    Default Can you do the splits ?

    Hi SW stars,
    I have been dancing for sometime and I can't do the splits.
    One of my New Year's resolutions is to be able to do the splits.
    I was wondering how many of ya'll can ? For those of you who can do the splits, how did you learn or prepare your body to do them ? I have been doing yoga for awhile and my yoga instructor is working with me to accomplish my goal. I would love to hear from you..

    This is going to sound so pathetic LOL but I cant do a split, and I have had countless of dreams that I could. (Not related to stripping) but I mentioned I used to cheer/dance and I always wanted to. I had dreams about it once in a while, and then after I became a dancer, I noticed I had 2 or 3 dreams since. LOL I wake up thikning I can do a split. I get rather close, but never ever... lol
    I wanna do it too... hey lets make that BOTH our goal

    I use to be able to do the splits. I love to dance hip hop and stuff like that. I was at a cousins wedding once and was dancing an jumped up and did the splits and you heard a huge thud. Everyone thought I hurt myself but I didn't. Doing the splits are long ove for me though only because I didn't continue my stretching. I would practive stretching all the time and go down as far as I could until it hurt and then hold it. I kept stretching out my muscles until I was able to go all the way down. It was very painful but it was awsome looking at the expressions on peoples faces when they saw i could do the splits and more so because I was a great dancer. I am kinda fly for a white guy Nickname was the Almighty Whitey. I got that in high school whenI was the minority and the majority were black and hispanic. That is where I learned to dance too.

    Hi farrah......I used to be able to...... cant anymore but ama start practising.....

    Also from what i have read a part of being able to do the splits is not just about stretching because our muscles are already loose enough to be able to do the splits...... you have to train your nervous system too. This subject was also touched on in the "info on stretching" thread ( i think ) so if you do a search on here it should come up.

    i have never been able to. I have tried since i was in gymnatics and ballet when i was a child. strangely enough i can put my foot behind my head......

    Me too ami...but even at gymnastics camp..I could never do a split all the way down..especially the "chinese splits"..I am soo jealous of these girls who get on stage and spread it in all directions and look sexy while they do it.....lol I am/was very athletic..just not super flexible for a dancer.

    Chinese and regular old fashioned way. I can do both.... stretching and taking things gradually is how you accomplish it. I was never a cheerleader, or took any type of dance class, but I always wanted to when I was younger, I learned by watching and then when I got into dancing, I started asking some of the girls who could do them what they did to learn.. and they all told me the same thing, its a flexibility thing, and you have to "teach" your body, and you begin by doing lots of stretches and conditioning exercises, Yoga helps too. Stretching your hamstrings really really good as well as your quads helps, but start slow.. it took me a year.

    I can do them either way, as well as go from one into the other. I'm pretty flexible, and just always have been able to do it since I was a child... Like Gynger said, stretching is important!

    I can do both ways. When you are stretching out, make sure that you BREATHE!! Taking long, deep breaths when you stretch helps get oxygen to those muscles and that helps you when stretching. You also need to learn how to open up the hips (hip flexors, etc). Some people just don't have the "anatomy" to do these. Just like some people can do back bends and have a super high, perfect arch...and some people can only do the "table" back bend where there is hardly an arch.

    I sit on the floor and stretch my legs to either side while I am reading or playing with my little girl. If you watch any tv or movies, then that is the perfect time to just work on stretching.

    Yep, I can do both types of splits.. I took 2 years of ballet and 2 years of gymnastics when I was younger, and it's something that I've never lost. Stretching is a big help too.

    My hubby didn't believe that I could do these splits, so I just had to prove to him that I can.. LOL

    The last time I did the splits was in 1986 when I cheered in high school. I'm determined to do them again and I'm doing a lot of stretching. I'm getting closer! only about 3 inches to go!

    Oh yes! Had to go check on both ways however. I can't seem to hit the floor all the way anymore, but it's still only a few inches off the floor.

    I learned, (and probably need to start doing this again) by sitting on the floor, stretching some, then take one leg and wrap it around the kitchen table, while stretching the other one as far as i could not being hooked on anything. Then i rotate to the other leg. It works.

    For me standing up will not work. I have to be moving on the floor already, and slide into a split.

    Stretching is the key. I need to practice more on that. I just noticed splits hurt now.

    I can do all my splits because I have done dance and cheerleading for years. The key is to stretch yourself to the limit, then past it. If you take pain killers like Tylenol, you will be able to stretch further. I got my splits by doing them up against the wall at a dance studio for years. The instructors always pushed on us, it hurt like hell, but it payed off. The key is to stretch, hard and long, EVERYDAY. Make sure your body is always warmed up, so you don't pull anything.
    I think as a dancer it is super important to exercise and stretch regularly. So get to the gym ladies and you will see the increase in energy, flexibility, and earnings.

    Generally, how long would it take (if a person stretches everyday for a long time) to finally be able to hit a split if they have never been able to do one ? I work at Body Tap in Atlanta and I mostly booty clap and shake dance and most of the girls I work with can put their legs behind their heads, hit splits at the drop of a damn dime and really pretty spread eagles. These girls make way more money and I understand cause splits and being limber look so @#$*!#! good. I have never been limber so my capabilities are limited it comes to working the floor and doing pole tricks. Got any pointers for me?

    Yes I can do the splits, it took a lot of practice. I recommend soaking in a nice hot bath for 20-30 minutes to loosen your muscles.

    Okay I followed everyones advice. I took a pain pill, a hot shower and held my stretch for about 10 minutes. I was left feeling a little tired and sick to the stomach. Has this every happened to anyone else ?
    I am also feeling sore in my inner thigh area. So should I continue to stretch even though I am sore ?

    Yes farrah keep stretching but honey PLS dont over do it remember it can take till up to a year to be able to do this if you haven't done them before...

    Ama start practising too and keep you up to date with my progress!

    Can't do the splits anymore and don't want to. I hate all pain. I also can't do a handstand, a pole trick or a back bend. I am almost 38 and I creep around the stage like a sexy slug.

    However, I can split a man from his money just like that!

    yes, even though you are sore you should still stretch.

    10 minutes is not enough time, imo. You should be stretching for at least 1/2 hour. Watch TV or read a book while you stretch. Push it to the max.

    What was it Jane Fonda said? "1, 2, yes, make it burn, 5, 6" ok I'm stuck on the 80's thread....

    Farrah, I would not recommend taking Tylenol before you stretch. You WANT to be able to feel any pain while you are stretching. That's your body telling you that you have reached your limit. And, although someone said that it's painful, it really shouldn't be. You can be sore as that is a result of stretching those muscles, but it should NOT be painful.

    Taking Tylenol on an empty stomach can make you nauseated. Taking a hot shower before stretching does not help "warm up your muscles". Warming up your muscles involves a little bit of cardio. Do some jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk (about 5-10 minutes) to really get the blood flowing to your muscles, then stretch (deep breaths) and read a book or watch a tv program and just relax into the stretch.

    Let me know how you feel next time.

    Thanks Venus..I warmed up by doing jumping jacks this evening. I also skiped the pain meds. I did about 30 minutes worth of stretching, including using the wall to do stretches as Mother Daisy suggested . I wasn't left feeling sick like I did yesterday. I am also beginning to feel more flexible which is nice
