There are tons of sunless tanners on the market and some totally suck while others are quite good. But not each one works for everyone--you have to play around with different brands.
A sunless tanner without bronzer will give you a tan that won't run at all--it's pretty much like a real tan, except it doesn't last as long and when it starts to fade, it can do so unevenly (exfoliating on a regular basis and especially BEFORE you apply it helps this). It does take some practice to get good at using sunless tanner and can be a pain in the ass, but if you take the time, it can look great and won't do any lasting damamge like the sun or tanning beds can.
One of the ones I've found to be easiest to use is the Neutrogena spray. There's also the Neutrogena Sunless Tanner and Bronzer in One foam. Works well because you can see where you've already put it. But you can't do much besides stay home for at least 6 hours until it's set, because the bronzer (as you experienced) will run if you sweat or get wet or anything (it also doesn't look very natural, in my experience). But after you wash off the bronzer, the tan it leaves you with does look great.
