Just out of curiosity, do any of you donate to charities? If so, any favorites?

I donate regularly to March Of Dimes™. I was born with a birth defect called Hydrocephalus (water on the brain). Without this organization, my parents would have been completely in debt due to operations. They even made me poster child one year. Luckily, I was basically "cured" of the condition following the removal of my 3rd shunt in '96. I've donated to them for years, and will continue to for the rest of my days.

I also donate to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, for MS research to find a cure. My mother has had this disease since the age of 16 (youngest reported case back in 1966). She's been bedridden for 18 years now. Terrible disease it is.

Finally, I've donated to the Station Fire Relief Fund, and also donated blood in the days following the incident. Can't believe it's been a year. Just got back from visiting the site, I do it regularly, but tonight had a great deal of significance.

Feel free to elaborate on your answer to the poll. I've rambled on terribly.. lol

My favorite charities are:

Institute of Justice www.ij.org

CATO Institute www.cato.org

Electronic Freedom Frontier www.eff.org

Luekemia Society www.leukemia.org/hm_lls

The first three are fighting the good fight (I'm a hard-core libertarian) and the last one is due to my father dying of this disease after a five-year fight.

I'm a huge supporter in the belief that everyone needs to help out everyone to some degree. It might be as simple as donating money or clothes to a charity or something. For many years, I worked at a summer camp for underprivaledged children. It was very rewarding and after 12 years, I burned out of it (had been working in the organization since I was in high-school). Now, my wife and I work in an organization helping to rescue ex-racing greyhounds and get them into new homes. Granted, I don't find it as being parallel to helping to end Multiple Sclerosis, and yet I feel it's helping out my community to a degree. I know the dogs sure love us for it. I think the last mainstream charity I worked with was the United Blood Services on Sept. 11. When the World Trade Center was attacked, everyone rushed to the bloodbanks. Unfortunately, due to my travels abroad I wasn't able to donate at the time. I still was able to help though. Being a magician (retired) I called all my magician friends and we all went down to UBS and did close-up magic for the hundreds of people in line to donate blood. We weren't trying to demean or diminish what had happened that day. We figured that it was a way we could help people more noble than us who took time out of their schedules to donate blood and save lives. It was wonderful. About an hour after we arrived, electronics stores brought televisions and generators so people in line could watch the news. Restaraunts brought food for everyone. It was a really wonderful thing how the community came together that day during such a tragedy.

The Make a Wish Foundation of America ( http://www.wish.org/ ), and it's local branches do real, tangible work every day and it's a wonderful charity to support. They bring joy into the lives of children with life-threatening or terminally diagnosed conditions.

As far as medical research goes, The National Breast Cancer Foundation ( http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/ ) is one of the more noble foundations for saving lives as well as having the most impact per donation. It's estimated that 1.2 million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and over 40,000 will die from breast cancer this year. This foundation is one of the few that assures that over 80% of donation funds given go directly into providing free mammograms to women that cannot afford it as well as research projects (national requirement is only 50%, which most charities ride right on the border of).
It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.

80% is great. You always have administrative costs, but I remember a few years ago when GoodWill was using about 80% of their donations to administrative fees and 20% to actual helping people. Maybe the figures are wrong here, but I remember the figured were astonishingly bad and they got in a lot of trouble for it. I think it may have led to the 50% law.

One other thing I'd like to add though. I'm sure anyone who has worked with a charity will tell you that whatever you do or give, you get back a thousand fold in personal reward!

I give to [url=http://www.children.org/]Children International (where I'm sponsoring Junior), March of Dimes, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Jewish National Fund, Opportunity Village, public radio and various others. I believe in "Givers Gain", which you can call Karma or "You reap what you sow", I just feel its the right thing to do.

Blade, I know all about tight money, however there are still ways to donate, even if its old clothes or time. I give one of my charities $60/year, which they take out of my account $5/month. Not a lot, and every little bit helps.

I'm a charity! Donate to me!!!! The "SCGirl Multiple Needs Foundation"!!!! I need so much money for so many different things I can't even recall them all (tuition, books, rent, utilities, mom's gravestone, sister's clothing, food, my doggie's needs, etc). Sorry, I'm being pathetic....I'll stop!

I'm a FIRM supporter of local animal shelters. That's where I got my beautiful doggie from! His name is Nemo and he's a 6 y/o cocker spaniel. He was found by the side of the road, gorged on garbage (weighing 50 lbs when he SHOULD be 25), full of ticks and fleas, and matted and dirty beyond recognition. Apparently someone drove him out into the wilderness and left him there--no idea how long he was out there on his own. But the Oswego County Humane Society took him in, got him cleaned up, and placed him with a foster family. We found him online at www.petfinder.com --and absolutely WONDERFUL site dedicated to the adoption of all kinds of animals. And now I have this beautiful, wonderful, bright and loving addition to my life and I am eternally greatful, not just for them enriching MY life, but his as well.

