Hello - I'm thrilled to have found this site!
I just released my new book, Stripper Shoes, my true story of being a mom of teenagers, finishing my dissertation, taking a miserable executive position and turning it all upside down by taking a second job as an exotic dancer.

    Power shoes.
Were I so inclined, I could mortally wound with these shoes.
They don’t say, Come fuck me,
    they say, Go fuck yourself.

    Long story short:

I married and had children very young, went to college, went to grad school, got my doctorate, landed an exciting job and set out to realize everything I had worked so hard to achieve. Once I got everything I thought I wanted, I was completely miserable.

My new job as a corporate punk wasn't going so well and I had a very hard time "fitting into the existing culture." I felt very conflicted by the job content (advocating for large companies embroiled in class action discrimination suits). Plus, my colleagues (mostly women) took an immediate dislike to me. The office politics were entirely out of my league.

Feeling like had nothing really to lose (and being in a new city where no one knew me), I started working at night as a stripper and keeping a diary of everything that was going on with me, both at the club and at my day job. I finally got around to doing the one thing that I always really wanted to do - write a book.

It is about taking risks and trying not to be so driven by fear and obligation and everyone else's expectations. Also, I try to express the enjoyment of thinking of myself as a glamorous exotic dancer, instead of as somebody's Jewish mother, corporate punk, or feminist academic type. It's funny and upbeat, a little racy, and hopefully, inspirational.

Off to look through this site!!

    Cheers!

I self-published with a company called 1stbooks. I did have an offer from a small publishing house (after many, many rejections) but the contract would have given me little control and limited ownership. I can't say that I would recommend the self-publishing. If I knew then what I know now, I would have done my homework on printers/distributors and even cut 1stBooks out of the loop. Literally - go directly to a printer. I did everything but run the printing press myself - so it is unclear to me what I needed them for (other than to aggravate me!) Unless you are an established name, traditional publishing houses do nothing to promote your book. I've hired a publicist to help me market and I am doing what I can on my own. I'm exhausted and broke, but hoping for a great summer book tour.
It's a funny book about doing what you need to do to find your own path - and not letting anyone tell you that you can't. I hope you like it.

That's so wonderful! We need more women like you, sharing with the world that you don't have to be dumb or simply a "money grubbin' ho" in order to dance. Congratulations! I look forwward to reading your book ASAP.

    Thank you thank you!!

It doesn't appear to be on shelves yet, but it is available from amazon, bn.com and through my website

the publisher is if my link doesn't work!

I miss dancing. I feel all out of shape and too much in my mind. I wish I could get benefits dancing - I'd go back. I didn't make mouch money compared to what I hear and read -- I'm a softie and would sit and chat and ask men questions instead of hustling. Maybe if I went back and did it as my only job, I'd try harder to bring home $. I wasn't the youngest or the prettiest, but I was enthusiastic - the stripper with the great attitude! I've considered doing a book tour but at strip clubs, like maybe a feature -- anyone have thoughts on that? Would I lose my good attitude fast? I wonder.

Not to be rude but I read a little of what you had on the site and every sterotype we fight was in those two chapters. ALL girls had been abused, most were stupid, cheep and sleazy. I dont know where you worked but that isnt the case where most of us do, I'm not saying they dont exist but you added to every hollywood sterotype ever invented!

I would be intersetd in reading your book but on the other hand we all have the same story. It would probably be like reading our own lives-LOL. You might want to try targeting other people besides us who dont know what the story is and have no idea what the stripping life is like. Either way Best of Luck!!!!

I should definitely put a few more chapters up -- you have to keep in mind it is chronological and each chapter will only reflect a short period of time. I write about the women I work with in my office, the teamwork at the club, the strippers who are definitely not stereotypical. .. but these were real experiences and as we know stereotypes come from somewhere (though shouldnt define anyone!) - so yes, you are both right - it is familiar territory for those of us who dance. What is different is my perspective as an older woman, mom, professional choosing to dance for the first time. A big part of the story has to do with what is expected of us as women and how things are not always what them seem - I make many contrasts between my so called *legitimate* job and the professionalism and camaraderie I enjoyed at the club.
Still, point taken -- I need to put a few more chapters up on my site to give a better picture. Thanks for the feedback!!!!
