Default Favorite Dancing Movie

Just curious about what other dancers favorite movies (about dancing) are? I just recently rented a documentary about the business that I was really disappointed in, but I really enjoyed Dancing at the Blue Iguana.

Curious about other's opinions....

Exotica may be my favorite exotic dancing movie (although it's not really about exotic dancing). My favorite dancing movie is probably The Red Shoes by Powell and Pressburger.

My fave movie is "Girls just wanna have fun". Its not about stripping, but it has to do with a dance competition.
Sarah Jessica Parker is in it (shes like 18 years old in this movie) LOL, Helen Hunt (young as hell too) and Shannon Doherty (She LOOKS 12 in this movie)
Anyway its a cheesy 80's flick, but soooooo awesome to watch when you are bored at home and wanna see some 80's cheese.
I love this movie!

p.s. this movie inspired me to learn a cartwheel when I was 9. LOL

My favorite dance movie is White Nights with Barishnikov and Gregory Hines. My mom has a huge crush on Barish ever since he performed with Bolshoi when she was a student in Moscow. I even have a print of him in full releveille on my wall now. So she made me watch it many times. Its a good little movie with several ballet/tap dance scenes.

Gregory Hines is incredible, and everyone always told me I look just like Isabella Rosselini when she made that movie....its one of my all time favorites!!!

Yeah, absolutely Exotica! The "visuals" are good. You'd have to see it.

Dancing at the Blue Iguana is also good. It shows some of the struggles that girls go through.

OMG...White Nights? I thought I was the only one who loved this movie!!! I loved both dancers!! I used to watch Baryshnikov's The Nutcracker every year (on channel 11) since I was, like 4 years old. He was the reason why I took Ballet. I loved his dancing. And Gregory Hines was absolutely amazing...

Weeeeeeee Lexi! LOL.. That's one of my faves too! I used the song "Technique" (From the last competition song) in one of my pagent routines.. Bought the whole entire soundtrack just for that song.. lol.. And I tell ya, Lee was definitely the dreamiest back in those days.. hehe

As for my fave dancing movie, I'm really not sure. Striptease was very good, in my opinion, but there was not enough of Demi on stage.. The stage time she did have in the movie though, was excellent. Her routines kicked ass.

Showgirls.. BLAH! That definitely WAS NOT dancing. It was more of a seizure, I'd say. And, I definitely couldn't get passed that rape scene without running to the bathroom. It was horrible. I actually just recently bought both Striptease and Showgirls off ebay, because my hubby hadn't seen either one. He barely got through "Showgirls". He referred to Elizabeth Berkley as a "Filthy McNasty with Extra Cheese". Heh. But, the best part of that movie, was Gina Gershon. Yeah baby, yeah!

I have to go with Exotica also. I found Showgirls to be a let down. Lexi, that was my favorite movie also. loved it .

I have yet to find one that really shows how the dancing industry really is. So far the closest I have come is Dancing at the Blue Iguna. I love the documentary on the DVD. But yeah I'd love to do my own movie something between a comedy and a drama but REAL!

Expecting realistic portrayal of strip clubs from Hollywood ? Yeah, right !

IMHO the club scenes in 'Blue Iguana' were a long way from reality - especially the part showing customers throwing money LOL

The only part of 'Showgirls' which seemed realistic was the scene where the club manager forced the dancer to do a very high contact private dance in exchange for a wad of cash (from which the club took its cut).

As far as overall portrayal of a club and dancers, 'Striptease' was probably the closest to being plausible - with the huge exception of allowing one of the dancer's daughter to be backstage at the club.

Wait a second....I thought this was about favorite movies.

Scripeted Motion Picture Entertainment (like strip clubs for customers) are about fantasy. Movies are supposed to be just realistic enough to let the audience believe they are true. Saying you expect movies to be an accurate portrayal of real strip clubs is like saying you expect every customer to really be your boyfriend.

If you want to see a slice of life....see a documentary, like HBO's Divas.

And I agree....Showgirls...yuck... Nomee....no thanx.

I'm a sucker for old musicals from the 40's and 50's. Kiss me Kate, Singing in the Rain, as for more recent stuff, Center Stage is good, it's about students at a New York ballet school. It has some great modern dance in it.

center stage was a cool movie. i totally forgot about that one! that's one of my faves, too. i will get that dvd. i loved the dance the students did- the newer one. and susan, i used to watch great performances or something like that on pbs and it talked about those old movies. i think that eras in general ahd more skills and talent cause just about everyone did singing, dancing, and acting.

Dancing at the Blue Iguana was the best one, but so depressing! They "peeked" into the lives of how many strippers, and coudn't have one that was just happy? lol, not all of us are drama, drama, drama the majority of our lives.
