Default Horrible pains -- too old to dance!

Over the past 2 weeks I've experienced horrible constant pain in my neck. After 2 massages I called a chiropractor and the day after the adjustment I went to work and now...Sharp pain in my hip!! It froze up during a dance and had to talk my way through the next 2....

It was busy at work for the first time in weeks and I had to turn down dances!! (adding to my snobby girl image I'm sure). Anyway I'm waiting for the chiropractor to come back over.

I feel like a decrepit old lady

Anyone else suffer from dancer related pains? What do you do to combat it?

My back constantly aches. I arch it alot when I dance to fake some curves. I have to do a lot of stretching at night, that helps a little. Long baths are the best!

Being a little older (34) I can tell you that I think that a lot of dancers, even the ones as young as 21, expierence this kind of pain.

The key is to not over do it. I know the back bend thing is very sexy, but try adding a chair into your lap dances and kneel on the chair before bending backward placing your wieght either on your legs, or by sitting strattled on the chair with your back to the customer, and use the back of the chair to hang on to while doing the back bend. This will take the weight in your arms as well as in the back, so your back muscles aren't doing all the work. Also try using the chair as a mini stage doing modified floor moves in front of the customer.

Having a chair placed in front of you customer will get you to his level when giving a dance, not violate the no contact rules of the club, and is a very sexy prop during a LD.

I also recommend seeing your chiropractor regularly, as well as scheduling regular sports massage. Some dancers get a lot of benefit from pilates and yoga. Personally I like just doing plain old aerobics and weight lifting to keep me strong and fit.

Think about taking sports supplements, too. Glucosamine is good for joint and muscule pain. This is usually used by people who are pre-arthritic. I know a lot of young 20's people who use this suppliment to help with the pain of sports injury.

Good luck to you, and I hope you feel better soon.

The chiropractor just left & hopefully I'm cured enough to work tommorow.. A perfectly good weekend down the tubes but what can you do? I'll pick up some glucosamine tommorow maybe. Thanks for the tips! I planned on dancing for another 10-15 years but if it's this bad in my 20's I may need to explore other options.

I'm almost 28, been dancing since I turned 18 and I feel your pain!! I have been to chiropractors and it seemed to help for a little while, then got worse. Now, I just see a good massage therapist, 2 a month that specializes in sports injuries. The best thing I ever did!

I used to have chronic pain in my lower right back. Sometimes when I moved (I never knew when or how it would happen suddenly) the pain would shoot down my left leg and I could feel it the worst in my left knee. I don't know if it was my sciatic nerve or a pinched nerve but I modified my routine somewhat and wore 7 inchers instead of my ususal 8's. Oh yeah, I took anti-inflamitants as well as pain killers when it got really bad. It eventually went away after several months. (knock on wood)

That would be the most chronic pain I've experienced dancing.

If it wasn't for the 'in-house massage' guy... I'd be in trouble! He does a great massage (probably more along the lines of sports) and chiropractic work as well (he is qualified to do a multiple of things).

I get pain in my knees when the weather is really bad (they cramp up). I have sore feet only because I'm on my feet alot. My back is sore due to dancing (arching etc)... and my neck.. well.. it is a mixture of dancing and using the computer.

So I can last 5 more years (that's the time span I've given myself)... I know that I definately have to make sure that I always have $$ put aside to invest in a good therapist.... WEEKLY (if possible).

Something that works for me---yoga and pilates. I also work out and try to focus on my core--abs and back--- if you make the muscles stronger, they'll put up with those nasty high heels much better.
Lots and lots of stretching. I do bikram yoga- where they turn up the heat to 105 and then you do an hour and a half of intense yoga- it's really hard but works wonders and tightens everything too. Pilates--be careful with neck pain-- lay your neck down during exercises instead of keeping it up- prevents further strain. Pilates works the core muscles--keeps lower back pain at bay. You don't need much weight resistance on those muscles- your own body weight is plenty.
And massages and hot baths with epsom salts!!!

