first of all, dont fall for a scam. if they ask you for money up front before getting you any work, its a scam. you don't need classes, you don't have to go with thier photographer for you comp cards and whatnot, etc.
heres a place to start:

dont expect to immeadaty start getting paid offers to pose for catalogs. You have to build a portfolio first. many photographers will offer TFP. That lets you both build your portfolio.
Before you go on a shoot make sure to ask LOTS of questions. Always ask if you can bring a friend. Any respectable/responsible photographer will say "of course". If he says no, beware. Take a friend who will not have a problem with you modeling. Sometimes photographers will touch you to pose you. If your friend will freak out about that, bring a diffrent friend. Also make sure at least one other person knows where you are and all the info you have on the photographer. Including what time the shoot begins and ends. Its a good idea that once you get there to ask for his id when he asks for yours and call your at home friend, or even your home awnswering maching and leave his full name, age, and DL number.
You may also want to consiter doing more then just fashion. You could also do swimsuit, lingere, glamour, hair or other body parts (teeth, hands, etc), editorial, sports, artistic. there are many areas, and the more you are open to the more offers you will get. Just don't do anything you are uncomfortable with.
If you need to know anything else just PM me...

Hi Melissa,
I looked to see where you are located - close to NY - lots of top agencies there and lots of opportunities to do editorial work. Many of the top agencies have open call days. Check out their websites to find out and go in. If you're looking at fashion, there are usually height requirements. Check out this link of a NY modeling agency - you'll find examples of their different modeling 'categories' and what the requirements are depending on what kind of work you want to do:
