    Default Nina Simone, etc

Anyone dance to classics - Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Astrud Gilberto (Girl from Impanema is her most famous, but all ehr work is amazing) Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima??? If so which songs?

On the other end of the spectrum:
My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult ("Lick my Boots" is SO perfect with the obvious right outfit)
Godhead (their dark version of "Eleanor Rigby" would be interesting to see pulled off)
Porno-Techno remake of the Speed Racer theme?

Or atmospheric stuff like Dead Can Dance, Air, Four Tet??

    thanks for input, all.

I realize clubs wouldn't allow any of the "classic" stuf played, just wondering if there are any songs I'm forgetting about - come to think of it I seem to remember that there's a version of You Can Leave Your Hat On done by Etta James...

Girl From Ipanema is one of my jazzy favorites. I can't use it at work, as the Portuguese lyrics tend to throw off customers. I love it though.

I play "Crazy" by Patsy Cline once a year or so. It takes a certain mood. You know. . .

Dead can dance has been a favorite of mine for years. I never had the nerve to play any of that stuff. Besides, that's MY music. I can't let strangers share the moment with me when I listen to them. That's too damn intimate. So I listen to it at home. I like playing Delerium at work. It's kinda ethereal too. Cocateau Twins faze fizzled out really fast.

You'll get suprisingly good feedback if you play hard edged dark rock. Think Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

All I can think of now.

Here are some jazzie/blues cuts if your feeling you want to bring it in to your club...I used to dance to these myself...but you're right it does take a certain mood, you need to feel it!

    Venus Malone, one on one
John Lee Hooker, it serves me right to suffer
eric clapton, have you ever loved a woman
    pink, free
solomon burke, don't give up on me
cassandra wilson,if loving you is wrong or crazy (remakes)

Let me know if you like 'em!

Dead Can Dance are really big in the bellydance community, especially among tribal dancers.

i made this great Brazil set with Girl from Ipanema plus this song off of "Red, Hot, and Rio" called E Preciso Perdoar by Cesaria Evora and Caetano Veloso. Of course they would not let me play it!!!

    Weluckyfew,
I love all of the groups you named, TKK, Air, etc....! If you live in Austin, they are way more open about the music they allow the girls to dance to, especially in places like Expose and the Crazy Lady (from what I hear). I also heard some less popular techno at Yellow Rose.....one of the perks about being such a musical city. I miss it in Houston, getting tired of "Running with the Devil" but it makes me bank..meow!

Thanks all for the great feedback - trying to get back into DJing after a lllloonnggg hiatus (perfect job for a writer- make plenty of money working only three or four shifts) Although I have 7000 songs on my computer I'm out of touch with SC dance music so these forums, and all of you, have been a great help.

There are plenty of lists of mainstream SC songs in some of the other forum threads, was just trying to figure out how far people are pushing the envelope. As a DJ I'm anal-retentive about trying to play the best music for each entertainer, and if I can find something new and different she kicks ass to it makes us both more money.

Sorry to hear the wouldn't let you do the Brazilian set, Red, Hot and Rio is a great CD. Looking at Austin clubs I've been leaning toward Crazy Lady as a place to try and get in - seems laid back and more fun, good old fashioned down-and-dirty club (by which I mean no dress code, no gourmet chef menu, etc) might be a nice place for me to get my wings back. Anyone else from Texas had any experiences there?
