edited to add this...
This is a great line "How much fun is (it) grinding on all these guys' laps all day long? (Exotic dancers) must certainly be doing it for the money," she says."
Well no SHIT honey! NO!!!! I grind on guys all day just cause I love it.![]()

Hehe, I am ALL of these things....do you know how many coke heads I know that have NEVER stripped AND finished law school AND are currently practicing, protecting your rights and your children....most of them are MEN!!!!The brainy babe: By now, you've heard the myth of the sexy student who dances for fun and titillation and manages to pay for law school at the same time.
But in reality, after talking with student strippers around the GTA, it appears few students who begin stripping to pay for tuition are able to keep from becoming addicted to the underworld lifestyle.

There is nothing wrong with women who successfully pursue a permanent career in dancing. However, assuming that a majority of dancers are lazy and mindless is just another annoying stereotype about a career that most people will never understand.

The reverse profile would be of a woman who is now $35,000, $60,000 or $100,000 in debt funding her degree on her own. Or one who never got to go to college because it was too expensive!
If a person didn't have good study habits in high school, it's harder for them when they get into college. Whether or not they strip doesn't change that. Only hard work does.
I suppose this article could be a vague kind of warning not to forget your dreams, but it certainly isn't a LEGITIMATE profile of exotic dancing. Just building on the same-old stripper stereotype. Can we hear something new please?

YAWN!!!!! I am so sick of hearing the same boring old stereo-types about dancers. Maybe someday the media will get a clue. I
Actually, I think that that article highlighted a lot of truths.
Sure, it displays a strereotype (which can be true and is a sad case when it happens) but another successful case (which was open minded and is also true).
After all, there is a woman there who has highlighted what bad things can happen in a non biased way. Even though I don't like the fact that we hear the 'down sides' of stripping in articles, it's the bias that I am ultimately against. They are not overall claiming that it is a nasty career, more that is is a job that could lead you on the wrong tracks, especially if you are weak and a sucker for bigtime cash. Now, noone can deny this. I am a student and I can see exactly where she is coming from and how it can lead people astray. I even had girls at my club tell me I'm "lucky to be educated" because they aren't (i.e. can't see past the lifestyle to get their lazy asses (back) into school and secure their future before it all ends) or tell me to give it up as I could earn more money as a full time dancer. And I'm sure some of you know girls who delay their goals or leave other things because of stripping also. I do.
But as with many jobs, people are in it for the money! Sure, it can be a great job, but if it were paid like many 'normal jobs', half of y'all would leave. I probably would. I love stripping but at the end of the day, the crap I have to put up with sometimes is not worth the average pay. So yes, money is a big factor for a lot of people. But it wouldn't have hurt if they would add in more detail that it can also be a very fun job and an excellent confidence booster. It was mentioned, but maybe not enough.
Subtely (sp.?) "Dakota" has said that stripping is a great occupation. It allows you financial freedom to do what you want with your life. It can be bad, yes, for drugs, but it can also be excellent for long term plans and careers. This is why I am stripping. And Sara made a good point, to let you not forget your dreams.
I liked the article because it also reminded me just how quickly I could lose my dancing job. That girl hurting her leg made me realise that I'm lucky to be educated and it's something to fall back on. So I try to stay where I am.
I know it opened up with the usual "stripping brought me down" stereotype, but it does exist. I just don't like it when people allow this situation to marr the view of the dancing world as a whole. So we should fight against this while we can by out attitudes and actions to help make some sort of change in minds.
OK, I'm sure I've missed chunks out but I just woke up and I was late getting to bed. Gonna freshen up and then do my Tae Bo. Laters peeps.

Yes i agree with malibu. I am a student now and have a 4.0 Gpa. I am paying for school, my car and basic living expenses on my own and all of this is due to dancing. Yes sometimes i hate my job (on nights when guys are rude and grabby, no body is buying dances or i'm just kinda board) but the majority of days are awsome( i get to dress up sexy, get to dance to music all night listen to guys tell me how beautiful i am and what a great body i have) It is great! I love feeling sexy and acting sexy and it is awsome i get paid for it. That said i realise i can not have this forever. Unfourtantly people get older and their looks and energy change. THis makes me appreciate the job so much more.
It is amazing to me how many girls at my club do not go to school or save money. They just think the money is never ending. It is really sad in a way. I know they love the job just like me but they do not realise that there will come a time when they are not the cute 21 year old that gets dances effortlessly anymore. If they do not want to go to school then they should save to open their own buisnness or invest in stock. Anything to keep the doors open for themselves. Dancing does offer alot of oppurtinites for a fun lifestyle but you can not put all of your eggs in one basket! If i am done with school and I still have the looks to make good money dancing you bet i will continue but i want to have the oppurtinity if i am just not cutting it anymore to be able to bow out gracefully with a new carrer and not be stuck giving extras to pay rent.![]()
I think it's interesting that the writer starts the article by calling the student stripper a "myth" then goes on to give several examples of real student strippers.
You get what you put up with
The article mentioned that the hours are flexible, which is good for students, but didn't explicitly mention the fact that it's actually an ideal job for students. I could work 20 hours a week and make $140, or I could work 5 hours and make an average of $200. Fifteen extra hours of study time is a big deal. Instead of distracting from my studies as the article proposes, it actually gives me more time to study.
