OMG I woke up last friday the exact same way - I went to the dentist this week and they told me I grind my teeth in my sleep - they saw wear on some of my other teeth from the grinding and clenching too they said, now that I'm aware of it, I notice myself grinding and clenching more ofter (long drives, reading, sitting in front of the computer - yes I'm doing it as I type this).
My dentist told me that if you are grinding your teeth in your sleep it is possible to put 10 to 20 times the amount of pressure you usually do on your teeth. Because you're sleeping you don't realize you're doing it and bam....
anyways, I'm getting some kind of neato (sarcasm) retainer I have to sleep with now.

oooohhhh, Malibu!! That sucks, are you ok? I hope you have dental! Was it a front tooth? Take care, get well!
I'm fine NikkieD, thanks for asking. I chipped a premolar, it feels very jagged against my tongue. I tried to look at it in the mirror (the way dentists' do) but I can't see the damage very well.
It's really upsetting because I take pride in my teeth (I hold the record for the best teeth in my family - no fillings, ops, braces, nuthin'. Ah well, can't stay perfect forever, eh?

That happened to me once to, it was jagged against my tongua and would actually cut it and make my tongue swell a little. It was quite retarded really! Good Luck with it! I'm sure that your teeth are still close to the best in your fam, I know that mine are.
Hey girl
I know exactly where you are coming from. I have always prided myself on my teeth too, and last year (soon after a visit to the dentist to add insult to injury) a molar collapsed! :'(
I too suffer grinding at night, and had JUST bought a retainer (they are fucking expensive too!)
Did you save or ever find the piece that came off? They can still do excellent resorative work without the lost part anyway.
I needed to get root canal surgery as well as my break exposed the nerve. It was horrible, uncomfortable and painful. And VERY expensive. I feel for ya!
