Are you sure that you aren't losing any weight? Are you clothes still becoming loose? How about your portion sizes? Are you eating enough? Pamela's right, you have to eat to lose weight otherwise your body goes in to starvation-mode.

You seemed to be losing huge amounts so maybe its because the weight loss is slowing down, not that it has actually stopped. Your probably gaining muscle aswell and alot of the weight you would have lost in the induction phase is water weight too.

Also i would suggest upping your cardio and incorporating weights into your workout, now that you are losing more weight. 2-3 days of execise is enough for maintenance but for weight lose i would suggest more.

You have hit a plateau (sp) which happens..... all you need to do is adjust a few small things. Also in the atkins book it gives you tips on what to do if your weight loss seems to stop.

PLS PLS PLS dont let this dis-hearten you hun, your doing great!!!!

GOOD LUCK! we all support you!

Seraya.

Patience Was!!!
Four weeks and you made a good start. Consider another way of saying the same thing as you applied to a different area. "I go to church 2-3 times a week and have not coveted my neighbors wife in 4 weeks, but I don't feel any holier than last week." It is a life style change--these do not happen in a straight line. The easy part goes fast because it is easy. Then things slow down. Keep doing what you are doing and progress will continue.
Keep up the good work.

no carbs is not a good thing...veggies are complex carbs...and you need carbs for energy among other things...

so...you are probably getting too much fat...too much protien...and obviously...not enough complex carbs...

also...2-3 times a week is...ok...if that's all you have time for...but a half hour everyday...or 4-5 times a week...is better (unless you're into the hardcore bobybuilding - then going in everyday may be too much)...

try getting FLEX magazine (oxygen mag won't work for you...for obvious reasons)...i don't agree with all the protien supplimentation...but some of the nutritional information is good...i'm always going to plug weight training AND cardio...

eat a lot of veggies...drink a lot of water...go easy on the LEAN protien....make it a lifestyle change...not just a temporary 'diet'...and you should be ok...

good luck... :
Why do some people still have to fight...to get the same opportunities...that are given to others??...

Look out for self...because noone else will...AND
The greatest revenge in the world...is success...

Reclusivness...is a good thing.

Hey Dahling..

Hang in there! I'm not too familiar with the Atkins Diet, so I don't know the specifics and restrictions that go along with it. But I do know that with any diet, you'll have times when you're losing a bunch of weight at once, and then you'll slow down a bit. But don't worry, it won't be that way for long. It'll pick up once again and you'll start losing again.

With the Atkins Diet, is it strictly NO carbs? Or is it just limited? It could be that your body is needing some carbs, at least a little?

I definitely agree with what everyone else is saying.. WATER is a very big part of any diet, as well as veggies (especially the greens).

I wish I could offer you some tips, but unfortunately like I said, I'm unfamiliar with the Atkins Diet, or any diet really. I have another method that I've followed for 8 years now, which is quite controversial here, so I haven't posted when I've seen it mentioned.. lol..

But Hunny, what I do offer you is my total support. You'll do this. Just remained focused on your goal, and anything will be possible.

We're all here for you!

I've been on the Atkins Diet. Yes, you have hit a plateau. What you need to do is go off the diet for a few days. Don't go nuts or anything... just eat some carbs. You may gain 2 or 3 lbs. back, but then when you go back on the diet, you will begin to lose quickly again. At least that's what worked for me...

If you start to feel light-headed or nauseous while on the diet, eat some carbs. You won't gain, and you will immediately feel better. Once I did feel sick, I ate 4 Reeses Cups and it did the trick. Healthy? No, but it sure did taste good!!!!

There is a chapter in the Atkins book about kitting a plateau...he suggests the Kekwick diet which is restricted carb and 1000 calories, eaten in 5 meals per day.

patience is a virtue.

i'm not a fan of the atkins diet, and i'm in great shape and have played around with many different types of diets to feel their pros, cons, and results first hand. but i'll save my energy and let you see for yourself. i hope it works for you.

but anyway, changes in the body take time, including losing weight. your body is adjusting to reduced calories, etc. just hang in there and keep going!!!you can do it.

