    Default My dog

    :'(
I just found out that my dog is really sick. His heart is enlarged and fluid leaked into his stomach. I'm crushed. This is my first dog, I've had him 3 years, and he's been really close to me (part of the family). I'm trippin SO HARD right now...
I feel guilty about every moment spent away from him and when I'm with him, it KILLS to listen to him panting and weezing.
I can barely keep it together.
    :'(

    I need words...

oh sweetie i am so sorry! sometimes losing a pet can be worse than losing your best friend...as hard as it is just try to focus on the good times and the fun you had together, the companionship and happiness you brought to each others lives...you never know, science is so advanced now maybe theres a chance the vet can cure him! i dont know exactly if the problem is fatal, but keep hope, he's only 3 yrs old, animals have a way of pulling through these things...if not, make the most of your last times with him...i know there is nothing i can really say to make you feel better so just hang in there, and know i feel for you! best wishes to you and your little one

I know how you feel in your heart... I have 2 dogs and 3 cats myself. I am so close with all of them. Try and not feel guilty about the time spent away from him.... just remember this... you are hurting so bad right now because you have a very large heart that has enough room for your family and the animal you are close to.... a lot of people done feel that close of a connection with animals and just have them as something there... things will be difficult and if he passes away, it will hurt, but all that means is you are very capable of loving. I will say a prayer for you and your dog and I hope all goes well. Just make him as comfortable as you can and let him know you love him... tell him with your heart, not your words... he will know.

I feel for you, :'(. When I was growing up we had a dog, it was the same age as me. When it passed away she was 13. Toby was my best friend. I still have dreams about the good times I had with her on the farm.

    Thank you so much!
Both of you are right, there is still time to spend with him, I guess what breaks my heart the most is the fact that he can't get around like he used to. No more family walks with him, he can't chase a ball around more than 5 mins.
I don't know how old he is, I'm guessing 5 years. I got him from a rescue org that brought him in off the street.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear. I DO know how hard it is, I really do. The pain is just way too much. Some people think its silly to have so much love for an animal, but I think those of us who love animals are a different breed of people. (no pun) hehe
Hun, PM me if you need to talk, I know the feeling and I know its very hard right now.

Btw, the fact that you rescued him shows what kind of a person you are. ( A great one with a huge heart) I will definetely say a prayer and hope for the best. Are they doing any kind of surgery? meds to keep him from any pain? etc... ?
What kind of dog is he? I have a boxer who is clumsy as hell too

Hon it is not inhumane if your dog is trying hard to breath to ask the vet what they think about his life as it is now. He will tire from huffing and puffing and the heart may stop. Cardic arrest. I know you wont let him suffer.

To have him forever, think about cremation, not expensive at all. Been there done that. It hurts BAD, and will, you will go through your proper steps of grieving, this is very normal.

My prayers are with you and your sweetie.

I personally can empathise as I have been thru the death of many pets with the most recent being back in the late 90s.

The difference between the grief I felt for my most recently departed animail companion (and familiar) Smokey was different to all the other pets prior to her as she was different.. she was more than just a 'pet/animal companion' she was also my familiar at the time (animal that helps me out magickally). In life she was a teacher and in death she was also a teacher.

She taught me alot about death, the process of grief (I understood myself a little more) and my beliefs surrounding death and if there is any 'life after death'.

If you go to my memorial page about her you will find links to a few pet grief sites that will, hopefully, be of as much help to you as they were to me. The rest of the page only is helpful if you are Pagan.

I'm so sorry about your dog. I work part-time as a technician in an animal emergency hospital. I know how heartbroken you must be. Take comfort in knowing that you gave him a good home when he didn't have one. Trust me, I've seen plenty of animals that have had long miserable lives. I've even taken some home knowing they didn't have long to live, but wanted them to have been loved if even for a short time. Just love him for as long as you have him. That's all that really matters to him.

    Hi Dahling...

I'm so sorry to hear about your doggie's failing health. You are awesome in my book for adopting a shelter pup. That's the only way I've ever gotten my pets, and the only way I ever will.

