    Default Astrology for morons

come to learn I am a scorpio. November 14th, who would have thought it. I never paid any attention to this stuff but i met a few girls in chat last night that do. So what's a scorpio, what are the rest of the signs (I know the names, if not what months they land on). I'm supposed to be demnding, as a scorpio, so i DEMAND an answer (hey, i'm playing the part).

What are the rest of the signs supposed to be? Can anyone give me an astrology for dummies lesson?

(And think, i just might be able to use this to get women.... )

And, hey, i'm a pretty charming fellow! The chick I get just might be you! Or maybe not.....

Scorpio (The Scorpion) October 23-November 21

    Element: Water

    Quality: Fixed

    Keywords: Regeneration, Transformation.

    Planetary Rulers: Mars and Pluto.

Rules: Sexual Organs, Rectum, and Reproductive System; Natural ruler of the eighth house.

Note the sharp point at the tip of the glyph that represents this sign. Symbolically, it's the scopion's stinger, which characterizes the biting sarcasm often associated with Scorpios. These people are intense, passionate, and strong-willed. They often impose their will on others. In less aware people, they can manifest as cruelty, sadism, and enmity; in the more evolved Scorpio, this characteristic transforms lives for the better.

Like Aries, they aren't afraid of anything. But they have an endurance that Aries lacks and it enables them to plow ahead and overcome whatever opposition they encounter. Scorpios don't know the meaning of indifference. They tend to live in black and white worlds, dealing with either/or issues. They either approve or don't approve, agree or disagree. You're either a friend or an enemy; there are no shades of gray. Once you've gained their trust, you've won their loyalty forever, unless you hurt them or someone they love. Then they can become vindictive and may attempt to get even.

Scorpios possess an innate curiosity and suspicion of easy answers that compels them to probe deeply into whatever interests them. They dig out concealed facts and seek the meaning behind them. Most Scorpios are exceptionally intuitive, even if they don't consciously acknowledge it. The more highly evolved people in this sign are often psychic, with rich inner lives and passionate involvement in metaphysics.

Scorpios are excellent workers, industrious and relentless. They excel at anything associated with the eighth house--trusts and inheritances, mortuaries, psychological counselors, the occult.

The Scorpio woman smolders with sexuality. This is a woman who turns heads on the street, who walks into a room filled with strangers and instantly grabs attention through nothing more than the power of her presence. If you seek to win a Scorpio woman's heart, you'd better be up front and honest right from the beginning. If she ever catches you in a lie or if you hurt her, she'll cut you off cold. She's a passionate lover and can be jealous and possessive. You won't ever figure out what she's thinking or feeling just by the expression on her face, unless she's angry and then watch out. Her rage takes many forms--an explosion, sarcasm that bites to the bone, or a piercing look that makes you shrivel inside. If her intuition is developed, it borders on clairvoyance. This inner sense often shines forth in a Scorpio woman's striking eyes. As a mother, the Scorpio woman is devoted, loving, and fiercely protective. She strives to create a comfortable and loving home for her kids that is also a refuge from the outside world.

Like the female of the sign, The Scorpio man is intense, passionate, and very private. There is always something compelling about a Scorpio man--his eyes, the way he dresses, or the enigma of his presence. He isn't just a flirt. He often comes on like a locomotive with sexual energy radiating so powerfully that he's difficult to ignore even if you aren't attracted to him. The Scorpio man often has a marvelous talent of some kind that he pursues passionately, but which may not figure into his income. In other words, this talent is his avocation--music, art, writing, acting, astrology, Tarot cards. Or he may pour his considerable talent into nurturing his own children. Many Scorpio men (and women) enjoy sports. They have a distinct preference for more violent sports like football and hunting. His choice of sports is sometimes a reflection of his personaly struggle with emotional extremes.

From infancy, Scorpio children are usually distinctive in some way. They form their opinions early, based on what they experience and observe. The intensity and depth of their emotions may result in outbursts of temper when they don't get their way or terrible outbursts of crying when their feelings are hurt. As the parent of a Scorpio child, there are times when you're completely puzzled about your child's behavior. Instead of trying to guess what's wrong, just be forthright and ask. Your child's response may astonish you. Scorpio children flourish in an environment that is rich with variety, but they definitely need their own space and sanctuary.