YES! Definitely increase your cardio. Add five minutes each week and do different types of excercises. Change the kind of cardio you do. Are you a gym member? ALSO, For long term results, eat a well balanced diet with carbs included. Atkins is basically a crash diet which rarely works. Work at it steadily. The hardcore discipline will develop and keep up when you begin seeing results. Do your homework!

You gotta have good carbs (from vegetables and root vegetables like potatoes). Bad carbs (sugars, enriched flour, pasta) Are no no's. Plus you need fiber, excercise, water to keep you hydrated and full (thus alleviating hunger somewhat). Too much protein and no carbs is a killer, from what I've heard.

I've heard the same thing about the Atkins Plateau - increase your veggies and fat for a few days, then go back on the diet. Also, it's really important that you are getting enough carbs and fat. A tablespoon of cream a day will actually help you lose weight. It's not neccessary to starve yourself - when I did Atkins I ate like a pig and still lost weight fast (and then gained it all back, but that's another story).

but if I recall, on atkins, the ketosis inducing period doesnt MATTER about fat.
Wasfatboy, I'd say check the book. I think if you UP your fat intake, you will lose more weight; remember he says FAT induces ketosis faster than starving or anything else.
Just double check
GOOD LUCK!

I have only done about atkins for a couple weeks and I have seen some substantial weight loss (though I am sure some is water etc). There is a chapter in the book on plateaus.

I dont want to start a atkins good or bad debate here...but, he does mention in the book that everyones body is unique and weight loss for one individual may be much different from that of another.

I am also sure that as much as we would love to keep loosing 12-16 pounds every two weeks, that just isnt realistic and the rate of loss will diminish to a more reasonable and sustainable level. I know that personally it took me 10+ years to put the weight on, so spending a year or so taking it off seems reasonable (ok actually it seems frustratingly infuriatingly (sp?) slow...but I need to be realistic) lol

I also hear that you shouldnt drop your portions below the recommended levels and be sure to get your veggies as required(3 cups a day) for induction.

Good luck and be patient, on the positive side since muscle weighs more than fat, your new exercise program may be adding some muscle and therefore weight while your percentage body fat is still reducing. How are the clothes fitting? Thats often a good guide as well.

Finally I know there is a section discussing medications in the book, these can also affect your weight loss. Check it out.

Best wishes from the frozen North
Canuck

Good luck, FBR. I'm not an Atkins fan, either. But some things that work for me, when I let them:

Eating healthy makes me feel better, gives me more energy during the day, and lets me sleep better.

Exercise is paramount. We can talk all we want about various nutritional theories, but if we take in more calories than we expend, we're going to gain weight. Work those calories.

Aerobic/cardio is especially important. When you lose weight, where does the weight, that matter inside your body, actually go? Some of it is secreted or excreted, yes, but the vast majority is metabolized to carbon dioxide and aspirated (exhaled). So exercise that makes you breathe hard is good for weight loss.

Weight training is also nice if you've got the type of metabolism that allows you to build muscle mass. It takes more energy to maintain muscle than fat. But remember, muscle weighs more than fat.

If you plateau, so what? Stick to a healthy diet that includes exercise! If you don't see that oh-so-all-important weight loss for a while, remember that you are improving your blood chemistry, you are lengthening your life, you are improving the quality of your life, and you are benefiting yourself in ways that go far beyond weight loss.

Stick to it. If you live healthy, the weight will go. This has to be a lifestyle change, not just a stab at losing weight.

Again, good luck!

Don't reduce portions. There is no need to starve on this diet. The less you eat the more your body is fighting to hold on to the fat that you have right now. Your body is assuming you are starving. If you go off the diet for a few days, your body will readjust. What you are doing is "fooling" your brain into thinking you have food again. It will jumpstart your metabolism. When you begin the diet again, you will be starting anew. This is the best way I can describe it. Try it, it works.

As someone mentioned earlier it is a "LIFESTYLE CHANGE" not a diet.
Diets are unnatural and IMO only hurt you. Also IMO, get off that Atkins.

I hope you educate yourself wasfatboy, about the different "fad" diets and decide that what you need for yourself is a lifestyle change. Maybe the following will help you...

My stats

30 year old male
6 foot 2 inches tall
220 lbs. down from 250 something

My "guidelines"...

