Default Burned in a Tanning Bed?

For the first time ever I got tanned in a tanning bed. The employee suggested I tan without goggles so I don't get any unwanted lines. Now my skin is red and itchy and my eyes are sooooo sensitive and dry I have to wear sunglasses all day and put eye drops in. I rubbed aloe vera on my burned skin and it helps a little. What happened? Should I not get tanned again? What can I do about my eyes and the discomfort?

I can't believe she told you not to wear goggles. That is like the one thing they have plastered everywhere where I used to tan...that you absolutely had to wear goggles or you could damage your eyes.

Tanning beds are different than the sun's radiation, which is why your skin itches. I hate that....happens to me too.

Yeah I have been told that before too..it is to prevent those damned racoon eyes !! There are now things called winkies they are disposable and you fold them to fit over your eye.
For the burned areas apply nonfat plain yogurt a couple times per day and leave it on for 10-30 minutes. Then follow with the aloe. Be sure when you tan to look for the bronzer beds. They can be a little more expensive but, you won't burn and the tan looks more golden.

Hey girl, I was in the SAME boat as you about 2 weeks ago.
I burned myself to a crisp, I mean LITERALLY, I was a lobster. lol
It went away after 2 days, but follow Farrahs advice. Worked wonders, and it cools ya down.

If you didnt wear the goggles, which sometimes I dont do, I hope you had your eyes CLOSED right? I always keep them closed and only peek out once in a while to see how much time I have remaining. Be very careful with that hun... you can cause maaaajor damage. I have a little spot in my eye that is black, and I never had it before. Sometimes I wonder if its from the tanning bed.?? Just be careful not to open your eyes in the bed.
And yes, go for bronzing lotions and beds. The others sometimes make you tingle, and make you red.

I really can't believe they told you not to wear goggles! I work in a tanning salon part time and we require you to wear goggles. you will not get racoon eye. UV rays pass through the thin shield of your eyelid and can cause serious damage to your eyes. Also you should only be going 10-11 min your first time in a tanning bed (20 min bed) & use a lotion that it indoor tanning approved (this can really accelerate your tan as well as soothe and moisturize your skin afterwards)

thanks guys. the yogurt really helped soothe the pain and itchin. Then I followed with aloe vera gel with lidocain. Whoa! Did that feel great. As for my eyes I'm just gonna have to deal with them and keep putting eye drops in and just wait for them to heal. I didn't close my eyes and now I'm kinda upset because no employees gave me any advice or anything. I'm going there to complain to the manager today. Thanks for the advice guys.

As for me tanning ever again. I don't think it will ever happen.

Wow I can't beleive she actually told you not to wear the goggles!! I've never heard of Anybody suggesting that. Hmmm lawsuit?-jk- Yogurt fixes everthing doesn't it (facials, sunburns, yeast infections) 2 weeks ago at a brand new tanning salon I bought a pair of neon green see through goggles to prevent the whole racoon thing. Now THAT is high tech. I used to peek off and on through out my 20 minute sessions when I was young and now I have a really hard time driving at night. So be careful because in a few years it might (obviously) affect your eye sight. I don't need glasses or anything but I can tell there is a change. My eyes can't adjust to dark/darker. It suck, especially since I am a dancer and have to drive at night. Now I feel pretty silly about it

OMG...I cannot believe that you didn't wear goggles. You can't sue them because when you fill out the card that they collect your information on, it clearly states on there that you MUST wear goggles at all times while in the bed...if you do not, you do so at your own risk. But, do tell management that they have someone suggesting no goggles. Big no-no. I don't do the tanning bed anymore...dries out my skin so bad I can't stand it.

If you want a tan with no tan lines, then get the Mystic tan...more expensive, but much better for your skin than the fake-baking.

    Hope your eyes are ok.

omg you had your eyes open? If you tan again, just dont open them, or wear goggles. I doubt you will have any ill effects just after one time, though so I wouldnt be too worried, but they shouldnt do that.

Rican, turn the dang intensity down! Either that or shorten your exposure in the bed. Ultraviolet is what dermatologists use to give a controlled sunburn to treat acne.
The fact that they told you not to use eye protectors testifies to the incompetence of their employees. Go to another tanning company and go gradually.

If they told you not to use gogles GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. I used to work in a tanning salon and it's actually illegal to do that. You could have permanenlty damaged soemthing if you had continued going.
You can always burn in an indoor tanning bed. Start out going for like 3-5 minutes and work your way up to the full time. There are places like Hollywood tans(which isn't cheap) who have different level beds for different intensity levels.
When I first started tanning I always burned my butt and that really sucked.
