    Default knee surgery?

has anyone here ever had an injury like this?

when i was in high school i played softball, i was a pitcher. 3 years ago I was playing a game when a girl hit a ball right back at me, hit my knee, and took me out (the ball on my knee made the most gruesome noise ever). Originally x-rays didnt' show anything so I just figured I would get better over time - wrong. I ended up losing my scholarships for swimming because I could no longer swim breast stroke because my knee hurt so much. A year later the dr's did another x-ray because it hurt so much still, this time they found a shadow. MRI was done, and they found that i had torn my miniscus (sp?) It wasn't torn completly they said, they told me I had about a milimeter left and that before I could get surgery I would need to tear it completly. So here I am three years later, and I wake up all the time because my knee hurts so bad, I also figure skate still, and owww it just hurts so bad all the time now a days, no matter what I'm doing...so I think it's torn all the way now....I'm going to go to my dr when I move home for the summer in a month, however has anyone had surgery for a torn miniscus?? How does recovery go? How long? Did you feel stronger after it, or just a waste of time? (one of the guys I skate with had a similar surgery done and he still is in as much pain as before, he had qualified for nationals last year and now he is barely able to jump)

    thanks!

    Default Re:knee surgery?

Well I have had surgery on both my knees. I have torn my ACL in both and have a tear in my Miniscus on one knee. I had my bad knee with torn miniscus scoped 18 years ago, they mainly cleaned my knee out, not repairing anything and my knee felt tons better after surgery. That said the knee is not stable because the acl is still gone and I now have arthritis in it.

I had reconstructive ACL surgery on my other knee three years ago. The surgery was ok but I was bed bound for about a week. It took about 2 years for my knee to fully heal and the pain to go away, I also had a hamstring graft and even to this day my hamstring is not 100%. The good news is 3 years after surgery my knee feels stronger than it ever has and almost no pain. I can do everything I could before I tore it.

I have not looked back, I still have some knee pain that I will have for the rest of my life but nothing compared to the pain I had pre surgery, I'm very happy. Now that was an ACL rebuilt so its not the same as the miniscus but I'm told the recovery and rehab are about the same.

Here is a site with some good info-

One word of advice, if you decide to go for the surgery, research and make sure to get a specialist in this area. If your in a small town/city I would travel to a big city just to get the right doctor. I did some research and used the same doctor that did all the same surgeries for the Houston Rocket players. I had to pay more than a standard in plan doctor but I wanted the best. I'm glad I did and I plan to do the other knee down the road when I get mentaly ready.

    Good luck.
