Default News stations slandering our club!!

Well, if you have been listening to the Oklahoma City news channels, there was quite a little drama going on circulating about our strip club, Xxxtasy Ranch. I feel the need to tell everyone that this story is completely inaccurate, and also to tell people about it because of the effect these kind of things have on the stripping business. So, here it is, in two parts, what the news says, and what actually happened.

LYING NEWS STORY: Two dancers were abducted by a patron and taken next door to the hotel, where they were raped and beaten. The heroic bouncer breaks the door down, rescues the girls, clothes them, and feeds them a "hot meal."

THIS HAPPENED: The boyfriend of a dancer (who had worked at our club for one day) came in and started to hit her. The cops were called, and he was arrested for assault.

Now, that's all that's in the police files. It was a domestic violence thing, which our club had little if anything to do with. Two of the news stations came in to speak with our manager, and he told them that was it, not much happened. They even asked for the name of the heroic bouncer, and he said he couldn't give his name because there was no bouncer because that didn't happen. He said they looked disappointed about that. Apparently, if they chose to run that story anyway. The owner of our clubs is considerring a lawsuit, and I hope he files it. I got online to look for this story when I got home. It was run at some time in the last couple of days. I can't find the story. I suppose they hid it. But it happened, because our customers have asked about it when they came in today and my co-workers are talking about it. I wish I'd seen the stories myself so I could confirm that end of it.

This makes me angry because things like this are why strip clubs and strippers have the inaccurate public perception that they do. It makes me angry because they've possibly hurt our business, certainly hurt our reputation, and hurt our feelings. It makes me angry because it's perpetuating all the ugly societal myths about strip bars.

All I can say is "welcome to political agenda journalism 101". It's very easy for any news outlet to print just about any absurd story or level all sorts of absurd charges as front page news. It's also very easy to print a 2 line retraction a week later on page 47. In the meantime, the front page story has left the false impression that the "powers that be" wished for, and the moms & pops have drawn the incorrect conclusion that the "powers that be" wished for. This will come in handy in an election year as some local politician chooses to run on a platform of 'cleaning up the sleaze' instead of really important issues like city budget balancing, quality education etc.

If there's any consolation, at least no criminal charges were levelled against the dancers. Bogus charges of lewd conduct, prostitution etc. are just as hard to shake, with the added negative of having to pay real fines or do real jail time plus leaving a real black mark on the dancers permanent records.

As far as the clubowner bringing a lawsuit against the news agency, it ain't gonna accomplish anything except exacerbate the negative publicity towards the club. Additionally, it could prompt a backlash from the news outlet and/or city hall which might be much worse for club business than one bullshit negative front page story - like for example a new no contact ordinance or undercover cops working the club on a nightly basis. Angry or not, discretion is the better part of valor in this case. The clubowner would be farther ahead using the money that a lawsuit would cost to make contributions to city council members up for re-election !

My thoughts exactly, Melonie. In this instance, the club and/or girls did nothing wrong. In fact, an event like this would cause some sympathy, IMO.

We had a similar situation with one of the news stations in Wichita a couple of months ago. There were a bunch of protestors outside a local adult video store. It was apparently a slow news day so the local ABC affilate decided to lead off the newscast with this ridiculous non-story which served no other purpose but to give these fundamentalists free advertising for their pathetic cause, and themselves a ratings boost. They of course tried to cover their asses with the obligatory, "We tried to contact the owner of the video store who was unavailable for comment". No shit.

They even compounded their damage by stating some "pornography facts", their sources being the American Family Association and the National Law Center. Both groups have well known anti-porn agendas and aren't exactly being objective when they spew out statistics. I sent that station a nasty e-mail lambasting them for such shoddy one-sided journalism, but never did hear anything back from them. Surprise, surprise. They know full and well, the overwhelming majority of their viewers are not going to have the time nor patience to check up on their "facts".

Same in my situation. The average person who would go to their website is more discriminating and might take them to task for disseminating such nonsense, whereas the average person who watches the newscast isn't so intelligent and will more likely absorb their propaganda at face value.

The point of putting a salacious story like that in a newscast is to get people to watch it. They're trying to get the highest ratings possible so they can suck up to potential advertisers. The website by comparison doesn't generate them that much revenue.

Your club owner filing a lawsuit against the station won't fix anything as the burden of proof is upon him to prove the newspeople were taking liberties with what really happened. Buying some after midnight advertising on the offending station(s) and using it as leverage to prevent this sort of nonsense in the future just might. Hell, maybe that's what the station had in mind.

Actually, the stations are free to reject proposals for advertising from any businesses which they choose.

Yup, this is exactly what the NYC stations did with the Hustler story - they led with footage of Hustler dancers working on stage ! Sex definitely sells, but in this case it wasn't the dancers who were banking it was the TV stations, the Hustler club, and the city councilwoman who got nationwide air time to hype her new anti-dance club crusade.

no wonder the public does not have a clue. Of the two news stories that I was involved in both were wrong. I bet 99% of all news is either made up or dressed up.

Hence the reason I don't pay much heed to the news. I also generally don't watch it as well as any 'current affairs' type of programs.

Two of the main current affairs programs here are called "Today Tonight" (Channel 7 network) and "A Current Affair" (Channel 9 network). The times that the news and these programs have either hyped up something or whatever.. they're useless.

I just watch them to pass time if I'm bored and don't want to go on the internet or read a book.

This all comes down to my theory about the differences with the U.S. and Australia. The U.S. was founded by English Puritans and Australia was founded by English Criminals. Two basically identical countries founded by people with basically identical heritage and the one who prides itself on freedom of speech is ready to close down all pornography.

I have yet to find any group that I hate more than Fundamentalist Christians (or any cult-like sect of Christianity. They hate freedom of thought, speech, and action- if they had it their way, America would be no better than dictatorial counties.

The root of any major objection or issue relates to the threat to heterosexual marriage. The gay marriage issue (for obvious reasons), the abortion issue (b/c it give women too much freedom), drug laws (drug addicts cannot hold relationships), taxes (lower taxes for married couples), etc. Pornography and strip clubs threaten the concept of marriage in the eyes of these hypocrites.

Before I started dancing, I worked in several restaurants. Sundays were THE worst day of the week because all of these people- just out of church- acted as though they did their "good duty" of the week and that gave them the right to give their waitress endless s**t, then tip $1 (after all, if I'm working a Sunday morning, then I must be morally inferior to them and don't deserve anything at all). These same hypocrites are those picketing and protesting pornography- even though most of them do not know the first thing about the Christian religion sense they go to church for social reasons.
