How processed foods will make you fat even if you don't overeat!

It made me really sad when I heard recently that the House had passed a billed making it illegal to sue fast food restaurants for obesity and all the related ills that come from it. We have been sold down the river and this is going to directly affect you, your kids, your grand kids and just about all of the people we know and love. They are in effect circling the wagons.

Here is what is at stake. 350,000 people die each year from obesity related illnesses. 450,000 die from smoking. But as our level of health deteriorates soon obesity related deaths will outstrip the smoking deaths. We are reaching a point at which the future generation will not live as long as their grandparents did in spite of all the marvels of scientific medical advancement.

At the core of this obesity problem is MSG. MSG is not an herb nor is it a spice; it is a drug designed to addict us to junk foods. MSG is shorthand for processed free glutamic acic, i.e., glutamic acid that has been manufactured or freed from protein through processing or bacterial fermentation. It is a toxic substance. It can be used without disclosure. If you have not read the lab reports on MSG then you will probably not be aware that it is present in most of the processed foods and meats that we eat. It is present in everything from baby foods to most of the foods that we eat in restaurants.

On the corporate level the people who engineer processed foods have read the lab reports and they know just what a deadly poison MSG is. They know the devastating effect that it has on brain chemistry. They know what it does to the pancreas and they have studies showing the results that MSG has had on lab animals resulting in everything from diabetes and obesity to uncontrollable violence. Instead of stopping the use of MSG they have lobbied to change the labeling laws. They now have over 15 different names that they can put on the label to mislead you so that you don't even know that you are eating MSG. These include "natural flavors", "glutamic acid" and "glutamate".

The active ingredient in MSG is Glutamic Acid which is an amino acid (protein) present naturally in a lot of foods including fruits and vegetables. It is also present in our brain chemistry where it acts as a neuro transmitter carrying messages from the brain to neuro receptors throughout our body. The processed form of Glutamic Acid, a form of MSG, is an excitotoxin. It is so concentrated that it over-stimulates the neuro pathways to the point of literally burning them out.

The reason that the processed food industry is so in love with this drug is that it makes even cheap food taste irresistible. If you had two food products and they both had the same exact ingredients in them but only one had MSG and the other didn't you would choose the one with MSG saying that it tasted better. In short no one in the processed food industry can afford to stop using MSG and stay in business unless everybody stops using it.

In America we have two lines of defense that are supposed to protect us from this type of corporate greed. One is the doctors. Through the AMA and the FDA they have a huge amount of power. They have basically sold us down the river. There is no limit as to how much MSG a company can put in our food. And the foods with the highest levels of MSG are the foods that are marketed to our kids. And if you do a chart showing the rise of Childhood Diabetes you will see that as our level of consumption of MSG-loaded food increases so has the rate of Childhood Diabetes.

Here is a brief overview of how MSG relates directly to Childhood Diabetes and Diabetes in general. In the pancreas there are many Glutamic Acid neuro receptors. When we have an excess of Glutamic Acid in our system then the pancreas starts working overtime. At first it creates an excess of insulin which then races through the body rounding up all of the blood sugar and turning it into fat deposits. This form of obesity is the first stage of Childhood Diabetes. Then the pancreas which is totally overworked just burns out. Now you have full blown Childhood Diabetes. Diabetes is not a disease it is a multi billion dollar industry. And it is totally preventable.

I have a friend who is obese and yet he eats less than I do. He is a starving student living on Top Ramen (loaded with MSG). So many people are becoming obese without even overeating, just from consuming foods high in MSG on a daily basis. How can we take "personal responsibility" for our weight when we are being deceived and lied to by the processed food industry? By the way, Kraft Foods and many other major foods companies are now owned by Phillip Morris, the tobacco industry giant. These are companies that specialize in making fortunes through addicting the public to their products. It is their business model.

I totally believe that in the current political, medical, corporate climate, the best interests of a whole generation have been sold out. This is not rocket science. All you have to to is look around you. Half of all US adults are overweight and so are a third of all US children and youth. So many people have been robbed of their quality of life by those who were placed in positions to protect them.

The second line of defense is the lawyers who are like the watch dogs of corporate greed. And that is why I was so upset today when they passed that bogus law, because they are trying to make sure that the lawyers can't even begin to bring about the law suits that should be being filed all over the country as we speak.

And the issue of Glutamic Acid has never even been brought up. The agencies who are supposed to help us know how to eat better are pushing low fat processed foods as the answer. They are barking up the totally wrong tree. Fats are one of the main nutrients that our foods supply us with. Without Omega Fatty Acids our brains cannot function. Eating raw healthy fats does not make us overweight. In order for us to have a well balanced diet we need Fats, Proteins, and Carbohydrates. Plus water. If you mess with any of these basic food groups then you have an imbalance in your diet that will manifest itself as a serious illness sooner or later; an imbalance which the doctors will then treat with drugs and surgery.