(More continued in next post.. lol)

    Compatibility

Scorpio is usually comfortable with Taurus, because the signs are polar opposites and balance each other. The Water of Scorpio and the Earth of Taurus mix well. However, both signs are fixed, which means in a disagreement neither will give in to the other. Scorpios can be compatible with other Scorpios as long as each person understands the other's intensity and passions. Pisces and Cancer, the other two Water signs, may be too weak for Scorpio's intensity, unless a comparison of natal charts indicates otherwise.

    Romance

You don't know the meaning of the word intensity unless you've been involved with a Scorpio. No other signs brings such raw power to romance. The rawness probably isn't something you understand or even like very much, but there's no question that it's intricately woven through the fabric of your relationship. The odd part is that you're never quite sure how the intensity is going to manifest; jealousy, fury, endless questions, or unbridled passion. Sometimes, the intensity doesn't have anything to do with the relationship, but with the personal dramas in the Scorpio's life. So don't try to figure it out. If you're in for the long haul, then accept your Scorpio the way he or she is. If you're not in for the long haul, then hit the road.

    Work

They make excellent actors, detectives, spies, even teachers. There's just no telling where all that rawness of perception can take a Scorpio.

    Finances

Scorpios are masters at using other people's money to build their own fortunes. This is as true of a Mafia Don as it is of a Wall Street entrepreneur. Scorpio attaches no moral judgment to it; this is simply how things are. In return, Scorpios can be extravagantly generous in charity work or anonymous donations to worthy causes. Your Scorpio may even rewrite the last act of your rejected screenplay and get it to sell big time.

    Physical Scorpio

All Scorpios seem to share the same compelling, intense eyes. Regardless of body height or size, they generate a powerful sense of presence and usually have low, husky voices. Due to the unusual will power inherent in the sign, Scorpios often work to the point of exhaustion. Any illness usually has a strong emotional component.

    Spirituality

Some Scorpios take to organized religion like a duck to water. They like the ritual and the sense of belonging. Others, however, delve into unorthodox belief systems seeking spiritual answers. Whatever form spirituality takes for a Scorpio, he or she brings passion and sincerity to the search.

It gets a lot more detailed than that. Your Sun sign is just the tip of the iceberg. For example, a Virgo with a Scorpio Ascendant often still has the compelling, intense eyes. A Capricorn with Venus in the sign of Scorpio will likely still have the sexual drive and jealousies; this would be amplified if the person were a Cancer instead of Capricorn (Cancer being another water sign and already prone to jealousy and emotionally withdrawing).

Case in point: I'm a Cancer. Cancer avoids confrontation and reacts mostly by ignoring or emotionally withdrawing from a problem. However, I take confrontation head on, which is totally not a Cancer trait but rather a result of my Moon in Aries. The two combined presents a person who blows her top Vesuvius style and then retreats to bear a grudge for life.

    Like I said, very complicated.

Exactly, it's extremely complicated. If I were to type out all the information I know about each sign here, I'm sure I wouldn't have enough room. That's just a basic description.

Just for kicks and giggles, we should do some natal charts here. Make a game of it, maybe. Post the reading for a chart once a day and the rest of the thread be devoted to members guessing who it is.

A natal chart is your actual horoscope, a picture of the sky at the minute of your birth, which is then translated. It is far and away more accurate than the "horoscopes" you read in the daily newspaper. Incidentally, a progressed natal chart works exactly the same as those horoscopes you read in the paper; the only difference is that a progressed chart is tailored to you as an individual (only someone born in the same latitude and longitude within four minutes of your birth will have the same chart- this is known as an astrological twin) and is thus more accurate.

For a natal chart, an astrologer needs your year, month and date of birth, as well as the time (down to the minute, preferably), latitude and longitude of the place you were born, and whether Daylight Savings was in effect.

Rhi, I cheat. Software does the math for me and spits out the placements. I then draw the chart, input the computer's info and read it from there. Saves me days' worth of work.

That's pretty neat. I'm just so used to doing everything by hand, and need to research the information myself. Cool idea though.

I'm lazy and can't stand the thought of spending three days slaving over a hot ephemeris. Best $80 I ever spent. I still do it occasionally by hand, just so I don't lose my touch, but it's so booooooring.

Of course, for $300 there's a program that even does the interpretation. Now THAT'S cheating.

Great software at a good price. I can vouch for their Horoscope Interpreter & Astrology for Lovers (I should warn you first, their compatability bars are gimicky and seem to use some weird algorithm to determine its ratings - read the data it spits out instead, while long, it is eye opening).

