Default You're to _______ to dance....

Every Sunday I teach dance class at my club which is open to newbies and women interested in dancing. Last Sunday i had two great ones come in. : I'm not sure how to say this without coming across as mean so I'm just going to say it. The two were a mom and her daughter, the mom was 51 years old and looked like an old biker chick who drinks and smokes way too much and her daughter was slighty obese, not just a big girl mind you but way to big to dance. The manager told them that they could take class and then I would let him know if they were ready to audition.

The mom chickened out and only her daughter did the class but she was very reluctant to try anything so I told her that she wasn't ready to audition becasue if she can't dance for me and a couple of other girls she can't dance for a room full of men. Got out of that easy.

She and her mom talked to me afterward and wanted to know if they had a chance of getting a job. I managed to talk my way out of that by saying that it all depends on how you look and dance but I stressed that I don't do the hiring and I couldn't tell them for sure if they would get hired. NOw these two REALLY want to dance, they had been calling all week asking when they could audition, etc.

I know that they will never get hired and I told the manager that he needs to tell them this if they come back, I've got some great girls with good potential that I'd rather focus my time on. If by some chance he decides to pawn this off on me what is the best way to let these women know that this is not the career for them and they are not what we are looking for.

The best way is for the manager to do his job and sit them down, buy them a drink and say, "this is not the career for you and you aren't quite what we are looking for at out upper class showbar."

Unless you are in management, that is what managers are for... give people bad news. Now nobody likes to give people bad news, they might really be biker chicks for instance with lurking biker guys.
    But I doubt it.

What would happen if you tell the manger, "That is your job mon.."

Hehe...I hire bellydancers for my restaurant and have to do the same thing for women trying to get a gig at my place...it really sucks..but alas it is the job of the hiring manager.

Are you only offering these dance classes for potential and current strippers at your club? Can you market the dance class as "stripperaerobics", open to women of all ages and types??

This way you can make some money, have some fun, and not just have pressure to train women who will be strippers. For the girls with potential, you should give them a few private sessions (extra charge of course!)

The class is open to anyone that wants to learn. two weeks ago I had 12 forty year old women show up! It was one ladies birhtday and they wanted to learn to dance sexy at the country club! These ladies were awesome! They came in wearing fishnets and boas!

Most of the girls that show up are looking to dance at the club. I don't mind teaching girls taht want to learn but the daughter of this duo is the only one that tried and when I asked her to try what I had the other girls doing she didn't want to.

I'm definately going to tell the manager that he nneds to do his job, all I get is a house fee waiver and that's not enough to have to do some elses dirty work.

Oh I feel for you hon, I have a school in florida and I have to turn about 80% of the girls who apply away. Some are beautiful, but lacking in the brain department. It'sa hard call, especially since I get paid to do it! I would love to take girls who dont havea shot in hell, put the money in the bank, and forget about them, but I cant do it
    Good luck to you!

I'm in a similar delicate position, except the person wanting to dance is a friend. She's very cute -- under normal circumstances, any guy would want to go home with her. However, she really is about 15-20 lbs too heavy to dance. Sorry, but dancers are held to a higher standard. I'm not really sure if I should say something to her before she tries to get hired, or what I would say if I did.

Jenn where's your school? I want to take a pole dancing class but it's in South Beach and I live in Broward. Do you have any classes like that?

If it is looks that is the problem, then the most humbling expierence is to show them what they really look like with either a mirror to show the ladies how they look from the back naked or use a polaroid photo. We rarely see ourselves fully from the rear, and when we do, it can be quite shocking. Especially if the girl was obese. She may never check herself out from the neck down fully naked.

Otherwise just be polite and tell her what a great hair style she has (or other positive attribute) then gently let her know that if she can get down a size (or 2 or 3 or 4 sizes) smaller she would be just PERFECT for the job. Then follow up that in every job, most folks can't just walk right in off the street to the board room, it takes training, education and hard work. Exotic dancing isn't any different, but the training is about looking beautiful and fit and stylish, and getting to that point is hard work.
