    Default Birth Control

Ok.... I'm seriously thinking about the shot... I've been on the pill, I hate it, I went from a light 2 day cycle to a 7 day cycle, & I was more moody and angry.... Plus taking a pill everyday at the same time is just annoying!!! So I want to go on the shot.... is anyone else on it??? I heard about some crazy side effects, I don't care about the weight gain (the pill didn't make me gain bad weight, my boobs got bigger and I finally have hips... ) but the shots side effects scared me a little (especially the side effect of hair lose or hair gain!?!?!) Well anyway..... if anyone is on the shot let me know what I can expect..... Thanx!

I would strongly advise against getting the shot. Many women out there don't know about this and many doctor's wont say anything about it either because of profit....but this is a very very dangerous form of birth control. I was on it for 3 year only to have developed cervical cancerous cells (that thank God were caught on time and treated) The shot is dangerous because it stops your body from ovulating,(getting your period) which puts your body in a state of menopause which is extremely dangerous for any woman who is not of menopausal age or post menopause. And in turn when you stop getting your period...you put on weight , and get other serious hormonal problems...some women can't get their periods back once coming off this birth control which requires extra treatment. And lastly i was told that after 3 years of using this doctors still do not know about the long term effect...please consider this and pass on to any other wome you know considering this type of birth control.

Very true Maya. Birth control has the power to help you with certain problems while causing others. Some very serious, i,e. blood clots, cancer etc.

What every women needs to do is educate educate. Doctors prescribe, we have to be responsible for learning what the drugs may do.

I can't take any form of BC, because i have a heart condition, so i am with spermicide and condoms when i have sex.

Birth control will help one women have regular normal bleeding every month, while the next women may not be able to stop bleeding, same pill or same shot, patch, whatever.

So many different methods, and hidden dangers. That's why we must ask many questions, doctor (wont know too much) the pharmacy, they will know alot more, and internet, along with reading books.

    Good luck,

    Pamela

i personally loved the shot and recommend it to anyone seeking longterm birth control. that said, fewer women have my positive experiences with it than the unpleasant ones (extra bleeding, mood swings, etc.), so that should be kept in mind.

they've gotten the pill into patch form, where you apply one weekly. not sure how that would cover up while dancing, but it's supposed to work pretty well, though it's very new.

if you've already had kids, the iud is pretty bulletproof for birth control.

and if you're willing to intimately learn your cycles, the rhythm method is pretty good (this also assumes a cooperative partner and monogamy).

other than that, condoms work great so long as you or the guy is willing to put up with the expense.

    The Ring!!!!

If the pill doesnt give you any hormonal problems, try the ring. (NuvaRing) It uses the same exact hormones as the pill, but its just a little plastic flexy ring that you insert kind if like a tampon... you leave it there for 3 weeks, and dont have to think about it at all... and then take it out for a week and have your period. You use a new ring each month, but the price for me was exactly the same as the pill. Also, most guys dont feel it when they're in you. For those who do, you can take it out for up to 2 hours at a time... it's completely thoughtless yet effective! I've used it for over a year now! PM me with any questions!

i too would not recomend the shot to anyone... i first got the shot in october 0f 2002 thinking that it would help to minimize me period and was i wrong ...i bled for the entire three months before it was time for my next shot when it was time for my next shot i decided that i was not gonna continue with it i ended up bleeding for another three months straight then eventually my period stopped and for a whole month i had no period the i started having my period every other month and when i had it it would last for the entire month.. for a whole year it was this way....it is now that my period seem to be going back to its normal cycle...if you had side effects from the pill then expect to have side effects from the shot

I hated the shot. Wouldn't stop bleeding.

The ring is ok. Except it kept coming out and playing cock ring toss in bed isn't too sexy.

I'm gonna go back with the IUD.

Almost everyone I've ever known who got the shot hated it and gained a ton of weight that they had never gained from BC pills. What always scared the hell out of me was the thought of having to deal with 3 months of side effects if I had problems with it.

    NUVA RING!!!! (nuvaring.com)

I love it! I have been useing it only a few months now and its great. I have used in the past: condoms, spermicide , the patch, and now this wonderfull little ring. It has a lower amount of hormones because its so close to the overies. Otherwize its very similar to the patch or the pill. Way more conveint though. I have to remember it twice a month! once to put it in, once to take it out. My husband and I can not feel it during sex. It dosnt show when I dance like the patch, it dosn't itch like the patch (I think I had a very slight reaction to the adhesive), its not messy like spermicide (which I think my husband had a slight reaction to), or just sucky like condoms (although condoms are good if you are not in a monogams relationship).

