    Default pole grip

when i go on the stage in my club, i find it hard to get a good grip to do any pole tricks. it always seems to be slippery and i am afraid to do many tricks in case i go flying on my ass!

before i go on i wipe the pole down with the nearby towel and wash my hands so they aren't sweaty/greasy or whatever, but it doesn't seem to help much..

does anyone have any tips on how to get a better grip of the pole so i don't have to hang on for dear life?!

    thank you in advance!

    xx cameron xx

Well, if you do a lot of pole work, you eventually develop these god-awful calluses (sp?) on your palm, near the bottom of your fingers. They help you grip, but they sure are ugly!
Otherwise, you just need to work on strengthening your grip muscles. That comes with lots of pole work, or you can buy a little squeezy-ball contraption to help (you know, those stress balls?).
Once your grip and forearm muscles are conditioned to it, you'll have no problems, even with a greasy pole (ew).

PS, I just remembered, when i first started I used fabric band-aids on the tops of my palms. They help tremendously with grip, and also prevent the icky calluses. Heta the band aid with a hairdryer so that it doesn't come off mid-show.

    Hope that helps!

Are you wiping down the pole before you start your routine? When you use the pole, you leave oil from your hands...which makes the pole slippery.

    thanks for the advice...

venus i do wipe down the pole with a towel right before my show, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

scarlett i will try the band-aids tonight, i hope they don't end up hanging off half way through my show lol...

if anyone else has any advice (i think someone told me to put hairspray on my hands, has anyone tried this?) i would really appreciate it

i don't know if this would work but when i used to do gymnastics we would put powder on our hands before we did the parallel bars...i think it was supposed to absorb the oils/sweating to give you better friction on the pole...you might want to test it out first b/c i dont know if its the same type of poles...i always have baby powder w/ me at work anyway, its worth a try

The one website that sells the video on how to do pole tricks also sells two products that are supposed to help with grip. Also, when you wipe the pole down with the towel, does the towel have alcohol on it? Alcohol helps tremendously. Personally though, I think that some poles are just grippier than others. I was used to the one where I used to work, and then I went on an audition and actually kind of got stuck on the pole because it was so grippy! The place I work now has really slick poles though, so I don't do much pole work there.

Even though it looks kind of odd, girls at my club touch the stage floor and get even the little dust there onto their hands for grip. Doesn't work at the beginning of the week right after the floor has been cleaned, but otherwise, can help. Similar to the babypowder, but doesn't show up as harshly in blacklight.

    I agree Luna,

It helps if your hands are a little dirty... wierd but true.

try breathing on your palms (as if you're trying to warm them up on a cold day)
It makes them a slightly clammy, this always helps me.

We have brass poles that are frequently wiped with alcohol and the only time they are ever slippery is when girls get the bright idea to wear body oils or oil based lotions.... dangerous to those of us that do alot of pole work.
Also make sure you wash your hands before going on stage, hair products and such make hands greasy.
    Good Luck

Maybe you could try a tiny bit resin on your hands. Thats what ballet dancers use to help with slipping , I think pro- bowlers use it too. I believe you can purchase it at places like Sports Authority and if not dancewear shops that sell pointe shoes will often sell it, Stride Rite in the mall sometimes has it.
If you can get the powder form just sprinkle a little on your hands. Or if you can buy it in brick or rock form and grind it into powder yourself- it's easy. I think it's cheaper that way too.

    Hope that helps

Metho (Metholated Spirits)... are you able to spray the pole down and then wipe it? This is the process we all do at my club. The spray bottle of metho and paper towel is located at the side of the stage. We all take some paper towel, spray enough metho on it and wipe the poles down with that... it works.
