We had a smoking section at school. Not a secret smoking section but an actual bona-fide smoking section.

And hey! I don't see an Atari on anybody's list. (asteroids, space invaders)

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill both ways through year 'round blizzards carrying their younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse where they maintained a straight-A average despite their full-time after-school job at the local textile mill where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death!

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say
it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet -- we wanted to know something, we had to go to the goddamned library and look it up ourselves!

And there was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter -- with a pen! --and then you had to
walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

And there were no MP3s or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to go to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or we had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and [email protected]#* it all up!

You want to hear about hardship? You couldn't just download porn! You had to bribe some homeless dude to buy you a copy of "Hustler" at the 7-11! Those were your options!

We didn't have fancy shit like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was it could be your boss, your Mom, a collections agent, your drug dealer, you didn't know!!! You just had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! A tall guy sat in front of you, you were screwed!

And sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 20 channels and there was no on screen menu! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! And there was no Cartoon Network! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning... D'ya hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK, you spoiled little bastards!

And we didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation videogames with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked ass! Your guy was a little square! You had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win, the game just kept getting harder and faster until you died!
    Just like LIFE!

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled, I swear to God!
You guys wouldn't last five minutes back in the 1980’s!

LOL Sapphire! We had a designated smoking section too, right out in the courtyard. They figured we were going to do it anyway, and they got tired of us setting off the fire-alarms in the bathrooms.. LOL

As for Atari, hell yes! My favorite was "Night Driver"? I think that's the name of it.

    I miss the 80's :

Oh my good lord!!! I wish I could find my class pic from 3rd grade--you guys would DIE laughing! I had..oh god, I don't even know how to describe this atrocity....a BIG bright pink head band with a huge flop of hair pulled in front of it (that wasn't cool for ANYONE--where the HELL did I get that from?!), a sweater shirt/skirt set (yes, the skirt was a sweater material too) which was all SPARKLY....AND I had the sweater TUCKED IN with a bright silver belt at an ANGLE across my big fat tum-tum..paired, of course, with some thick sparkly tights and sneakers (I had a things with sparkly stuff--still do!!!). I'm sure my description doesn't do it justice--I wish I could find the pic. Good god, I never thought I'd reach the point where I could laugh at that one....but now I can....there were many doosies through the years, that being ONE of the worst.

And as far as Atari goes....hell I wasn't even THAT cool! My parents had me playing an educational computer game that taught you adjectives! Now THAT was fun!!

Go ahead....tattoo LOSER on my forhead....I deserve it!

Yes you did Lexi, I see it now. Lethalsould that was HILARIOUS!

I thought of another one. Early 80's had us wearing Dove shorts. Late 80's came the bike short. And lets not forget those lovely stretch terry cloth headbands and wrist bands.

Oh, and don't forget talking like a Valley Girl, like totally, fer shure.

Jeans that were split at the ankle.

Oh yeah and those fucken hideous STIRRUP PANTS.

OMG Sapphire.. Those freakin stirrup pants.. LOL.. I can't believe I had like a ton of those damn things, ALL different colors. And, of course, the three different colored-pairs of socks to wear over them.. AT THE SAME TIME.. Ugh.. lol...

The other day, I got bored and decided to do a little cleaning through some old boxes.. Guess what I found?

Stirrup Pants (About 2 pairs), My favorite Jets tape from back then.. lol, and a TON of jelly bracelets.. I can't believe I saved this stuff, and wasn't even aware that I still had it.. lol

LOL Holiday, I must've missed this part of your post where the MTV thing was already mentioned.. Thems were the days.. lol.. Anyone remember on MTV, I think it was 1 night a week, but they had this really WEIRD show that did spoofs of songs through videos? I can't for the life of me remember what the name of the show was called.. but.. "Fish Heads" is still somewhere in my head, and sometimes out of nowhere, I find myself singing it.. lol

"Fish heads fish heads, rolly polly fish heads, fish heads fish heads, eat them up, yum!"

I remember the terrycloth headbands and wrist bands. I have a pic of me and my sis with them on. I have A SIDE PONYTAIL. With a huge sprayed on cowlick. LOL
Thats so 80's, those darn ponytails like, on the side of your ear? LOL

That reminds me - those really thin glittery headbands that were braided, and the big combs sticking out of your back pocket (early 80's), and Members only jackets, Gloria Vanderbilt and Jordache jeans... those were the days. Pony tennis shoes.... I had a Texas Instruments computer.

I have a few of those socks with balls too. But I hates leg warmers. Back in the day, I remember thinking I was hot sh*t wearing tightttttt spandex pants, and leg warmers and skippies. LOL

    SKIPPIES....dear god.

Does anyone else actually remember having a Commodore (or a vic 20) and typing in *line by line* the code in BASIC for a video game from a magazine? And then all you got after all that work was a guy running around a maze or a square Pong thing or some lame-ass sh*t? This took HOURS... And we did it. And we loved it! I had to be in Kindergarten or 1st Grade when that was happening. I remember my dad studying COBOL too and I felt like I was the hippest kid on the block. Fergoshsakes we had a *color* cartridge for our dot matrix printer! How could we not be cool??

I also remember waiting for the first MTV broadcast. I swear to my mom it was like the moon-landing all over again! "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles... and Nina Whats-her name and Martha Clearasil-Commercial were the VJs. Ugh! I feel really old now.

    Oh... and lest we forget...

    Intellivision and BETAmax.

Funny thing was, those BETA recorders that came out are now hot commodities for the home Audio recording set!!! What a world!

    Lol....I love this thread.

In addition to many of the other 80's trends I embraced, I also loved the charm bracelets and necklaces (the little plastic ones shaped like chains that you'd clip god knows how many charms onto). It was a status symbol in a strange sort of way to see who could collect the most.

I can't believe I used to wear pink plastic rollar skate charms.....didn't even skate