I donate to the Paralyzed Veterans fund all the time. At first the got me by sending me all these stickers with your address on them, and they ask if you can donate. I did not the first time (I was like 19) and they kept sending me stuff. Finally, I said, "Wow these people are really sweet... they really DO send you free stuff and dont expect a donation" but your heart gets the better part of you, and I donate every time they send me something. They are wonderful, and its helping the veterans, who fought for this country.

AWESOME story SCGirl. I love animals. (I have 4 dogs). I wanna start donating and helping animals. I love them all to death!!!!!
Did anyone see the 4 black puppies that a sanitation worker found in the garbage? They must have been 3 days old. Some idiot threw them away, and the garbage man heard a noise, and found them. He took them to a shelter, and now they are being fed and taken care of. They will be ready for adoption in 7 weeks.

I currently donate $15 to WWF Australia and $20 to Australian Bush Heritage Fund ... both monthly.

I also "put aside" 5% of my total weeks earnings (incl. tips) for donation to any other charities that take my fancy...

For instance.. I've given "once off donations" to... Wildcare Australia (local charity that rehabilitates injured native wildlife - I would love to become a carer for them one day), Australian Conservations Foundation, Birds Observers Fund Australia and Birds Australia....

I like to donate to various charities that fall into the environmental/animal (and/or local) category as that's where I feel my money would be best used.

As for donating my time... if I wasn't so drained due to work on my days off (I get alot of half days off and only one full day off each week)... I would. For now, I donate what I can which is mainly money and then clothes.

Besides, I have the belief that in order to attract money (since money is just another form of energy)... you have to keep it flowing.. donation is just one way to keep this energy flow. As long as I donate (it doesn't have to be much just SOMETHING)... I shall never be poor. ..and I'm not just talking in a monetary-sense either...

As a Georgia based artist, I find that government funding is ridiculously low. So I tend to donate a lot of time and reosurces to museums and in-school art programs. I give clothes away to an organization that helps low income women to find their first office job. I babysit at a homeless shelter (that's more difficult than most because some people have very poor manners) & volunteer in my local public school system. The people in the low income areas are all sick of my refurbished computers (my boyfriend is a techie and at one tiem we had 14 old desktops). And the Shriner's are the reason that my baby sister can walk--so they always get a big one from me.
I don't give homeless people money , but I'll buy them something to eat.
And roses that are given to me by customers get dropped off at my local county E.R. cause my b.f. hates for me to bring them home --it always brightens the nurses faces--although I get an equal amount of dirty looks because of my makeup at 4:30 in the a.m.

I follow this too, Nina. I like to know that my money is going to help them, not hurt them. At one of the clubs I worked at, we had a guy that would regularly come into our parking lot and collect cans, and then he'd come into the club and ask us for money so he could eat. Sometimes we'd all chip in a few dollars, and order something for him. Other times, management would put him to work, washing our cars, which he did willingly and happily.

I sponsor a child in Sri Lanka thru a program much like the one NVJosh is involved with. I hope to add a second sponsorship later this year.

I also donate used clothing and toys to a local group, and my extra change usually goes to an organization that runs summer camps for those less fortunate than I was. I also try and support the local food bank when then run their quarterly drives.

I have had one best friend since High School, tho we live far apart now we still try and stay in touch(thank gawd for computers and high speed internet lol). Unfortunately this year her parents home burnt down, and they lost everything. The fact that they werent insured only made matters worse.
Now her parents have moved into the two bedroom apartment with my gf her hubby and her 3 little ones until they can get back on their feet. I dont consider helping them to be charity exactly, but I did what I could to get them the cash to atleast have some breathing room. Several other friends have also come forward to help out and it is true that "at times like these you see who your true friends are."
Its a reminder to everyone to keep their insurance current as well I suppose.

I wanted to offer some food for thought. I'm not preaching here at all, but I thought this is appropriate to the conversation and an interesting phylosophy.

I Judaism, charity is called Tzedaka. A formal code of Tzedaka was created by a rabbi named Maimonides many generations ago, in biblical times I believe.

Maimonides was once quoted as saying, ""Even a poor person who lives entirely on tzedakah must also give tzedakah to another."

He also wrote what is still adopted in Jewish law as the rules to Tzedaka, or charity. There are eight levels to Tzedaka, and all are considered good deeds, but all have different levels of value. They are:

1. A person gives but is not happy when s/he digs into the pocket in order to give.

2. A person gives cheerfully, but gives less than s/he should.

3. A person gives, but only when asked by a poor person.

4. A person gives without having to be asked, but gives directly to the poor. The poor person knows he gave the help, and the giver knows who was benefited.

5. A person gives a donation in a certain place, but walks away so that the giver does not know who received the benefit. The poor person knows the giver however.

6. A person makes a donation to a poor person secretly. The giver knows who was benefited, but the poor person does not know who the giver was.

7. A person contributes anonymously to the tzedakah fund which is then distributed to the poor.

8. The highest level of charity is to give money and help to prevent another person from becoming poor. For example, teaching a person a trade, finding them a job, teaching them to fish.
