    Default How to Make Costumes

Anyone out there sewn, put together, or modified their costumes. The ones I order are so damn expensive!!

I saw that Isis is thinking about selling some. I can sew well, maybe I should get creative as well.

Has anyone added patches, trim, changed length, bought patterns, fixed something....Etc.

    Any Costume disasters out there??

    What about simple homemade accesories?

I'm new to sewing and I don't really know much about the proper ways to make different things, or like how to use patterns or whatever. But I have a sewing machine and I've made myself a couple little skirts for work. They're easy because they're small and simple. I imagine making a tube dress would be pretty easy too, but I haven't tried it yet. I want to make some more stuff, maybe that's what I'll do with my afternoon.

Before i stopped dancing i messed around a little with modifying and making my own. not just costumes, clothes also. over time I've gotten better and i mainly hand sew. I get ideas from the world around me the fashion industry and different cultures. Keep your eyes open to whats around and don't be afraid to try new things. If you want some ideas let me know. there's lots of stuff thats easy to do.
    bye for now

Start with items that aren't too expensive. I have a regular sewing machine (not a serger needed for the strechy fabrics), and I like to embelish on things I already have. I buy plain gowns sold at teenage clothings stores like Deb, 20 Below, Rave, Mariposa, ect. at cheap on-sale prices.

Then I add sequins, fringe or other types of doo-dads. I will remove parts or add other parts. Make the gown easier to remove by adding velcro instead of buttons or zippers etc. I also use old clothes from Goodwill and turn them into costumes. I have several pair of jeans that need to be cut off and turned into stripper style "Daisy Dukes". I plan on using the discarded pant legs to make triangle bikini tops to go with the cutoffs.

Be like a little kid making clothes for your Barbies. Let your imaginenation run wild. If something doesn't turn out the way you wanted, get out your seam ripper and try something different.

If you don't enjoy sewing, maybe buying costumes from other girls would be a better way to go. I know a girl who has all of her costumes made by the costume lady because she just can't stand sewing, so paying 50% more than ready-to-wear is totally worth it to her to have custom outfits.
