never been fat. If you do the above, you will not see rapid results ... and that's good. You don't want rapid results as that causes your body to react to them. If you do the above, you'll gradually fall into your ideal weight range at about a half to a full pound a week. And, yes, this means that if you're over 50 pounds overweight, it will take you a year to be where you should be. However, once you're there, you're there to stay.

Unfortunately, while the above has been verified by a number of researchers, the diet industry has no incentive to promote it since it would essentially force them to cut their own throats. No diet books. No diet drinks. No diet food. No diet/weight-loss clinics. The above doesn't need any of that. And because the above doesn't have big companies that will profit from you doing it, you rarely ever hear about it. Instead you see Weight Watcher's, Lean Cuisine, and other diet industry commercials offering quick fixes for your weight problem. Sad. Truly sad.

As for Atkins, I've never tried it and don't know if it would qualify as a diet or a change in one's diet. If it follows the points above, it's then a good thing. If it forces you to eat what you don't like, it's a bad diet and expect to regain all the weight plus more once you go off of it.

I once ate two whole Pappa John's Pizzas. For lunch at work I usually hit Burger King and get two double Whoppers and a king sized order of fries. I eat everything in sight and can't gain a friggin ounce.

Well said Pumpkin Pie! I could not agree more. Learn and chose the right foods! Don't diet for weight lose, diet for a lifestyle change. Incorporate different foods as needed.

Eat healthy however. We really don't need all those donuts (Or any). Look at the veteran officers around

Madcap, these are not what your body wants then. All you are doing is clogging up your arteries. Try grazing on good healthy foods all day, you will gain. . PS enjoy being thin, you wear it well!

Madcap, I understand where you are coming from. My father is about 5'9, and he is soooo thin. He eats everything in site, and he must weigh 150 WET. hehehe He is very thin.

My mom, who is 5'2, was 216 lbs at her heaviest. She had type II diabetes. Anyway, she could never lose weight, adn just kept gaining until her doctor told her to try Atkins. And she did, and she lost some weight, but she didnt stick with it.
He then gave her an ultimatum... he said, "You will get WORSE with your diabetes, and suffer some heart disease if you continue, or Gastric Bypass is your other option."
She decided to do the surgery (this eliminated her type II diabetes) and since february last year she has lost 100 lbs. She is now 116 lbs, even, and she looks great. She now watches her diet. The scary this is, she may continue to drop weight. So this IS a severe surgery.
For those who do not want that, Atkins is a great way to drop a ton of weight, and by making the necessary changes, one can STAY healthy.

I've been considerably active trough the years through excersice so I've never been obese, but still had a hard time keeping a proper weight for my height. For around one and a half years I've pretty much changed my eating habits, reducing carbs. I've been able to lose weight and keep myself withing a healthy weight range. It's basically a matter of eating meat, poulty and other protein rich foods togheter with a proper amount of veggies and fruits. I lost my "sweet tooth" a long time ago (he he) and rarely go on a high carb binge at lunch time (like having french fries and/or rice with chicken for example). This, togheter with excercise, keep me relatively slim.

yeah once you do less carbs, your body will not crave sweets as much, or the rush you get when you eat carbs. Of course, those who still eat sugary stuff and pastas and stuff, dont know the rush really, but if you are on a low carb diet and you eat anything with starch or carbs in it, you feel it. Makes you feel HEAVY and yucky.

The whole Atkins craze is pissing me off too Mad. People jump on the bandwagon cuz everyone else says it works. Just for everyone's info, ANY *new* diet will work for people for a while--any psychologist can tell you that (it's a psychological thing--just look at the history behind lobotomies and electroshock therapy). Anyway, that is besides the point. The reason that the Atkins diet works is that because when you are cutting out ALL carbs, you are cutting out the main culprits--white carbs. Not all carbs are bad. Let me repeat that:
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]NOT ALL CARBS ARE BAD[/move]
White carbs--those with a high glycemic index (processed and refined, with lots of sugar)--are not very good for you. These carbs include white pasta, white bread, white rice, and table sugar. HOWEVER, brown carbs are VERY good for you and are ESSENTIAL for a healthy diet! Brown carbs are those rich in grains and oats, containing very little sugar. They include brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, and whole-wheat bread. I PROMISE you that you can use brown carbs in your diet and not only see the same results as cutting carbs completely, but you will look and feel BETTER!
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]YOUR BODY NEEDS CARBS!!![/move]