For me, there were many health problems involved with the pets I've adopted. It's hard, because these pets are turned in to shelters by their owners who basically lie and tell them that the animals are fine, no problems. You never know the true history.

I feel your pain, believe me. I adopted a chihuahua from a shelter 2 years ago. He is no longer with us. He came from an abusive home (4 young children who kicked him around, etc.) He ended up having uncontrollable seizures, due to throat damage caused by abuse. I wouldn't have done it any differently though, at least for the time he was with me, he was loved and happy, and he knew it. He was only 3 1/2 years old when he left this world. The place he came from apparently had him since he was a pup. The abuse and neglect was just too much for his little 3lb (if that) body.

I've been known for years as a place where people (especially neighborhood children) can take animals they find.. lol.. I've nursed abandoned kittens, birds, and countless other creatures back to health. It's incredibly fulfilling.

I'm here for you, if you need to talk. I'll keep you and your baby in my thoughts. Keep us updated, hon.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog. I went through a similar experience with the heart, trouble breathing. It's very frustrating and sad to see them so sick they can barely walk. Did the vet give any medicine? They gave me these pills to give my cat when the panting and gasping got too severe. (I don't remember the medicine but I think it helped open the airways, it helped the gasping to stop) I hope I don't make you feel worse by saying I did end up putting him to sleep. One day he just collapsed on his side struggling to breathe and the pills wouldn't work. It was hard but I tried and tried he just kept getting worse and suffering so much. I just wanted to say sorry and I hope he feels better soon.

Rhiannon, you just get better and better hun. I hate people who abuse animals, and parents who allow it are worse. I am so glad you saved that little chihuahua...

    Awww, Thanks Lexi *muah*.

I felt terrible when after numerous treatments and exams, the vet told me there was nothing more he could do. Those people were horrible to him. So my vet, as wonderful as he is, came to the house, and put him to sleep right at home, so he wouldn't have to slip away in a cold room.

My current rescue project is a possum baby. I was driving a few weeks ago, and saw him on the side of the road. I'm thinking the elements just got to him. It was a very cold night. He's too cute, just let me scoop him up and take him home. If all goes well, and he continues to strive, he'll be set free within the next week or so.

I also have an ongoing rescue baby. Believe it or not, she's an owl.. I think at this point, she deliberately hurts herself, then finds her way back to me.. LOL. First time she came to me, I had to fight the Autobaun society for her.. They eventually just gave up.. heh.

Ice, if you don't mind me asking, what type of doggie is he? I had a lab/chow mix who was the same weight.. Big hunka love there.. lol

Thank you all for your kind words, thoughts and prayers, that really helps alot.
We're still waiting for sonogram results, so the vet has him on 2 types of meds for now. They're 50/50 about his health so far. I just have the feeling inside that he won't be around much longer. I felt it before we found out he was sick...
Pharoah has rotty markings, but looking at his head gives him away. I don't know what he's mixed with, could be dobe or german shep.

Awww sweetie, keep the faith. There's always hope. Hopefully the sonogram will give you the information that you need, if it comes down to you making a decision. Please do keep us updated on this. I'll continue to keep you and Pharoah in my thoughts. He sounds like a beautiful mix. I love big dogs, because while they may be huge and intimidating, most of them are great big teddy bears.

Just give him extra love and hugs (which I'm sure you're already doing), it's great for both of you.

Best of luck to you, Dahling.

I really feel your pain as well. In my case its cats...

The last one I rescued from a "kill" shelter, where she was wasting away. She is so happy and affectionate. She sticks to your lap or shoulder and purrrrrrrs. So I named her Velcro.

The good news is that dogs and cats are very good about not being in pain. (allows them to survive in the wild). Although sometimes out of breath, and sometimes having trouble getting around, very few things hurt them too much. When it gets really bad, he will let you know that it is time to leave you.

It is very difficult to let go. Just remember how happy he is with you and how much you have meant to him.