    Also---
Learn and practice good posture--- my worst culprit. You'd be surprised how less pressure there will be on your spine, neck, etc., if you sit up and stand up straight--
My neck always hurts--- I sleep on my face and have big boobs so it's totally whacked when I sleep!! Been trying to break the habit for years. Sleep on your back with one of those posture pillows.
I'm not big on chiropractors, but I do love a good deep massage, by a young, cute man. LOL

I recently posted a thread titled "numbing and tingling" and after seeing my dr and a Chiropractor, it was determined that I am in the early stages of arthritis and I had a pinched nerve in my back causing the numbing and tingling.. which is now all better now.

In conjunction with the regular aches and pains and bruises, my knees are also in constant pain... and are getting arthritis as well.. along with my feet.

I take the Glucosamine and I also am beginning sports massages. I will be retiring in one year hopefully, however, my dr suggested as soon as 3 months... until then, I will be continuing with massages, hot tubs and anti infamatories.

I have been club-dancing for only two months before being out for two weeks for what my chiropractor dubbed a "sprained knee." I've sprained my ankles and wrist before, and this feels completely different. (A lot of popping and clicking, with pain beneath the knee cap and absolutely no swelling) Nonetheless, whatever it is came from dancing, and stripping in particular, as none of my other dancing or martial arts ever gave me knee problems. My first day back was today, and I left early for that same reason. I've got some ligament problems from dancing forever, but I'm just 22, so either I have bad luck, or being young and dancing and with physical problems is not uncommon. This is a good thread with some good advice.

i voted "shoulder" because i am typing this with one hand, due to a partial shoulder dislocation i obtained last week at work. that's why i have been at home on the computer all week, hah hah. it's the first time i have hurt myself dancing, and it was during a very simple floor move, it never should have happened. all i can do is be grateful i wasn't on the pole when it happened, i would have fallen and broken something...... i had to pop my shoulder back in onstage, and needless to say, i haven't worked since. my arm has been in a sling and i plan to let it fully heal before i attempt going back to work. i am not chancing a permanent injury, or having it slip again while i'm using it to hold myself twenty feet in the air, thank-you-very-much.

My everything hurts....especially my knees and my back from arching and crawling so much. I pride myself on being a good dancer, but lately I have been taking it easy. In the end it really isn't worth it.

My knees are fucked. During my last year of dancing I couldn't even kneel anymore on stage--no floor work at all because if I did it, I'd have to use my knees to get up again. First it was my right knee, so I started using my left to kneel and my right to push up off the floor, soon after my left began to go out. I still have trouble with them. I went to a doctor and he told me the cartilage and ligaments are torn all around my knee caps. Because there's such a poor blood supply, it can take years to repair, and normally they never return to full function.

My knees have gotten really bad just in the last few months. Part of it is due to the cold, I'm sure. My feet hurt too sometimes. Back pain is a constant but more in my neck and shoulders because when I stress out that's where it all goes. I started taking the Glucosamine a few weeks ago. No real improvement yet but I'm told it can take several months. I'm not able to do floor work really any more either. It sucks because that used to be a fair amount of my show and now I feel I'm pretty boring to watch! My only hope is that when I retire my poor body will eventually recover from the years of physical abuse dancing has put it through!

I have old hip injuries from my *desk job* that are aggravated by dancing. Other old pains went away from being in motion. The one thing I can attribute to dancing is this groovy Ice Pick in the knee feeling. Oh yeah, baby... ow!

Stretching and vitamins help... but be careful of iron supplements, tho... my Dr. said ithey can make joint pain worse in some people.

No dancing has actually improved how I feel, I feel great aside from the odd aching muscle and tiredness.
I do have regular Chiropractic though (not for anything originally dancing related...) I used alot of Arnica cream on my knees and wear over the knee stockings always, oh and "sensible shoes", lol! Lucky i can get away with it, I'm sure makes me much more comfortable than most other dancers!
