Default For Ladies of Colour - Which brand is best to cleanse tone and moisturise?

My beauty counter got pretty heavily scrutinised by my boyfriend a few months ago because he reckons the reason my skin is not as clear as it could be is because I'm using crappy products (I think he's turning metrosexual!)

Now, we started this money jar so I put all my loose change in it instead of it going to the candy shop (true!) and now I've managed to get ~70GBP together (not bad I think).

He recommends I buy Shiseido products from their 'Pureness' range, but as I was thinking and also read reference to on this site, that they specialise for Asian skin. I don't wanna blow my cash on something not for my skin type.

Now what do you ladies use or highly recommend? I would probably have to order from the 'net because they don't stock a ton of stuff for black skin where I currently am.

Just to give an idea, my skin isn't awful, but I get small acne espec. on my cheeks and forehead from time to time so my skin isn't all that even. I'm aiming to get the best skin!!!

    Ideas?! ???

(oh, and I've changed my diet for a while so it can't really be that but ideas on that too are welcome!).

Drink a lot of water...and eat green leafy veggies...I don't use anything made 'specifically' for women of color...I use Aubrey Organics mostly (and Zia products too)...and I use what will work for my skin type...which is combination/oily...

I don't eat a whole lot of junk...and I don't eat eggs...the high acid content in them causes small red bumps on my face...and I use sunblock everyday...

(I also think that my damn-near-vegan diet...and the fact that I try to stay away from processed foods...has contributed to my now flawless skin)

I keep it simple; Purpose cleanser and Witchhazel, both can be found at the drugstore.
Don't forget to exfoliate! I like St. ives apricot scrub, there's the rub from bath and body works, and MAC has a good one too.

I use Oat liquid cleanser and Oat oil-control face moisturizer from Bath & Body Works. For weekly facials, I use Proactive Solution refining mask.

    Ice Queen,
be careful of apricot scrubs, they scratch your skin. In the long run, you'll have little marks on your face.

Iman has great products for women of color. Witch hazel can cause your skin to get to dry. But with most women with acne problems you need to be able to draw out some of the oils causing the breakouts. I am addicted to beauty products, by addicted I mean that I like to treat myself well and I don't see any reason why it should be expensive. There are a couple of books you can find for women of color if you go to the bookstore. But products like olay, neutogena, and suave do well for me and they are not expensive. If you have a proper regime that you do daily, including cleansing, toning, moisturizing and maybe 2 times a week (at the most) exfoliating with a gentle scrub (try not to use things with citrus or large granules because it can harm your skin) you should be okay. If you want to spend money on a really good product try Proactive. I have many of friends that swear by it. I don't use it because I don't have a major issue with my type of skin. But it doesn't hurt to try.

Thanking you ladies so much for all your really helpful feedback.

I have been looking at some of the things mentioned. I was using Clearasil (not sure if you have it in the US; a lot of teens use it in UK) and it made my face glow but did not give the smoothness I yearn for. I had tried witch hazel and tea tree oil before with really dire results.

I know that I can afford some good stuff now, but I'll try some of the midprice range stuff first. I know that if I want to get addicted to it, I must be able to afford it on a long term scale. So thank you for the help.

Still feel free to post away any more ideas if you have 'em or strong recommendations. It will not only be of help to me, but to others in my shoes. x

I have combination/oily skin that is as smooth as a baby's, well, you know. I use L'occitane Lavendar Cleansing gel for the face. Breakouts are minimal for me. Once every week or two, I exfoliate. Lately, I have been using St. Ives Apricot Scrub.

The L'occitane Lavendar face cleanser is expensive, but so worth it. I don't use anything else! You can buy their products off the web--either their own website or the Sephora website. Good luck in your journey to finding the perfect face wash!