SCGIRL, when you stop the point of ketosis on your diet, you are allowed the good carbs (veggies, fruit, and moderate portions of brown carbs.) This is how my cousin dropped 47 lbs and kept it off.
Yes your body needs real carbs he mainly says to stay away from the refined shitty ones. (like aisle 3 at the grocery store) cakes, cookies, and all that junk is a nono. As he said, even rats wouldnt eat that only as last resort.

Madcap- It's sounds like to me that you need to bulk up and not by fatty foods. Try protein shakes, they work wonders!! I got the Lean Mean George Forman Grill for Christmas and it KICKS ASS! I love it. It makes any meat soo tasty. Has any one else tried the forman grill?

change your thinking too. I want to cut dairy out, or at least reduce it consiterablely, so I just told myself that and i went from being a ice cream junkie to not being able to remember the last time I ate ice cream. I dont punish myself for eating dairy, I just try not to. If given a choice, i choose non dairy. like not putting parmasan on my pasta. etc.

also margarine isnt that great for you, its basicly vegtable oil that has been chemicly altered by adding hydrogen, look at the ingredents hydronized oil, bad. its tans fatty and that is worse for you then real butter. I actually use just regular liquid vegtable oil in my cooking whenever the directions say butter. it works, and it better for me. (go omega 6!)

yep. when hungrey eat, when not hungery anymore (not full, just not hungery anymore) stop, even if there is still food on your plate. almost everything will save untill your next snack time.

Pumpkin pie is so smart. exerzise is life, not just at the gym.

4) Never eat diet food. You're not fooling your body. It knows what it needs and if you eat/drink diet food, you're simply telling your body that the local food source is poor and thus you need to eat more.
Ok, something I dont totally agree with. Yeah, most diet food is just crappy versions of real food. But some when added as a suplement to a normal diet, can actually be benifitial. Like those shakes (I like nestle sweet sucess). they are a great snack, lots of vitamins.

However, once you're there, you're there to stay.......
rapid is bad for your body, but good for buisness. sad. Thats why I think the atkins diet is a fad diet. fast results, early death. somday hopefully it will die down....

As for Atkins, I've never tried it and don't know if it would qualify as a diet or a change in one's diet. If it follows the points above, it's then a good thing. If it forces you to eat what you don't like, it's a bad diet and expect to regain all the weight plus more once you go off of it.
tecnicly its both. you diet first, well sorta. then you change your diet and you are suppost to live on lots of meat and low carbs the rest of your life. gross. too much saturated fat for me. somehow I dont see it being sustanible in the long run, you'll either die or wise up. of course if I tried it i would basicly be stuck to cheese since I am vegitarian.

my husband said he wanted to try it. but there isnt any meat in our house because the smell of it cooking makes me sick. he decided not to do it because of what I told him and because of the lack of meat in the house. so now hes on an asian veggie thing, he makes sechwan, and sweet and sour tofu and stuff. I like that stuff, its good. and LOTS of veggies! yum. He told me just the other day though that since we've been married he's been eating a lot more vegitarian like foods and he feels better for it. hes been gaining muscle and toneing better, he also has more energy and dosnt feel as weighed down.

in short: atkins bad. healthy eating and exersize good.

I think the reason "white carbs" are bad is that they arent whole. "brown carbs" are useually whole grains and they help your digestive system out A LOT. Kinda like exfoliating your digestive track. A lot of medical things can be helped through diet. let food be your medicine.

The thing with people who bash atkins, is that they know very little of it. You dont HAVE to eat all the fat, but it does aid in weight loss. He compared the american diet with that of the french and the french eat much more FAT than we do and are much healthier and thinner.
Anyway, this is a controversial subjet anyway. Always gonna be pros and cons... Hopefully we all find what we all like and need. hehe thats all for now folks