The thing that upsets me more than anything else is the fact that they were putting MSG in baby foods in the 1950s and Congress passed a law making it illegal to put MSG in baby foods. So that means that they have known about the horrendous side effects of MSG since the 1950s. So why didn't they make it illegal to put it in all of the nation's food supply? What the baby food companies did was start putting Glutamic Acid in the baby food using different labeling because they noticed that when the baby food had Glutamic Acid in it that the babies would eat one spoon after another. And when they would add the Glutamic Acid in different forms they would print on the label "NO MSG ADDED". (Perhaps cooked food tastes so bad to us when we start out fresh in life that we need to add MSG to get babies to eat it at all).

When we find ourselves under attack by this type of Machiavellian Processed Food Industry that has not only poisoned but drugged our nation's food supply then we must one and all answer the Clarion's Call.

    The below is from truthinlabeling.org

These are some of the ways of hiding MSG in a product label:
    Glutamate Glutamic acid Gelatin
Monosodium glutamate Calcium caseinate Textured protein
Monopotassium glutamate Sodium caseinate Yeast nutrient
Yeast extract Yeast food Autolyzed yeast Hydrolyzed protein
(any protein that is hydrolyzed) Hydrolyzed corn gluten

These OFTEN contain MSG or create MSG during processing:
    Carrageenan Maltodextrin Malt extract
Natural pork flavoring Citric acid Malt flavoring
Bouillon and Broth Natural chicken flavoring Soy protein isolate
Natural beef flavoring Ultra-pasteurized Soy sauce
Stock Barley malt Soy sauce extract
Whey protein concentrate Pectin Soy protein
Whey protein Protease Soy protein concentrate
Whey protein isolate Protease enzymes Anything protein fortified
Flavors(s) & Flavoring(s) Anything enzyme modified Anything fermented
    Natural flavor(s)
    & flavoring(s) Enzymes anything Seasonings
    (the word "seasonings")

Please feel free to pass this on to the people you care about.

I think its GREAT that they shouldnt be able to sue!!! WTF? If I get fat eating McDonalds everyday, thats my fault. McDonalds didnt FORCE feed me, or those people who tried to sue. I think people try to sue for anything. Its like the people who sue tobacco companies for dying of lung cancer, and such.
I understand sueing fast food places if you find a RAT in your food, (as I believe once happened) but for gettign fat? No way!!!!!!!!!
Hell, I know people who order chinese food and say, NO MSG, or the place says they dont have it.

So, lets see... I gain weight very quickly if I eat a lot of junk. Now, I DO want to be a millionaire... hmmm
I'll just pig out on mickey d's for a few years, and BOOM, let me sue them. Surely I can eventually pay for all the surgery I want to fix myself... LOL Come on now, people who eat these things are well aware that they are addictive and make ya fat. Its their own fault.

I think the MSG that is really dangerous is the MSG cable network owned by Cablevision. It has turned a number of sports fans into couch potatoes and you know who uses a lot of potatoes-McDonalds. And you know who makes a lot of couches? -- Naugahyde. Do you know how many Naugas have to die for each chair? As many as the number of Olays that die for ever bottle of that oil. The thing you have to watch out for above all else is when they cook the Nauga flesh in Oil of Olay.

Not that it really has anything to do with the thread, but I just wanted to let you know that right now I'm eating leftover corned-beef and cabbage with oodles of mustard and mayonnaise.

    It is sooooo good.....
What pray tell Miss George are you doing having leftovers?

I hope you had leftovers of both of those too. A second go around on that combo sounds great. What is for dinner tonight? I hope it is Chinese in honor of the thread.

I'm afraid the cheesecake and carrot cake didn't make it to the leftover stage. They didn't even make it to the sharing-with-the-husband stage.

I had originally planned to do a stir fry with veggies and tofu and some nice spices here at home, since I do typically eat a healthy diet (by most people's standards, not by Ryan's), butin honor of tyhis thread, my plans have changed:

Tonight, I go to the Chip Shop in Brooklyn, where they have the most fabulous fish and chips this side of the pond (simply heavenly, with malt vinegar), and for dessert I will have

DEEP-FRIED TWINKIES AND MARS BARS! YEAH!

Ryan, honestly, this thread was informative for me. I didn't know some of this info. At least it's not a repeat of the same.....

ryan what do you eat? how can we escape these foods? only raw fruits, veggies, beans? The info is good to know. Someone suggested that there was something in fast food and many other things that we love to eat. I didn't believe them, but now...

I did a quick search and found this; copy and pasted from this source http://www.truthinlabeling.org/hiddensources.html

MSG reactions have been reported to soaps, shampoos, hair conditioners, and cosmetics, where MSG is hidden in ingredients that include the words "hydrolyzed," "amino acids," and "protein."

