    Default Hair extensions

I was woundering what people thought of hair extensions. I kno some people think they look nasty but i have seen some nice ones, there probaly expansive though. My hair is just above my shoulders and is naturally straigh and blonde i was thinking extensions might look nice. Does anyone here have them and if so are they are to maintain and expansive?

i'm a woman of colour and i use extensions u maintain them just like your own hair. it can be costly, so you have to take time to look after them if you want them to last. Most black dancers use them and i know lots of white dancers that do too

Just like everything else in life, extensions can look good or bad. There are several ways to have hair attached to your own hair and the method you choose, skill of your hairstylist and type of hair will determine whether the ones you select will look nice or not. The cost can climb, but quality is what you're going for so expect to spend money to look good. I get my hair braided into microbraids often and they are braided only a few inches down and left loose. My hair is naturally curly/wavy so its flat ironed before I get it braided and they braid very small sections because if I got large braids my hair would curl and show through the extensions. I pay $200-$225 for my braids and $75 to $125 for the hair that I use. My basic color costs about $80/85 with shipping and then buying a packet of hair for highllights like red or blonde is another $20 to $40 from a local store. I use 26in extensions these:http://www.texasbeautysupplies.com/bulitstraigy.html. The good thing is this hair isn't too super straight and it isn't too thick, plus when you wash it it has a nice natural wave to it and it doesn't tangle very easily.

Other girls that wear braids are able to find hair local that looks nice and that they like and don't spend nearly the money that I do, but like I said quality is more important. I get my hair done in a shop in 4.5 to 5 hours, as opposed to over someone's house all day long, and they do very very good work. I never have problems with braids coming loose or other issues and if anything does go wrong you go back and they fix it for free.

Find a method that is right for your type of hair that will cause the least chance of damage to your natural hair and that fits your lifestyle. Don't get braid or hidden braid extensions if you don't like to comb/style your natural hair b/c they require lots of care and attention. Try tracks or bonding if you want to change your hair often and don't want a style that is high maintenance. Try fusion or interlocking if you want something really natural and more permanent. Thats just the beginning of your options, just do a little research and figure whats best for you.

I also have straight, shoulder length blonde hair that I've been growing out. Since I don't want to damage my hair any more than necessary I believe it's worth it to splurge for really good extensions.

The kind I get are pieces of hair braided into tiny braids with my own hair. They use a tiny heat seal to secure them. Although I have a lot of hair my strands are fine and I would never do the glue extensions because they are too damaging on my type of hair but I think a little spirit gum is o.k.

They last for 3-4 months depending on how fast your hair grow and how well you take care of them. I've paid up to $1200 for them but the guy who does mine now is great and does them for $600-$1000 depending on your hair and what you want. He is a stylist who works out of his own studio in NYC and he also does alot of fashion and celebrity shoots so he really knows what he's doing.

Anyway I love them! Guys definitely love my long hair and I feel more confident with the extra length and for me that equals more $$$.

Good luck whichever way you decide to go!

I have a short haircut but I use really nice, long wigs for work. I part my hair horizontally near the hairline, leaving a little less than an inch of hair out in the front, then put the wig on, so my hairline is visible in the front, and nobody, not even the other girls at the club (much less the guys), knows that its not all mine.

Yes extensions can be expensive to maintain properly,it depends on how much the stylist charges to put it in and how fast your hair grows. When get them put in, if at all possible,go to a stylist who also a good colorist because in order for blonde hair to look natural, it needs 4 or 5 colors blended in.You want a stylist who understands that. Also if the sylist is not a good cutter, go to a good salon who does precision hair cuts. The right hair cut can make or break a weave.

This is all too true. Do not let your friend cut your extensions b/c you decided once you got home or the next week that they are too long. The hair is already tapered to be thinner near the end, but if you cut off more than an inch you are gonna have blunt ends and look crazy. Get your extensions cut at a shop unless you and your friends personally are comfortable and familiar and skilled with using a razor to do trimming and feathering. Once you cut it with regular scissors you will have to use a razor to feather your ends so you won't look like you took cutting shears to your hair. I have seen this look often and it is not pretty. Also, ask around and call around and tell the shops you call that you have extensions when you ask about styling and cutting b/c all shops are not familiar with cutting extensions either.

I wish I knew this two weeks ago! I decided that my extensions were too long, and took and inch or so off by myself...it does not look so hot...I'll be sure to tell my stylist to feather the ends next time!

I have been getting hair extentions for over three years,,,and I have tried almost every method on the market. I am also a hair stylist and esthetician as well as a dancer. The method that has worked the best for me is called Great Lengths. They are fairly expensive, but they are realy, quality human hair, can be coloured etc. and they last for about 6 months on me...of course that all depends on how you care for them and haw strong your own hair is. They are not damaging (again, as long as you are taking care of them as instructed) and they are so realistic looking and feeling that you honestly forget they are extentions! Check out the website... I think it's www.greatlengths.com but not sure,,,do a search.
I have nothing but praise for this method.

Foxee, the has found you of a misdemeanor weave crime so whatever you are doing when you get this message and run, don't walk, to the nearest Sally's or quality beauty supply store near you and buy a feathering comb or a feathering razor. Since you only cut a little, if you trust yourself, you can take the comb or razor and bring it down lightly over a small section of about an inch from the ends. If this small section goes well you have a general idea of what to do to fix the ends all over.

If you feel like leaving well enough alone find a place that does extensions and tell em your situation and they should be able to straighten you up. Don't be afraid, I was found of this crime also and more than once. You can always try using or curling irons to make it look better until you come up with a more permanent solution. My second time around I thought different type of hair, different results, same scissors. My do-it-yourself gene does me in often. And honest to goodness, I was looking for the run smiley so I could tell Foxee to run to sally's but they didn't have it and I found the judge and guilty and got carried away lol. So don't be  with me.