Water 1.5 to 2 liters spread throughout the day everyday it's hard but at the same time you start to crave it after a while. But it still difficult hehe. I recycle the "aquafina" 1.5 liter bottle using my at home Brita water filter. I buy new bottles every week or two because the plastic starts to degrade/wear out. I like this bottle because it has the huge open end. This does not include any extra water I drink during workouts.

medium/small meal every 3-4 hours. I always try remember to eat only enough to not be hungry and remind myself that I will be eating again in 3 hours. I make sure to not even get close to full!

1st meal of the day as soon as possible. Breakfast...

One and a half cups of Quaker oatmeal (not the microwave kind) cooked with water instead of milk with a half scoop (think small icecream size) of creamy (crunchy on occasion) peanut butter added in the last minute of the 5 minutes of cooking and stirred. add a "LITTLE" 1-2 "SMALL" spoons of brown sugar to sweeten. Lots of cinnamon. Also I cut the oatmeal with a little milk so it's not a lump of "meal" heh. I always try remember to eat only enough to not be hungry and remind myself that I will be eating again in 3 hours. I make sure to not even get close to full!

2nd meal about 3.5 hours later. Lunchtime...

I don't eat "junk" fast food anymore unless "ABSolutely" necessary and then if I am forced to I will take the extra minute to think about what I am ordering and how it will or won't fit into my new lifestyle. I won't lie to myself, if I make a decision based on cravings or efficiency I make sure I understand the impact it will have. Maybe I should clarify. It should be pretty obvious what "junk" is. That is not to say that all "fast food" is junk. There are lots of fast food places nowadays that have "healthier" (<-think about that word) alternatives. Most of the carbs I get daily are in this meal when I can arrange it that way. I like to eat small amounts of pastas or rice (simple carbs) with this meal at this time in the day whenever possible. I always try remember to eat only enough to not be hungry and remind myself that I will be eating again in 3 hours. I make sure to not even get close to full!

3rd Meal of the day 3.5 hours later. Afternoon Snack...

An energy bar or two small ones. I usually get the 12 pack box of "Zone", "Cliff Bars" or something like that. Which ever is the best value for the money. They always take turns being on sale and it doesn't hurt to take a minute to compare prices and nutritional value. Certain fruits are good at this time also but do research on the nutritional value of anything that doesn't come with a label. I have found that oranges are good in small quantities but I used to eat them all day thinking I was being "healthy". I was wrong and just ingesting huge amounts of natural sugars. Yes I didn't have a cold because of vitamin C but I gained weight. I always try remember to eat only enough to not be hungry and remind myself that I will be eating again in 3 hours. I make sure to not even get close to full!

4th meal 3.5 hours later. Dinnertime.

This one is always tough as I am not the always in control of dinner. I try not to eat alot of simple carbs at this meal. I try to stick to Chicken, Fish, Pork, or Beef and the complex carbs (vegetables). Or I will do it vegetarian style that's usually pretty straightforward. My advice as always is to "EDUCATE" yourself and research in more than one place to compare your findings. These are things I am putting into my body. Do I REALLY understand their effects on me? I always try remember to eat only enough to not be hungry and remind myself that I will be eating again in 3 hours. I make sure to not even get close to full!

5th meal 3.5 hours later.

a glass of milk and a "healthier" style cookie or even health bar of some sort. I will not go to bed hungry if I can help it and I will certainly not go to bed full.

Daily workout.

Currently I do 8 min abs and 80 pushups about 5 times a week. I started with 8 min abs watching most of the time as opposed to doing. I also will most humbly say I started with 3 sets of 10 pushups, I am now up to 4 sets of 20. I push myself but not to the point of hurting myself. I do not have my gym membership anymore otherwise I would do something a little more involved. I used to run about 2 miles twice a week and will probably start that up again hopefully soon. Let me also say I hate running and so do my shins.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I do bend the rules at times but I stay "AWARE" and refuse to lie to myself when I know better. It means I will have to try harder later if I wreck it now. Think about it.

It's all about the metabolism and getting it going. You can restart and speed up your metabolism. Do some research and see for yourself. Start here hehe.

A few websites I found useful...

IMO however, I don't think you need to buy anything except the right foods to accomplish the goals you have set for yourself.

Educate the self so that you can not lie to the self.
