Default Ha ha - I make more money than you do!

Is anyone else annoyed when someone brings up the phrase "Yea, well, I make more money than you do" as if that is some means of validation or verification of "betterness" over someone else?

Someone recently whipped the statement out over other girls who squall over their boyfriends being in strip clubs.

Serious drug dealers make more money than the average person does. Does that validate what they do as right?

I bet you're answering "Hell no!" So obviously simply because someone makes a bunch of money doing something doesn't mean they are better than another person, or have a higher moral compass than another.

I know this one dancer, and I was at her club speaking to her (other stuff) when another came up. Somehow the conversation turned to something that I disagreed with her on. She whips out the "well, I make more money than you do chump" card on me, and I just shook my head and smiled as she walked away.

Anyone who knows me will readily admit I am past "doing well for myself" - I have the fully paid off BMW, the diamond rings and all that other shit that recently I have found doesn't really bring a lot of happiness in my life over. (But that is another subject.)

I guess I find it pathetically sad that someone tries to say their way is the right way simply because they have some change in their pockets.

It just makes the speaker sound petty and stupid to my ear. Maybe because I have "been there, done that" and now I realize how pathetic that little phrase is - and yes, I do feel foolish for speaking it now and then.

I mean that Paris Hilton girl is helluvah rich - does that mean she has any deep kind of insight on the world? From what I have seen, if anything, she is more clueless than the average person.

I guess the whole "Well, I make more money than you" is simply a pet peeve of mine. It takes a lot of fucking work to make good money. And I guess I just don't like to hear it being cheapened in that way.

This is exactly why John Kerry doesn't allow the fact that he's worth 750+ million dollars to be widely publicized !

Well, you do bring up and interesting topic. Money and material possessions DO NOT make people happy. If you are not happy without money, you will not be happy with money. People often spend their lives trying to attain material possessions and wealth thinking that these are the things they need to be happy. From my personal experiences I have found that the anticipation of something is often better than the real thing. The novelty of a new car wears off much quicker than the payments. It's like when I book a vacation, I love anticipation more than the actual vacation. I have also found that the most simple things in life are the things that make me the happiest. I love sitting out in the sun, and swimming in the warm summer ocean more than anyhting else in this world. I have also noticed that the people with expensive homes and cars seem to be the most miserable people in general. From what I see everyday, people like Jamaicans and Mexicans seem to be very happy and content with very little, and most wealthy people seem to never be happy no matter what they have. In this wolrd there will always be people with bigger, better, more material possessions than you. It is a losing battle trying to "keep up with the Jonses". The Jonses' are tired. My plan in life is to move to Kauai, have a small organic farm and live simply. I know I don't need an expensive car, expensive chlothes, jewelry, or big home to feel satisfied. I value my health, and I value my girlfriend and beautiful daughter. True, I may not have a million dollar home and a BMW, buy I am living pretty damn good. Money does not equal happiness. I would rather be broke and be on the beach with my kids, than rushing off to work every morning so I can pay for my big home and big cars. Just my 2 cents.

I'm with you Ryan. I only want to accumulate passive income so then I can devote that income to helping re-habilitate native species as well as be a foster home for pregnant cats and dogs that the local animal shelters will give to me.

So.. instead of the fancy car.. I just want a decent car. As for property.. yes I will need a hectare or at least a few acres so I can have the room for the animals. Big fancy house.. nah.. just a comfortable home.

As for clothes.. oh dear.. mermaidnz can back me up here when I say that I only spend on clothes for work. I don't rock up in the latest fashion when I arrive to work... just a shirt and shorts for me. I have no problems going to op shops for decent clothes....

It isn't so much that the person MAKES more money than you do.. I would then pull out something similiar to what monty said.. "So.. are you more satisfied with your life than me?".

Sometimes those who make the most money have the most debt .... hence they aren't necessarily smarter, wiser, etc.

It is all about happiness/satisfaction in life.. work and home/personal. That is priceless and sometimes the poorest person is the richest in that aspect.

Amen! I know all too well what it is like being poor. I never want to revisit that again. I don't want to be filthy rich. I'll settle for being debt free

did she say it as though she had more money than you do or implying that she does her job better than you, that being the reason why she makes more?