And for Digital Love, you can glue them back in the proper order to preserve the cut. My friends who were in high school and loved to keep their hair clean, but couldn't afford to buy fresh hair as often as they would like took them out in specific order and put them back in the same way. Do this in the bathroom for less aggravation. Start in the back at the nape of your neck and work your way up to the crown. Lay each track in order from last to first, for the back of your head, on the counter in your bathroom. This is one section, repeat this with the left and right sides and additional areas around the crown if necessary. My friend lays back of the head tracks to the right, right tracks and left tracks are put in little stacks on the left and crown tracks are put on tissue paper on the back of the toilet. Hope it helps, but no matter how you do it organize them in a manner that you will remember their order and it should be no problem. Good luck.

I say if you have cute hair now it is not worth damagaing your hair or spending hundreds of dollars for a few more inches that will be a pain to maintain.

I quit doing fake nails and don't miss those smelly salons and hurting fingers at all!! The last thing I would want is fake hair to worry about. What if it fell out in front of a guy. Men probably would find that discusting.

Call your local salons and they can tell you about pricing and different kinds of hair extensions.

Nah, I doubt it. Men love it when women do things that are just for them, like getting breast implants. You'd be suprised what guys tolerate. I've worn a ponytail clip before and taken it off at regular clubs to be silly, no one acts upset and it certainly does not stop a single guy from trying to hook up with me

Motherdaisy you sound like your saying it's okay on one end ,and then your saying no on the other, which is it?

Couldn't wearing extentions make the person wearing them feel more confident with their apperance. Then wouldn't this make you feel more confident when your trying to sell dances. At least it is cheaper and safe way than breast inplants. I think.

There are all kind of ways to improve your apperance. It is which ever flavour you like, and can afford.

Long hair sells, trust me, no matter what your coloring or ethnicity is. Long hair is one of the top things that guys like in a woman, its an easy way to increase earnings. Making your hair long and sexy is totally and completely worth it, whatever it takes........

I ended up paying thousands of $$$$$ to maintain my extensions...my natural hair was a little below my shoulders and my extensions were down to my waist. I used the brand new system called tru-lock where the hair is clipped in individual strands with little beady things that supposedly were 100% non-damaging...anyways i got them done at the spa inside the palms hotel in vegas. when i had them taken out (too much maintenance) my natural hair was much shorter but worst of all MUCH THINNER!!!! I say NO to extensions.

I asked my stylist whether or not I should get extensions. I have very short bangs, which have been parted further back than I care to have them. So I wanted to get extensions on those parts only, and ya' know...he said they would ruin my hair and make it fall out. So I will probably continue to just pin those nasty pieces of hair down with barrettes. He DID say that there are a certain, temporary clip-in kind that won't damage the hair. So maybe I'll give those a try later. Anyway, my hair is very thick, so I figured losing some of it would not matter, but he says that my hair will appear more poofy if a lot of it falls out (because of the growing-back phase).

As far as attracting the opposite sex, I must say that men really do adore long hair. At my club, I have seen many girls opt for extensions--and the customers LOVED their long locks, no matter how ridiculous they looked. I have seen some very nice extensions, but also some really pitiful-looking ones. Another example, an experience I had with my now husband (which I had met at my club). I brought him over to a stage where a girl that I liked was dancing, he said "She's not pretty, but she has long hair. That's about it." To me, the girl was gorgeous either way. But anyway, the point is, no matter how ugly a guy may think a girl is, if she has long hair, she has quite a bit! I have never seen a girl with long hair, real or fake, NOT make bank. The hair does not even have to be healthy, just long.

Sounds just like my story..My hair was shoulder length, I decided to get extensions. I must admit, I did make more $$ with them. But they were murder on my hair. I had to get it cut. After that I wore braids, I looked very exotic. Now my natural hair is 6-7 inches past my shoulder.

Whatever you decide to do, be sure your natural hair stays well hydrated to prevent breakage and eat healthy.

Or get a fall from your wig shop, $40-100, depending on the brand. You can make them last at least one month of dancing, which is hard on the fake hair, longer if you are more sedentary....

Switch them out with ponytail clips, and you won't ruin your hair because you don't have to even wash it when its pulled back. It does take some skill to keep it looking natural though. If you are a bobby pin pro like me its pretty easy. Also, customers like to try and put their hands behind my neck and pull me close to them, and there is a very obvious lump where the fall ends, they will know then.....so I have to be extra aware of where their hands are going, which isn't a bad thing really.....

Also, if you color your hair, you have to buy all new ones. Lighter hair tends to cost more..I have tons of pieces from black to blonde at home....

I still want extentions though, at least to add some fullness....

Have to reply to the Hair Extensions thread since this is my "day" job. Unfortunately, here in the midwest, there's not currently much of a demand for my method of application, which is the only SAFE method. So I travel to major cities for our clients.

HAIRLOCS. No heat. No glue. No chemicals. This method is used for chemotherapy patients growing out that fragile, baby-fine hair. It does NOT damage your natural hair. I've seen hair that's worn these extensions for a year have 6 inches of new, thick growth.

100% (and I mean 100 PERCENT) human hair. You can color it, flat iron it, wear it up, swim in it... You invest in the hair ONCE and as long as you take care of it, then you can REUSE it for YEARS. Cost of maintenance is very reasonable.

Hairlocs GUARANTEES their product and we GURANTEE our application.

Go to www.hairlocs.com. They list certified stylists by state.