Shot is terrible. I took it once and felt totally knocked off balance and psycho. My boobs got huge and swollen, I had a three week period, and I gained 10 pounds. Condoms and spermicide are your BEST bet for pregnancy and disease prevention.

I was on the shot for about 4 years and never had a problem, not once. I didn't have my period for all those years, and when I got off the shot, i got my period back in a few months. Didn't gain any weight either, or had any mood swings. I realy like it. But now I am thinkin twice about going back on it after some of the posts I read above, like about cancer. Maybe sticking with condoms would be best. I wonder how often any1 get's pregnant with those.

    Default Re:Birth Control

I've had experience with most forms of birth control due to various "female problems" that my doctors attempted to fix by screwing around with my hormones.

As for Depo, it's a 50/50 chance. I wouldn't stop bleeding and got the "paranoia" side effect. Started getting panic attacks and the whole bit. On the other hand, my mom started it the same time as me, has used it for several years, and has never had a problem. One suggestion I got from doctors is maybe to try the progesterone only birth control pills first, and if you're okay with those, then use the Depo. That would be safer because you could stop taking the pills at any time vs. the several months of Depo.

NuvaRing - the first two months I was totally sold. I thought it was the most wonderful thing ever invented. Then, in the third month I got vaginitis. By the fourth, I had CONSTANT vaginitis and urinary tract infections and ended up in the hospital I was cramping so bad. So, once again, a 50/50. I think NuvaRing might be okay for occasional use, but I wouldn't try to use it long term. I also hear that things like cervical caps and diaphragms can cause the same kind of problems, so I don't think I'll ever try those either.

Birth control pills & Seasonale - Not so bad. There's actually a 4 hour window in which to take the pills. I actually lose weight when I'm on them, and my skin looks GREAT! The only thing is finding one that's best for you. I had to try like four kinds before I found one I liked. I settled on LoOvral. I had been taking it without the break week so that I wouldn't get my period.....and then they released Seasonale, which is essentially LoOvral that you take continuously. Perfect!

Condoms & other barrier methods - I kinda liked the convience of these, but I was always SOOOOO worried that I was pregnant every month. It just wasn't worth the stress to me.

    Anyway, I hope this helps.

Hey, just my no-one else seems to have mentioned it, I don't know it's available in the States but I have the contraceptive implant (Implanon) :o Just got it in a couple of weeks ago and it seems to work fine, apart from the evil huge bruise I have because of it . . . you have to be pretty strong-stomached to take it - they give you biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig anaesthetic injection (ow! ow!) then wait, cut a lil hole in your arm and inject the implant into it on your upper arm! But once it's in and healed you usually don't have to worry about it for three years. It's not as dodgy as the shot (less hormone released overall) because it's continual, so less side effects with the exception of erratic periods which they were VERY keen to stress, more often than not you get a lot less bleeding than normal but it can go the other way At first it was bad, and I really wanted to pull it out (just warning you here) but now I'm used to it, and it seems like the perfect compromise - I didn't want the shot and I hated taking the pill.
Fortunately it's free and the family planning services in Scotland are fantastic (aside from the one nurse there whose job appeared to be giving a good telling to the girls there for having unprotected sex and sending them home with a bumper bag of condoms - yes thankyou, I'm quite aware that I was silly, hence why I am here, yes I'm in a stable relationship, yes I've learned my lesson lady now push off - how rude! ??? ) so I can't really comment on how it is for you guys but if you can get it there it's worth considering. That said if anything bad comes up I'll let you know I usually get terrible acne and weight gain easily with the pill which doesn't appear to have happened yet so fingers crossed

    luv cate x

edit: oh by the way, as soon as you take it out you get your full regular fertility back in a couple of days, so it doesn't affect that. My ma had the IUD and hated it, it knocked her periods off-kilter and made her all bloaty. And most of my friends hated the shot, once it's in it's in and can really upset your body balance, not just fertility and bloating but it can encourage candidasis (sp?) and other bad infection-ness as it changes your acid/alkaline balance or something, anyways I didn't like the sound of it at all, I get really bad recurring urinary tract infections aggravated by the pill because it was too much, so I dread to think how the shot would affect me personally

Any birth control method has pros and cons. I also tried the pill and HATED IT. I gained so much weight, to the point of my doctor actually telling me I needed to drop 5 or so lbs. It was embarrasing. As soon as I stopped taking it I lost weight IMMEDIATELY. I'll never go back on the pill, I don't care how cheap it is.

I began the Depo shot 2 months ago. The pro to this method is that I have not gained ANY weight. Coming from someone who's sensitive to weight gain, this is the hugest plus availible, and cannot be topped. I am so happy I haven't put on pounds!

