Default "glamour" photoshoots vs average ones?

i dunno if its worth it to pay a few hundred to get some glamour pics done with airbrushing and lies, or get a normal professional photographer to take a portfolio?

the glamour ones are those ones that turn your everyday old hag into a covergirl, or you know like a decent photographer without SO much fancy lighting and airbrushing.

how do you tell a good photographer??and how much do they normally cost??

    i wanna try get into swimsuit magazine work ( im 5"10, 120pounds ) so i have the body ( i think....lol i dunno?)

I would price out different people and look at their previous work.

Then set up an agreement where you don't pay unless you think the shots are good enough. I am not sure if you can do this though.

If you had some kind of agent maybe they could recommend the right choice or they could do them for you.

I would imagine that people in the industry can spot beauty and photogenic traits without all the fancy stuff done to pictures. But the picture could play a vital role in you getting choosen for work.

You can also get a lot of photographers to work TFP--Time For Prints. You model for them, they give you a cd of the pictures they take and/or print copies of the pictures.

Check the Other Work forum for more information about modeling and having pictures taken.

Do not go with the glamour shoots as the actual session is cheap as chips whereas the prints of the photos is where they make the money... they cost! :o

Go the TFP route esp. if you are going to be an independent model (no agency).

Thanks to www.musecube.com and www.ozmodel.com.au I was able to develop a real good portfolio of images thru TFP. I tried to cover all areas and work out which photography styles I liked best and worked best in....

When you put up a portfolio on these model sites be specific as to what you will and won't do. You can check out various portfolios (including mine) on both sites for an idea.

I would always chat with the photographer via email prior to a face2face meeting. At the face2face meeting I would review his 'body of work' if I hadn't already done so prior as well as work out anything else prior to the actual photo shoot. I also made sure that I did 'outdoor' photo shoots with photographers I was working with for the first time.

There is only one photographer I have worked with where I did studio work.

I think you need to talk to some agencies and see if they want you. They will direct you to the appropriate photographers.

Woah....good thing my boyfriend is a professional graphic designer....he makes my photos look soooooooooooo good with minor changes...its worth it for the professionals I think....unless you can get some guy to do it for you for free without trying to get into the panties...unless you like him....airbrushing rocks! My photos that are in the local newsrag every week are amazing...and they only have minor airbrush!

    Just a little advice:

    1. Get a look at a real good sampling of their past work.
    2. Ask for references and check them well.
    3. Set boundries ahead of time, what you will and won't do.
    4. Ask if you can bring an escort, even if you don't plan to. A legit photographer won't have an issue with it.

Most photographers are really great guys/gals and are very professional but I have run into more than my share of scuzzbags who think you're there to get grouped. Most are also willing to do TFP/TFCD work and in fact prefer it.

As for having work touched up i'm lucky enough to be an artist to begin with and a geek secondly so I do all of my own editing.

    Check out OMP Http://www.onemodelplace.com
I have a portfolio there and if I, a 32 year old mother of three can find good photographers to work with i'm sure you can!

And remember CHECK REFERENCES! It's one of the best way to weed out the weirdos.

I addressed this in "Other Work."
I'm happy to give a model samples of hundreds of pictures.
I'm happy to give her references of every model I've worked with.
I'm happy to have boundaries set and to stay within them and do everything I can to ensure her comfort.

But I balk at an escort. I want to do the best job I can. I have found out that my work isn't at its best with someone looking over my shoulder. I do respect the right of a model to have someone present and, if she insists, will refer her to a good photographer who won't mind.

Also, please be aware that generally TFP means that the photographer has full use of your photographs, or at least the use that's spelled out in the MRF (model release form).

    **Later Edit**

Mermaid, if you look anything close to your avatar, I would imagine there would be all kinds of photographers who would want to work with you. The other people here have offered very good advice, and you should take it to heart. Watch out for the pervs.

Definately do NOT go with glamour shots, those pics are worthless. Get a photographer that will take excellent stock photos. Anyone can touch up pics from there. Myself included if need be. But I'm sure you will have no troubles finding someone in your area to help.

    Jay,

A proper escort doesn't get in the way, hell they could be sitting completely outside the work area!

I personally have only brought one to one shoot and that was simply because the photographers place was on the side of a mountain and you needed a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to it. Damned if I was going to end up someone's lampshade! hehe He turned out to be very good by the way but it never hurts to be safe. You might be legit but there are a lot who aren't

if this is for a modeling portfolio just get some TFP's, no touchups. if you do something and then you get a job and you don't look exactly like your pics then the people paying you are gonna be pissed. I do regular TFP's and ask for manip rights. then I can use the unmodified pics for my portfolio and then modify pics for myself, either for friends or sale useually. on some portfolios I also will include modified pics, but I like to say that thery are modified and that I did it myself.

here is an example of what I mean:
    http://www.modelingpage.com/mypage.cfm?ID=3360

also a note on agencies who reccomend photographers. they sometimes make thier money from YOU and not the client, who knows if there even are clients? really TFP is your best bet, just be careful, again BE CAREFUL.
