The strongest man in the world is a woman.

I think incorporating a fitness regimine into a dancer's life is essential not to mention to all people. When I first started dancing I completly underestimated how crucial it is to be in good physical shape while dancing. Not just for the aesthetic reasons but the endurance you need for dancing all night in heels is astounding! Cardio is so important for me to allow me to have the energy to dance all night and strength training and streaching also give me benifits. Very important to take care of your body as well if people are going to ogle your entire naked body. It's good for your mental health knowing people are looking at you like oh I worked out nothing to be scared about having them look at me YAY!
I think that it definitely counts as a workout, but agree that it should be a part of a complete program.
I work 2-3 nights a week, and I let that count as two of my workouts each week... so I still have to go to the gym at least twice.
If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance.-George Bernard Shaw
I did real dancing like ballet etc. my whole life, then i quit at like 19 and my only exercise was stripping, i gained 10 lbs. immediately. I dont think stripping is a good workout (except for calves) at least that alone doesnt work for me.

I think stripping is excellent exercise, but I work in a tiny club and we only have two dancers working at a time so I work my ass off. I'm on stage for 10-15 minutes (three songs), then off for 10-15 minutes, then back on...
Wow I've never heard of a set-up like that. Where do you work?Originally Posted by AnnaPDX link=board=27;threadid=8287;start=msg97767#msg9776 7 date=1082128124

Dancing is definitely a workout...however, it is not the BEST workout. It's a nice addition to a pre-existing workout. It does tone the legs, but if you want to lose weight or really tone all of your body, I wouldn't depend on it happening with dancing alone.

I work in Portland, OR. There are actually a lot of small clubs here that only have two or three dancers on at a time.

I work out in my room for about 30 mins before I shower for work and it seems to help out a lot. I do crunches, squats, lunges and push-ups. I find that when I don't do my little mini-workout I don't make as much money and I'm a little stiff on stage.

I agree... dancing in and of itself is only a minor form of exercise and one should strive to not rely on it alone.
Then again, if you are working pretty long shifts 5 times a week. I would understand if you only devoted one day a week to work out.
For me it all depends on how many shifts I'm working and how long each shift lasts. If I do nearly 40 hours a week dancing.. then I only devote one hour a week to exercise (which is Winsor Pilates: either the Accelerated Workout or both the 20 min. workout with the Upper Body workout).
