    Default Detroit City Counsel Meeting

There will be a Detroit City Counsel meeting this morning at 8:30 a.m. to decide the future fate of Detroit strip clubs. Dancers and club employees are encouraged to attend as they will be allowed to speak.

New ordinaces would include no interaction with customers, no dances, no "erotic" performances, management liability for dancer and patron actions, plus much more.

I'm very curious to know what you mean by "erotic performances". Please enlighten me, sounds like they are trying to turn strip clubs into churches there. Washington (where I'm at) isnt much different, it has been for years. keep me posted.

I predict that the more strip club laws are "tightened" the more
unregulated and unsafe underground clubs will open up. Much
like Prohibition during the depression. At the present time I have heard there are a few underground clubs, but I have no idea where they are, and there certainly aren't many.

Not sure I would go in them anyway. I imagine there would be no rules in these types of clubs and I do look around for my own safety at places I go to.

While I think that certain aspects of strip clubs have gotten out of hand, (for instance the stage shows should come back and contact dances should be minimized a bit) going too far will cause an underground movement with all sorts of problems and undesireables running these types of clubs.

One aspect I would like to nip in the bud and get rid of is the
emerging "bed dance." I suspect bowing to political pressure, cities will go too far and then things will really get bad.

Why is this such a priority in this city? And the mayor here is a young black man right?

Pure informed speculation. The strip clubs in Detroit are more open and allow alot more than Indiana or the big brother city of the midwest Chicago. Chicago really has clamped down on clubs,
and this is not the chicago of the roaring 20's. But then you wouldn't want to live around Chicago if Big Al was back either.

I think Detroit is getting alot of political flack on drugs, nude women and problems in the strip clubs that "even Chicago doesn't have."

The Govenor of Michigan has something to do with this also. We need some Detroit people to comment.

Due to scheduling conflicts on the counsels behalf, the trial will be rescheduled for a later date. I will try to post the information as soon as possible for those interested.

There was however, a tremendous turnout. Hundreds of people turned out to show their support for the cause. The five speakers who we did have time for had wonderful points to make. Speakers were allowed two min. each to say their piece. The next time will be an all day event to allow everyone their time.

Why is this such a priority in this city? And the mayor here is a young black man right?
Yes Kilpatrick is a younger black male (hipocrite in my personal opinion). However the Superbowl is coming here soon. The city had 70+toppless/strip clubs, and three new casinos. The mayor and city counsil is trying to polish the citys image a bit.

I think Detroit is getting alot of political flack on drugs, nude women and problems in the strip clubs that "even Chicago doesn't have."
Exactly. However the problems woundn't be there if they'd enforce the current laws and ordinences. It's not just an issue of the quality of the entertainment, but the quanity of the establishments as well.

The Govenor of Michigan has something to do with this also.
No. Jennifer Granholm is working more on the State deficet.

I think they could work on both issues by dramaticly raising the penelity fines for caberet tickets. Have the police force routinely survey the clubs enforcing the current laws and issuing tickets to those who dont. Also a considerably higher fee for appling for the business licenses may prohobit so many clubs from opening. The money from these higher fees and penalties being applied to State funding.

I thought Jenifer Grahm had something directly to do with the more restrictive enforcement in the suburbs at Romulus (near the airport) of the Landing Strip and the clubs out there?

Possibly, everything I post is just how I see it from my own little bubble world. Plus I hate politics. I hope they do clean up the clubs around here. I just think they're proposing a little too much.

When I worked in MI last year, the clubowner and I had a long discussion about the anti-dance club movement in MI and what was being done by MI clubowners to supress it. There was an attempt at a state-wide anti-dance club law in the state legislature. All 80 clubowners in MI banded together to form a "trade association", hired a high powered attorney and lobbyist, threw money at certain politicians, and the would-be anti-dance club law never made it out of committee.

However, this is a new year. The people who proposed the anti-dance club law are still there (and most of them were from the Detroit area and Lansing). There have been very high profile news stories of California politicians who were caught accepting payola from the Galardi's in exchange for dropping opposition to proposed laws which would have affected Galardi owned clubs, which would make other politicians think twice about what might happen to them if caught doing the same thing. The MI anti-dance club forces undoubtedly know this. They also know that their chances of passage in a particular city i.e. Detroit are better than last year's attempt to pass a state-wide law.

hmmm well if it's a state thing.......i'm not lieing, but my uncle is head of legislation under granholm, him and the governer are the only 2 who have offices with fireplaces AND bathrooms in the capital...lol.

anyways it seems like officials in the detroit area should have better things to do, the news is saying that detroit is undergoing a "recent wave of crime" with all the murders lately and police are working 12 hour shifts now...

keeping the ordinances etc in control I think is good, however wasting time on baning clubs or interactions with customers etc, with all of the other stuff that goes on in the city......priorities seem a little off
