Default Working for ilkieenglish? Tutoring Koreans

Hi. I know this probably belongs under "other work", but it's not sex industry related, so I thought I'd have more of a knowledge base to pull from here, and people who might be able to help me may not look at the "other work" section. So thanks for bearing with me.

I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out if this would be a legitamate or worthwhile thing to do. Tutoring Koreans over the phone for a company called ilikeenglish. http://www.ilikeenglish.co.kr/bbs/wanted.php

They also sent me an email, which is VERY long. but basically, you have to purchase some piece of hardware for your computer which costs $100. And then purchase phone cards for the calls, which they reimburse you for. It does not pay A LOT of money, but enough to be worth my time and I would like the experience. What do you think? Thanks.

well, it ought to pay better than WalMart ... providing of course that you are actually reimbursed at some point for the front money and expenses you must pony up. I tend to get skeptical, though, whenever an offshore company expects me to spend my own money first, and invest my time and effort first, on a promise that I'll eventually get paid.

I would be very wary of any company suggesting that you need to a) buy a piece of hardware and b) by phone cards for the long distance charges prior to you making any money.

Is it a scam or not? The $100 piece of hardware what does this hardware do that a state of the art P4 PC doesn't do? The phone card sounds OK except is it their phone card company? I mean
is it ATT or sprint or somebody reputable? (I hesitate to equate MCI with respectable... but them too) Or is it "Eat at Joe's Won Ton
    Korea Phone company?"

It sounds novel. Use computers and high speed broadband and the telephone to teach english. Or is it a scam. Use computers to get people to buy useless hardware and marked up phone cards to
gather in money? Until you know for sure be careful of identity theft questions and giving away credit card data and SS #s.

For instance ACH wire transfers to your checking account to pay you are good, but put a hold at the bank that only paper checks
and you in person can take out money. Or set up an account that only gathers in money by wire with no wire transfer out possible.

I almost got took in by an ID theft ring last August that used a spoffed Experian credit agency web site (read fake) and asked alot of questions. About half way through I got mad at the questions and started answering them wrong. Wrong phone number slightly off SS #s, Master cards that were expired, bank accounts on closed accounts. I hit submit and realized the whole thing might be a scam
    and it was.

Later last year I got a whole series of questions from "my bank" citibank on my Citibank checking account by an e mail. Since I despise Citibank and Sandy Weil I have never had or never will have a Citibank checking account so I knew it was fake.

See if it is real first.

It sounds like a big scam to me. I'd check it out with the better business bureau before I'd get involved with them. Teach english to Koreans over the phone? Who the heck is going to pay the phone bill?Yeah, they ALL say you can make a lot of money. Do you personally know anyone who has at this occupation?

I guess what made me think it might be reputable, is it was posted on my University's Career Center job listings and I don't think they'd post questionable companies. I tried searching the BBB database online with no results. I wonder how else I can check on them.

I think this type of program is increasing in popularity worldwide since english is the language of business.

Still, scam companies can and do advertise with universities...think about the companies that will "find" scholarships for you. You pay them $150 to access information that is public to you. Keep researching them, look for entries in the Better Business Bureau, or even in public legal documents to see if any complaints have been issued against this company...

I would be VERY suspicious of this proposal. First, there are probably 50,000 US citizens in South Korea--there are 15,000 military + family. Given the 50+ year closesness of the US and Korea, English is probably taught in school. I am sure they have some kind of adult education.

What could this "mystery" hardware do? You are buying phone cards so it is not VOIP (voice over Intertnet Protocol). If it were the worst the could ask for wounld be a deposit. Any chat software could communicate words--any translation would be hardware.

Not because of any prejudice, I would be suspicious this is from NORTH Korea and the scammers (if any) want to use the fact that the long arm of Uncle Sam can't reach into the North, cause the Kim Jong Il government would tell them to shove it.. A lot of N.Koreans are desperate and would do a lot to get hard currency (if you can call the $ hard). If you can try to trace the IP of this outfit. If it is the North run as fast as you can, they have no reason not to commit a fraud. If it is in the south and you can verify this, research further, it could be a good (but weird) cause.

It's a scam. We get asked these types of questions a lot on the business newsgroups I help moderate. If you would like their input on this one, post to misc.business.moderated.

And as a general rule, NEVER pay upfront anyone to work for them ... especially one that solicites you from afar. These are always a scam. I've never seen one that was an exception.

just randomly e-mailed you? sounds like spam. never open spam you are just encouraging them. its not really a job if you have to buy somehthing, its a company that sells you stuff. thats how they make money. if they thought you were actually worth something they would interview you and then give you the software.

    Hey Anais,

This looks like a total scam to me. What you might want to do is talk to someone in your University's Career Center and see what criteria they require for companies posting these job listings. They may take on any postings without checking out the company and if this is the case they should be glad you brought this to their attention so other students won't be taken by this scam.

They didn't just email me randomly. i saw the job listing on the career center website and looked at the company web page and asked for them to email me information. There is a phone # and email address where I can ask questions so I am trying to organize my thoughts as to what I should ask.

    1) Why do I have to pay you to work for you?

This kills the deal right there.
