Default common problems with certain types of cars

Well, I too am thinking of getting a new car, and was wondering what everyones experiences were with certain types of cars.

EX: I have had two chevy prisms (great cars) they got excellent gas milage, but the carberator always made a funky smell on both of them, and the breaks would wear out fast.

Also I currently have a mazda 626 and have problems with a terrible vibration as well as my motor mounts are wearing out prematurely. A few friends with mazdas have the vibration in their's too, though no one has checked their motor mounts (which cost nearly $900 for parts not including labor).

Any common experiences with you guys?

I've had a 1991 Nissan 240sx for the last two years. I've never had anything wrong with it - which is surprising for it's age. For what I hear Nissans are REAL long lasting.

Hmmmm.. The only suggestion I have is to pay particular attention to vehicle models versus entire manufacturers. A maker of automobiles may have three or four models that are hardy and reliable, but a few others that are absolute junk. You can get suckered into their junk by being mislead from their other cars.

Example- Toyota Camry's ARE extremely well build cars, and Toyota makes super quality trucks. Toyota makes a lot of very nice, reliable, well-built automobiles. So, I bought a Supra and it was nothing but problems, falsely thinking "Toyota makes great cars!".. I spent more time in a dealer loaner Camry those years than driving my own car. Engine problems, transmission, electrical, turbo, cooling, driveline, suspension, etc.etc... over the course of a few years, the dealership basically rebuilt the whole car. Several times it was in for major warranty repairs, it would be myself and six other Supra owners dropping our cars off. LOL.

Same goes with like GM's- whereas I know a lot of owners that love their newer Pontiacs and Chevy's, I also know a few that bought new Caddies that have been nothing but warranty work.

It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.

99 ford zx2....haven't had it a year yet, but nothing major, just when the low gas light goes on so does the service engine soon light - kinda wierd. everyone i know who has had one has loved it, insurance is really high if you get a new one though (my friend actually got money back from her insurance co. when she traded her 02 zx2 in for a 03 mustang last spring)

i had a 95 beretta before that, um...the engine kinda blew up.... people always told me that they had their berettas forever - i knew a couple of people who had close to 200K miles on their 1986's and were still going strong.

my daddy is a designer for fords so...I guess I'm kinda biased as I can walk up to a car and say "my dad thought this up" However even though my dad works for fords he wanted me to get a honda or toyota because he says they are more reliable and will be able to get more milage before wear and tear starts to show.

I've got a Mazda Miata which has never had a problem... awesome car reliability and performance-wise. I had an Isuzu Trooper which, while never stranded me, had millions of little problems and was known as the gutless wonder.

I'm personally looking at getting a Nissan Xterra next so if anyone has any experience with those I'd love to hear.

All the cars I've owned have been Hondas, I'm on my 5th one now. I've never had any major problems with them except for the 99 Passport, had a transmission problem but this model was made by Isuzu for Honda, I've had one Civiv and three Accords and loved them all!

The other night I got a ride home from one of the girls who owned a Toyota. She said that she knows many people with Toyota's who have found that it drives extremely poorley in weather, hers included... it was raining that night and we had to drive 25 miles home at 4am going no faster than 30mph because the car couldn't handle it!

It just so happens that I'm fresh from my own car quest. I just bought a used 2000 Subaru Impreza (= WRX) 4 wheel drive. At any rate, I happen to have my Consumer Reports used car analysis handy ....

    Best Used Car Brands -
Acura, Honda, Infiniti, Lexus, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota

    Worst Used Car Brands -
Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Oldsmobile, Pontiac

The above are general, based on brands having 2 or more models on the list. However, Consumer Reports lists well over 1000 specific makes, models and years of used cars which have experienced better than average or worse than average reliability and performance, based on feedback from thousands of car owners.

For example, even though Mazda has 3 other models on the "good" list (the Miata, B series and Protege) and late model Mazda 626's are also on the "good" list, the older model Mazda 626's specifically show up on the "bad" list.

If you're seriously used car shopping, it's probably worth the ten bucks to pick up the annual Consumer Reports buying guide. Also check out

Not only are Honda's and Acuras great cars they hold their resale value very well.

    [move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]I love my Accord![/move]

Miss George is right about the theft though. Awhile back I had an Rx7 and it was stolen from in front of my b/f's (now ex) house in L.A. It took LAPD 6 months to find her and there was nothing left of her except the frame. They stripped everything wheels, seats, dash, even the little lens covers for the blinker lights. I really loved that car too!

Also, I think Suburu is probably the most underrated car. They make great cars and haven't really gotten alot of attention until rather recently. Those WRX's look like alot of fun. Mel, are you zoomin around town in a twin turbo?

    Don't buy a ZX2!!!!!!!!!!
    Jillian consider yourself lucky.
My 00 blew up on the highway a month ago and I still have a years worth of payments. It's on its 3rd transmisson (1st one was 4 months after I bought it new in florida), electrical harness had to be replace twice---I don't even want to get into the electrical problems. So last month, SUPPOSIBLY, my clutch "dissentigrated" into pieces and blew a hole into my transmission or so Ford says (they never want to pay for repairs)...........so that will be my 4th tranie in what...exactly 4 years last month. And I know its not my driving cause I drive other cars too bLaH My mom got a Mustang around the same time at the same dealer, we're both up here in New Hampshire now and her only problem is the snow.