One con is that I've been "spotting" every single day. Every single day. Some days I bleed more than others, but I always need to wear at least a pantiliner to catch the blood. On days when I work I wear a tampon. It's annoying as hell because I feel like I've been on my period for 2 straight months. My friends who highly reccomended the Depo shot didn't bleed AT ALL following the first injection, so I'm jealous as hell. Some people stop bleeding all together, with others, like myself, it takes several months for the body to get used to it.

It all depends on what is more important to you. For me, it's weight, so I'm willing to deal with bleeding every day in order to remain baby-free.

Here the shot is waaaaay more expensive than the pill. I can get the pill for about eight dollars/pack, whereas the shot is over sixty dollars/injection/every three months.

Hmm... curious that all of you have had such bad experiences with the shot. I've been on it for close to a year, and the only side effect I've experienced has been irregular bleeding similar to that described by Esmerelda, which ceased after about six months, at which point my period completely stopped coming. (I don't know how dangerous that is -- I'm pretty sure my nurse practitioner would have told me if it were -- but I know I love it! So does my boyfriend.) No mood swings, no weight gain -- hell, I even LOST weight for the first month or so! And it doesn't seem to have affected my health any so far -- just had a pap smear, no abnormal results. I've been very happy with it.

HOWEVER, every body is different. Weight gain and the Period That Never Ends is quite common, among other possible side effects. I would avoid getting the shot during your period, which I've heard can be the culprit of the three-month-long cycle.

My gyno refused to administer the shot at any time other than the first 1-5 days of my period. I begged and pleaded to get it before then (I didn't want to wait!), but she said no way, hose'. Even the website says you're supposed to get your first injection during your period. I'm guessing that's to make sure you're not pregnant. (To combat that, I asked if I could take a pregnancy test just to speed up the process, but again, I was told no way, hose', you gotta wait till you start your period to begin the shot.)

I'm assuming this has to do with the fact that if you get the shot within the first five days of your cycle, the shot takes effect immediately; if you get it later in your cycle, it takes seven days to "kick in", so to speak. At least, that's what the nurse at Planned Parenthood told me. I wasn't on my period at the time, and they gave me the shot, no problem, and it has been working from what I can tell. (If not, I've been extremely lucky!) They did do a pregnancy test first, though. How strange that they would refuse it to you because of the stage of your cycle, since this is what I was told.

all hormonal birth control you are suppost to start eithier during your period or within the first week after your period starts. the instructions for both my patch and ring said to start them either the first day of my period or the first sunday after it started (supposidly because sunday is easier to remember to change it). With sunday start you still had to use a condom for a week, with first day start you could just not worry about it anymore. I wanted to start right away so I did first day, which happend to be a tuesday but then that put my period over the weekend so I changed it to friday and now my period starts on mon or tue and ends before the weekend.

Hmm. Are you sure it's ALL hormonal birth control and not just the ones that directly correlate to your cycle? Seems like it would make sense in terms of the pill, patch, or ring, but since the shot (Depo -- not the other shot that is only effective for one month) does not follow the menstrual cycle, it could be different. I don't know; all I know is I was about two weeks into my cycle and had no problem getting the shot, or continuing its use.

Has anyone had any experience with IUDs?
Miss George, I had my IUD for 5 years before I had it removed last March. I never had any problems with it except for some cramping when Aunt Flo came to town. I only removed it because I had a slight scare; My period was late, I had very bad cramps and even though my pregnancy test came back negative, the nurse had me frightened thinking it might be an ectopic pregnancy. So out it came. Now I'm considering getting another one. The pill doesn't work for me because I'm one of those gals who forgets to take it.

My doctor also will not insert the IUD until my period or right after to be certain I'm not prego.

Also, I had the non-hormonal one.

I got the shot for a few months when I wanted something easier than the pill... huge mistake I got acne like you wouldn't belive. My dermatologist was shocked! Anyway, if acne is any sort of concern for you (like you ever get a single pimple) I would advise against the shot!!

I don't think I ever had a a UTI with the IUD. I didn't even realize that could be a problem. I never even checked for the string, you're supposed to check every month for the string but I just let the doc check every year during my exam. No problems ever except I used to never have cramps and then after the IUD I would get some cramps so if you get cramps before the iud expect them to get worse after. Nothing a motrin or muscle relaxer can't fix though.

Luna used to be available, but no longer because the pharm. companies couldn't maintain the right amount of hormones in each shot. Instead of fixing the problem they just quit making it. This is straight from the horses mouth.

I abstain from sex entirely and don't use any form of birth control.

I would love to use the patch. But where the hell do you put it? Maybe a will create a thread for this.

I would NEVER get the shot. You WILL gain weight. Unless you absolutely cannot keep yourself from getting pregnant and are not eligible for an IUD, I would maybe suggest the shot.

Talk to a doctor or OBGYN.
