    Default America:Bowling for Columbine???

    hi.
I'm an American and i want you to give it to us ugly. STRAIGHT. Because I am convinced that this is a country living in fear and consequently driven to consume.

I believe our economy is based on hype.
Here are some interesting figures that I am quoting from the said movie:

Gun-Related Murders in Toronto Canada in 2002: 0
Number of Guns in Canada; 7,000,000 per 10,000,000.
Number of Gun-Related Deaths in The United States: 11,300

Why is this? I think it's the hype. The media telling us we all have something to be afraid of, so America buys into it. Preparing for killer bee attacks that never happen. For the stupid y2k nug that cost consumers thousands but oOps never happened. Of course then it's this message: We are under attack, always. There is always a THREAT if not bees than y2k bugs. Al Queda. Saddam.
Prepare yourselves. Go out and buy some shit. There's ammo at K-mart......

Did I offend anybody? i'm sorry if i did. I just wonder what the international community REALLY thinks of America.

PS-On the day of the Columbine murders, more bombs were dropped on Kosovo by US Armed Forces than on any other day of the conflict. Who are the real enemies??

Are we somehow being conditioned? Pardon the weird ideas. Watch the movie. It's a pretty good one.

Michael Moore really went over the top with that documentary, but with respect to the news media in this country, he's right on the mark. Just think of how badly that cycle of fear and consumption permeates our advertising culture. Ever since seeing BFC, I can't stand watching the news anymore. They have the gall to even make something as innocuous as the weather report sound scary.

Since we're on the subject, there's a question that I'm begging to ask our Canadian contingent...

    Great post JDS......

Obviously i can't comment on the state of america too much but i do read and i have seen a good few docu's on the issues you bring up. I saw a documentery about this last month and i couldn't believe that they sold armed weapons in K-mart WTF!

Gun crime in the UK is on the up and up is not even a joke.... we only used to hear about this shit happening in America but now when i hear someone has been killed or shot more or less on my door step.... im like what again?

And as for the American goverment and media their lies and tricks, well i'm sure you know how the world feels about that and i don't mean any offence either because we are just as bad and back you guys always.

JDS i haven't seen the movie but i'll look out for it.

    Seraya.

I just hope more people speak up against it so it's more clear what is REALLY going on. We can't get TOO comfortable in the dark.

I watch an international news channel called LINK-it's on satellite. This country really needs to get it's priorities straight. I am not unpatriotic. Simply disappointed because what this country is all about is being ignored for the sake of profit. The difference in news coverage is staggering.

I agree that the supposed "free press" in America is far from free and far from objective. For example, since Seraya is from the UK, she can tell you that the British media owned by Rupert Murdoch are reporting the hell out of John Kerry's "blonde bombshell girlfriend" scandal. On the other hand the American media also owned by the same Rupert Murdoch hardly mentioned it.

As far as cultivating fear goes, sensational stories striking fear in the hearts of the audience get ratings, sells movie tickets etc. thus the media has a vested interest. Fearful citizens also play right into the hands of those politicians who might wish to exercise ironhanded control - after all Adolf Hitler rose to power based in large measure on the fears of post-WW1 Germans, and remained in control for 12 years based on inspiring absolute fear in millions of Europeans.

As far as gun related crimes and violence goes, for the most part this is directly or indirectly the result of an organized criminal element. This is also primarily a big city phenomena (where ordinary people don't know or watch out for, or help each other), and it's also inversely related to gun control (ordinary people who are not allowed to have guns make easy targets). Like much of Canada, here in upstate NY I also live in a town where people do not lock their doors, but there is hardly any crime and practically no violent crime. The reason - everybody in town has guns, everybody in town knows their neighbors and watches out for them, and any "stranger" would be immediately noticed and questioned. From a would-be criminal's point of view, he would be much better off being apprehended by the NY state police than by the armed citizens of a small town!

I think that to get better rateings american journalists hype up a lot of things. I live in NNY near canada and I watch the CBC sometimes. My husband and I were just talking the other day that on the CBC there just isnt as much bad news as there is on american television. America also seems to think that we are so big and wonderful and all we do is good, and if anyone does something we don't like we say they are evil. but thats just my opinion, and what do I know, i don't agree with them, i must be wrong......

I live in the states and only lock my door at night time..believe it..I wasn't raised to be fearful. In fact the only thing I really do fear is being broke ..lol

JDS..thanks for starting this thread..I really loved this movie so much and enjoyed seeing it again on Showtime last night. Who in their right mind would ever give away guns in a BANK !! ???
I also like the point he made about the work to welfare system.

Toronto (allthough a great city) is far from perfect.
Look at this news site from TO for the crime reports,
Three murders over the weekend in a city of 2,5 million is hardly a spree. So 2 of them were stabbed by a burglar instead of shot.

As for Mr. Moore, he has a chronic habit of flat out lying about a lot of stuff, and when called on it calls it artistic license or satire. Personally I would not believe him if he told me I was on fire. His movies have been heavily staged and edited for effect--all to sell himself.

I agree with you Juliette....you've stated it perfectly, we are taught to be complacent, to live in fear. Thus, preventing civil disobedience by fat, complacent, tv watching, consumers.....bleh.....do it, live life, go out and don't be afraid!!!

Oh, and I like B4Colum....except for the end when he was mean to Charlton Heston....I'm a big fan of Heston's movies and he seems like a little of man, not some evil demagogue, the way that Moore was assaulting him........

Charlton Heston is one of the few celebrities who was an active supporter of 'conservative' causes as well as 'liberal' ones. The vast majority of celebrities, movie industry bigwigs etc are exclusive supporters of 'liberal' causes - and many are EXTREMELY vocal about it (Fonda, Streisand, Baldwin to name a few). Filmmaker Moore himself is a big time Green Party activist. Thus Heston was undoubtedly considered to be a 'traitor' of sorts by his profession and by his peers, which probably explains the point of view towards Heston portrayed in this film.

More 'supposedly' objective media reporting in the USA ? Guess who's just come on board as a 'talking head' news reporter at MSNBC. The wife of liberal San Francisco mayor Newsom !

Just curious if anyone has read AL Franken;'s "Liars, and the Lying Liars who Tell Them (A Fair and Balanced Look at the RIght)?" I've read through parts of it but been to busy to keep going, I thought it was hilarious what I have read so far.........As for Michael Moore, some people may say he's too liberal, however atleast he tells it as it is. ala Roger and Me, you saw him going to the people he grew up with, went to the excutives office and was refused, etc.........

I like Moore's movies, but I thought getting political at the Academy Awards during his acceptance speech showed poor taste.

It didn't pop up for me, Melonie, until I added an "L" to "htm" -

Interesting article. It has its own axe to grind, of course, but the critique is eye-opening.