I agree. I'm just discovering how great this Subaru really is. Since the used Subaru I bought is a 2000, it's not called WRX (which is just a "special package" Impreza introduced in 2002) but it's the same basic Impreza with the same 2.5 liter 225hp engine (and also a 2 door coupe - the WRX only comes in 4 door) and without quite so much of the 'college kid' trick paint and colors which draw undue attention from cops ! I've owned a couple of Mitsubishi Eclipses (= Eagle Talon) with the 2.0 liter 195hp turbo, which I thought were pretty hot, but this Subaru just leaves them totally in the dust plus handles like a dream !

I did test drive the 2004 Subaru WRX 300hp version with the twin turbo, and THAT car is suicidal quick ! However, it stickered for about $30 grand. For that kind of money I want to see Audi or Beemer or Lexus on the nameplate (still dreaming about that Audi TT Quattro, and hoping Lexus introduces a 4 wheel drive the way Infiniti just did).

Well, the Subaru I just bought will allow me to hang in there for a couple more years and see what kind of new 4WD cars are introduced, as well as see what kind of 4WD cars make their way to the reasonably priced 3-4 year old used market. In my own case I usually do so many road trips that I'd get killed on over-mileage charges if I leased a new car, so I tend to lean towards purchase of vehicles that are 3-4 years old and rolling them over every 2-3 years.

That brings up another subject, the good ol' 6000 pound business vehicle tax write-off. If you are an independent contractor, and if you can stand driving a tank which weighs 6000 lbs or more, like the Escalade or Hummer 2 or Expedition, the IRS does allow you to take a dollar for dollar business expense write-off for the entire cost of the vehicle in one year. Depending on your tax bracket this can correspond to a 40% discount on the price of a 6000lb vehicle. However, since this little tax trick has become general knowledge, the prices of these 6000lb vehicles has migrated north to the point of being about the same as TRULY nice vehicles like Mercedes or BMW or Lexus. Plus I could never see myself driving a tank that gets maybe 15 miles per gallon and takes up 2 parking places (well maybe the Hummer - with gun rack!).

Neat trick, huh. Not sure how that one got through. Don't forget though...it benefits the foreign SUV automakers as well as the American manufacturers. My ESC is a leased company car and the monthly payments are a direct expense. Makes more sense business wise.

The curb weight of my Escalade is 5,571 lbs but whats 429 lbs amongst friends I do agree that the prices of these vehicles have risen disproportionately compared to the general trend of fairly stable automobile pricing. When I leased my previous 2002 Escalde the base price was $49,900. The base price of my current 2003 jumped to $52,800. Personally, i dont think it had anything to do with the tax loophole youre referring to. While I dont have statistics to back it up, I believe the vast majority of these vehicles are personally owned and not used for business purposes thus no write off motivation. IMO the price increases have occured simply because they can get a way with it (these large vehicles are incredibly popular much to the dismay of the treehugger lobby). Also, the auto companies cant make money producing small, inexpensive cars except for maybe the Koreans and some day the Chinese with their slave wages.

Oh, and I agree that Lexus, Mercedes and BMW make nice cars. Ive driven a number of these vehicles over the years. But to infer that they are THE only nice cars out there is incorrect IMO and a bit elitist. Both of my Escalades have been wonderful to drive and 100% trouble free (well, I did have a flat tire once ) And from what Ive read, BMW has poor reliability ratings. They are cool looking though.

My experience has been around 14 mpg around town and 18 on an extended highway trip. I do have to run premium fuel which raises the cost unfortunately

LOL, Mrs FBR wont let me take two parking spots (the ESC fits fine in one...I just dont like door dings). She is a die hard shopper and has been fuckoed out of a nice parking spot many times due to someone taking up two. Usually, though, its somebody in a Vette or some kid driving one of those yo yo wassup little Nissans with the fart mufflers and fancy paint jobs. I finally just said the hell with it and started parking at the far end of the lot. She hates the long walk but wisely doesnt comment.

Melonie, I think you'd look great in a Hummer. Ive seen quite a few women driving them believe it or not. But Id nix the rack...you dont need another one

You cant go wrong with Hondas and Acuras! my last car that I drove, I got 400,000 + miles out of it, it was an 82 Honda Accord, now I drive a 2000 Acura Integra and I love it! Beware when buying a newer car from an individual, alot of times what people do is buy cars from auctions that have been in a wreck, buy them, repair them, and sell the car with a salvage title and often times with hidden problems that can cost you alot of money in the long run. oh yeah, do not buy Fords!
I may look intimidating, but those that really know me, know me and can count on me as a friend.

And for those that are ever in the San Jose area and need somebody to go shoe shopping with you, I am your man for the day!

Speaking of Acuras and resale value, my friend bought an 97 integra back in 98,99 (yeah, yeah the one I'm posing with) and sold it this past december for nearly the same price he paid for it. :o

Budgett is no more than $17,000. I'm hoping to keep it under $15,000 though. I live in Austin, Tx, so it's pretty much always( except for maybe a month out of the year) warm and humid. Summers get dreadfully hot. Not much of a winter, but during that season it does seem to rain a lot.