They both produce VOLUMES of info to read but they have both been dead on for everyone I've ran them on.

    And they both do charts.
We all imagine ourselves the agents of our destiny, capable of determining our own fate. But have we truly any choice in when we rise, or when we fall, or does a force larger than ourselves bid us our direction. Is it evolution that takes us by the hand, does Science point our way, or is it God who intervenes keeping us safe.

So much struggle for meaning, for purpose. And in the end, we find it only in each other. Our shared experience of the fantastic. And the mundane. The simple human need to find a kindred, to connect. And to know in our hearts... that we are not alone.

I am curious as to the logic of why so many people believe in astrology. So what causes ones sign to affect thier personality? The gravitational pull of the moon and stars on their brain cells at birth? If thats it then why would our personalities not change as the postions of the planets do? :

Actually, it does. I have notes taken over the last seven years that I've been on the internet. Internet message boards are 78% more likely to have a huge fight when Moon is in Aries than any other sign.

Haven't you ever had those weeks when you had no patience whatsoever and nothing ever seemed to go your way? Have you ever uncharacteristically wanted nothing more than to sit in your house like a bird in it's nest, cooking, cleaning and never going out to party?

In fact, most astrologers anticipate their rough patches, times of great good fortune and the best days for romance by progressing their chart, and then plan accordingly.

As an aside, sociologists have confirmed that the personality undergoes the most drastic changes from between the ages of 21-27.

    I'll give my personal opinion...

First of all, I would consider myself a skeptical person. I have been raised to use scientific methods in my daily life and work. I question everything including myself and my beliefs requiring facts, consistency, and results.

That said astrology has proven itself to me. While the predicting aspect of astrology is far from perfect, I have confidence in the personallity part of it. It is important to realize that astrologists interpret influences and how they combine within a person, just as geologists, historians, and doctors interpret their findings. Some are more accurate than others. I also doubt how useful the foretelling aspect is, sure you can see what feelings you may encounter or what you inclinations will be on a given day, but life is about living it...not planning it.

Why does it work? We have no clue what role we play in the scheme of things beyond our planet. There is still a WHOLE lot to study, but we are a product of our galaxy (I use to have a geology professor who liked to remind us we were made of star dust). Life seems to develop to fit its environment, if there is a way to survive, it will adapt. We are custom for Earth, whether desiged for it or evolved for it. But does that extend further? Are we designed for our Galaxy? Our sun? Further? I'm inclined to think so.

That said, they've all had an influence on our development. We tend to be day creatures, we need the Sun (Vitamin D), women's cycles are structured around the moon cycle, etc. It's strange that we easily how animals behavior is structured around our planets position to the moon, sun, and other planets (grunion runs, lung fish and bear hibernation, bird migration, etc), but we deny their influence on us. Altitude, latitude, chemicals, and so forth at our location of gestation and birth affect humans - but not the planets around us?

I think it's our need to feel free that inclines us reject those ideas. "How could I not be in control of me and my choices?" I bet ants feel the same way. I bet they believe they have free will, they just choose to protect the queen, to wake up everyday, organize into ant society and operate in their role to help the colony operate as a single force (repeat daily). Sure they make make that "choice" daily, but they are designed to make that choice.

So back to the question - how does it work? I'm not sure if it is the electromagnetic or gravitational fields of the planets, radiation from them, a combination of those influences or something else we are yet to measure. But I believe that they influence our brain development and the chemicals that shape & operate our brain. Perhaps they focus energies or block them during development. Some believe that it only occurs at the moment when a baby becomes independent, no longer dependent on its mother. I have no idea what happens at that point and am more inclined to believe the influences happen during development, but we must all admit - birth is an amazing moment.

I am not saying astrology is the end all be all. There are other influences in life too. I also do not claim astrology to be 100% accurate - it is an observational, interpreted science (bring on the flames baby ) like most others. There is room for improvement and fine tuning.

Also, do not undercut astrology to simply 12 signs, as pointed out by other posters, astrology is complex - allowing for nearly an infinite number of personallities. Whether we evolved to it or it was created by a God or Gods, I believe astology is the means to personalities.

    Yes!

I believe in the astrological charts as well. Lillith even described it accurately! I am a Virgo with Scorpio rising and an Aries moon. By all definitions, I am a level headed psycho.

The twelve sun signs don't really paint any kind of story. Not by themselves unless your ascendant and moon signs are also your sun sign. Done in detail and including your time and place of birth, it's MAD accurate.
