    Default hair extenisons :)

    Hey all,

I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place for my q, and I’m not a dancer just yet (I’m hoping to be, on the diet and working out to get confidence and all that!) but here goes . . . . I have really terrible, over-dyed frazzled hair (dark brown now so as to hide my roots) which I'm desperately trying to grow out (tugging doesn't seem to work ). It's shoulder length but thin and layered out; short of a LOT of time styling it it looks bloody awful, basically. I often wrap a weft of hair the same colour as my own round a ponytail but I keep hearing that guys prefer long loose hair. I can’t afford proper extensions but what I was thinking of doing was braiding fake hair onto my own for about two or three inches from the top, leaving the rest loose (if you know what I mean), and going for an ‘exotic’ look . . . . maybe like an Arabian or Egyptian princess style (I’m white see, so I’m not sure if I can pull it off, I have dark hair but pale skin which I can fake tan but blue eyes). Does anyone think this sounds like a good alternative to scary hair? I’m desperate to have long hair for dancing but I don’t want to look like I’m trying to be something I’m not. I was also wondering if I could get away with the ponytail extension thing too. Sorry to bombard you like this but I’m in a bit of a dilemma and I don’t know anyone who dances!

    ta in advance luvvies

The most important thing is that you are happy with your hair, you will then project confidence, which will help you more than any particular hairstyle will.
White girls can wear braided extensions - it can be a good way to grow out your hair, but if your hair is really damaged, the stress of braiding and having the additional weight on already fragile hair may be too much, and you can experience breakage. If the hair is that bad already though, it's just going to need to be cut off anyway.
If you want to leave the extensions loose, you're going to need microbraids to attach the hair - this can be super expensive depending on who does it - mine took 18 hours when I had them done! Regular braids can be done in 1/4 of the time.
I actually just had braided extensions done a couple days ago - went from 3-4" long hair to hair down to my butt - too trippy! Beware though, for the first while they make your scalp itch like mad...I'm going nuts here today, LOL!

I'm white and a few years ago I got braided extensions- but the place did a horrible job, they were messy and uneven- after 8 hours of getting them done (and it hurt) I ended up going home and taking them all out. So just make sure you do it w/ someone who has worked w/ caucasian hair and who will do a nice job. Other than that though- braided extensions could look REALLY nice. You dont even have to go for an "exotic theme"- alot of caucasians get braided extensions these days. I dont think anyone will give you a hard time "being something you're not"- people should be more open minded... I hope.

I think braids look great on anyone. I'd say if you definetely need to find a person who is good though because some people just cant do them well. I've seen it. (The braids have all these little hairs sticking out, etc)
Actually a white girl I know did her hair by a black girl who works in a salon where the majority of customers are black females and she did her hair GREAT. She said that it was cheaper, and better than the time she did it in a salon. Sometimes it just pays to do the homework.
What about half wigs? The type that goes in the middle of your head? Those are great too.

I have 5 tracks braided into my own hair. I love them!!! I started out with shoulder length hair and BAM!! (my hair is to the middle of my back) just like that. Taking care of them is pretty easy, you just have to be careful of the braids.

A quick alternative to braids is bonding glue. Just part your hair, and glue the track. It's temporary and fairly easy to take out.

Bonding glue is similar (almost exactly the same) as eyelash adhesive...a sort of rubber latex. I'm also a fan of bonded hair extensions, as a quick way to add length/fullness and also color.

Does it have to be professionally done?

i use the part-braid style 2-3 inches from the root. It's great for getting noticed!

I'd like to hear more about the bonding glue. I've read about people glueing in their own extensions. Where can I find bonding glue and directions for application?

The hair bonding is VERY easy to apply and can be done by yourself..... I've done my whole head myself a couple of times ( you can have a hole head, half head of just a couple of tracks for colour, fullness or length.

It is VERY natural looking, WAAAY more natural looking than weave because its lays down super flat on your scalp so there is no bulk.... and as long as your hair i covering the top ( the track ) of the on the hair weave/extension you wont see where it is attached.... trust me as long as your using human hair which matches your own natural hair colour and texture noone will be able to tell! It looks great for short styles.

Be aware though doing this too much can stress/break the hair esp afro hair.

You can purchase hair bonding glue from any afro hair supply store....

The hair bonding can last up to a month, more even but i would recommend no more than 2 weeks... Removing it is simple. You can either wash it out or wet you hair or buy a hair glue remover which is best..... what ever you do, DO NOT pull it out cos that will rip your hair.

You can make your own wig ( stocking cap-weave ) using a stocking or cutting a pair of tights, hair weave and bonding glue.... Many Jamaican girls i know do this and they look GOOD!