Low fat and no fat milk products often include milk solids that contain MSG.

Drinks, candy, and chewing gum are potential sources of hidden MSG and of aspartame and neotame. Aspartic acid, found in neotame and aspartame (NutraSweet), ordinarily causes MSG type reactions in MSG sensitive people. Aspartame is found in some medications, including children's medications. Neotame is relatively new and we have not yet seen it used widely. Check with your pharmacist.

Binders and fillers for medications, nutrients, and supplements, both prescription and non-prescription, enteral feeding materials, and some fluids administered intravenously in hospitals, may contain MSG.

According to the manufacturer, Varivax–Merck chicken pox vaccine (Varicella Virus Live), contains L-monosodium glutamate and hydrolyzed gelatin both of which contain processed free glutamic acid (MSG) which causes brain lesions in young laboratory animals, and causes endocrine disturbances like OBESITY and REPRODUCTIVE disorders later in life. It would appear that most, if not all, live virus vaccines contain MSG.

    ---------------------------
Keep in mind that lab animals are subjected to dosages hundreds of times higher than any person would normally come across. But maybe, just maybe, Ryan is on to something here..... :o

Today, there is no crop that we know of that has not been approved for treatment with MSG by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

    Source: http://www.truthinlabeling.org/msgsprayed.html

According to that, unless we all start growing our own carrots in our backyards we can't help but eat MSG. I give up, I'm going to McDonalds for a veggie burger, fries, and diet coke.

We have a little Italian place that has fabulous homemeade dressing. I had a relative that worked their and found out their secret recipe. It has MSG. So I went and bought a bottle in the spice section. I haven't used it yet.

Ryan, I guess I don't understand how it affects your brain chemistry. Just by making us addicted to it? I know you've explained a lot, but if you (or someone) could explain more, that'd be great.

Are you involved politically? Do you write people who can influence policies expressing your concerns?

anais: this site provides unbiased, scientific information not persuaded by the food industry about the facts and fantasies about msg, as well as studies and readily available foods that are MSG free. On the other hand they also inform readers about the foods that are exceptionally high in MSG.

I eat healthfully most of the time, but sometimes I will cram a big 'ol McGriddle into my mouth after a late night dancing in Vegas or New Orleans and my eyes roll into the back of my head from the MSG explosion dancing on my tongue

A lot of people often forget that organic foods and their ilk are often pricier than processed foods. Every time I go to Whole Foods market I'm always shocked when the finally tally comes up because it doesn't seem like I'm getting enough groceries for the price! Fortunately, dancing enables me to afford to eat well like that. If you're talking to a family where the parents make $8-$10 an hour each (far too common now) with kids, of course they're gonna go for a big 'ol box of ConAgra crap.

Also, I can't wait to see "Supersize Me" about a guy who chronicles on film living on nothing but Mickey D's for a month. He gained about a pound a day and his liver was toxic!

It's sad how diet, like most things, is related to income.

Oh man, I had a bad reaction to MSG once. I've always eaten chinese food, but for some reason, it hit me one night. My hubby and a girlfriend of mine were all driving together out of town when it started: My chest tightened up, my face went numb and tingly, in fact, everything was tingling. My breath became really shallow, talk about WTF freakin' out! By the time we arrived at the hospital, I was fine for the most part, but I still wanted to get checked out to know what the hell just happened! MSG overdose. Apparently the doc said they get quite a few people every month coming in with this! He described it as being somewhat similar to an extreme caffeine overload. Ugh, I have to specially request no MSG, and definately stay away from [chinese] buffets!

Ryan this is a very intriguing topic but you did not back up any of your claims with proof. (English 101). I am sorry but until I know where you got your information I don't really buy it, at least not to the extent you are speaking.

My whole family is incredibly fit and healthy and we all eat mcdonalds on a regular basis.

I think you have taken some specific data and modified it tremendously to present some sort of shock facter. Some things you say have validity, but that will not change my eating style. Your minu does not seem that appetizing or even complete. Sorry.

    SCARY!!!!!

At first I thought that what happened to you was what happened to my sis. (But your doc confirmed MSG overload so i was wrong)
But one day my sis asked for something specific from the chinese place. I dont know about where all of you are, but these places arent always the BEST of clean, but they are great. Anyway she ate her food and the same thing happened to her... anyway at the bottom of her food was a shrimp. ???? Her plate didnt even HAVE shrimp, it was a chicken dish!
So anyway, she had an allergic reaction as shes allergic to shellfish (iodine?)
They cook everything in the same pans, and woks...
pretty gross if ya ask me and not very safe!
Luckily she works at a doctors office, so they just gave her some benadryl, or a shot of something and she was ok