I dress low key - especially in places like that.

I am pretty sure she was thinking she was making more money than me, and so that made her better.

I would never want a customer to know I made more money than him (if I did) because I think it's a turn off. I'm not talking about the actual statement, which is naturally, but the general fact. Guys want to feel like the provider, and you are providing a fantasy. You want to remove yourself from the hustler/saleswoman position and put yourself in the doting admirer who will graciously accept his money, whatever amount.

Interesting philosophy, especially considering that you use your girlfriend's money to pay for stuff and you resent her for spending money to buy little luxuries.

    Ryan, that wasn;t 2 cents but $14.96.
The reason my question shuts them up is because they are obviously insecure if they have to brag.

One of my favorite quotes of all time.

"A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child."

    hahaha emily.

Actually, I have a much better retort and ironically, I started using it before my illustrious career as a stripper.

Anytime somebody says something I don't like (ok not anytime I do use this sparingly) I haughtily inform them, "Oh yeah? Well, I'm not wearing any panties"

That has always shut them up real quick!

Great one Sapph. For some reason, it may be because it's an election year, but I had a vision of George Bush saying that to John Kerry in a Presidential Debate.

Judging yourself or anyone else in terms of how much money you make is a sign of immaturity. The older you get the more you will realize how unimportant it is. It's the striving that's important, not the achieving. Character trumps wealth with anyone whose opinion counts.

I often use this response, too, although I'm sure I get totally different responses from you. Mostly very confused looks or people turning green as the bile rushes up from their stomachs. :o

Deogol, you have it exactly right. People are self interested ,not selfish. When my Dad died , he horded all the money he could for security. He wouldn't even pay for a good wholesome meal. It's like money had some magical powers over him. He'd thought he'd be better basicly by being next to it. People take money's influence above their own welfare. He wasn't selfish. He'd help anyone out that he could. He wouldn't think much about his own situation. He finally surcame to the abuse he subjected his body to.
He may not have known it but happiness comes from the family, friends and associates that you express it to.

I don't think that one will work for me Sapphire hehehehehhee

But I suppose I could try it.

I totally agree, money can't make you happy. It may make certain things go a little easier in life.....or make it a huge drag. But it can't solve your problems.

Me ....... I enjoy the company of a friend, watching a movie, or taking a ride on my Harley (cheapest thearapy in the world...hehehhehe)

Be happy in what you like......and life will be happy back.
I've heard that a good signiture sets you apart from everyone.
    Well......is this good enough???

I don' t think being wealthy makes anyone better than anyone else. In all fairness, however, her response may have been relevant to the conversation. If you were putting her down for being a dancer (or anything of that nature), than her response may have been validated. I don't like people who throw their income in others' faces, but I also don't like those who think dancers are beneath them because of the nature of our job.

being rich WILL make me very happy...more money means more options...

i'll go so far as to say that a lot of the so called materialistic people DON'T have a ton of money...and are very short sighted...

those that brag about there income are childish...and should be ignored.

'before you can help others meet their needs, you must first be able to meet your own'...mine

why do some people still have to fight to get the same opportunities that are given to others?

    reclusiveness...is a good thing.

    I absolutely agree with this!

But what is weird is I feel funny about people knowing how much I make. I was raised that you do NOT ask people what they make, discuss what you make, or ask someone what they paid for something. That is just tacky. Now all that said and done, I have discussed these things with someone when there is a REASON to discuss them, i.e., you are in the same profession or you are interested in the type of BMW your friend got and want to know if they got a deal on it.

BUT just for the pure fact of bragging or being nosy is just stupid. I get comments made to me by the people on my day job about how I make so much, blah, blah, blah, but I'm a hard worker and I bust my ass. I don't think I make enough at my day job though or I wouldn't consider stripping. I even had my boss's husband tell me I could have a house if I wasn't "driving a house" because I drive a Lexus. Who the hell is he to judge how I spend my money (and where can you buy a house for the price of a Lexus???) So yeah, I hate when people comment on shit like that like it makes them special.
