Default how do you tell if it's counterfeit $$

A couple of girls in the club in the past month went to the bank to deposit $$ and were told that a couple of their bills were counterfeit. How does one tell, especially since these were brand new $20s and had the look and feel and the little ridges on the bill.

I know the pen is silly, but theres a pen out there than once on a REAL bill it writes yellow. If its a fake bill it writes in BLACK.

Also, you can hold up the money to the light and if you see the little strip on the side (left side) then its real.

Black light exam of the embedded strip shows up most counterfeit bills right away. All banks, corporate stores etc. are checking $50 and $100 bills routinely now. This is the reason that counterfeiters have dropped down to the $20 bill, and is also the reason that they try and pass them in unscrutinized situations like bars, dance clubs etc. Obviously, even if you knew what to look for to identify counterfeit bills, it's not always practical to take the time to check customers cash if you're in the midst of a string of lap dances.

In a lighted room use a counterfeit detection pen. In a dark room check the bill against a blacklight. If your club doesn't have blacklights you may want to invest in a blacklight keychain or pen that you can carry around with you. The security strip on a legit bill will glow a certain color depending upon the denomination.

Wow. It's really strange that they would counterfeit 20's. Sort of an indicator on how bad the economy is. Also the new 20's came out about a year ago with more protections on the bill and upgraded paper. 50's and 100's are routinely checked with the pen technique at bars and even Mc Donalds. I can't recall a twenty ever being checked. Is this an argument for $10 and $20 psuedo gold coins?

They are conterfeiting $20 because it's too hard to pass off a $50 or $100 counterfeit; the larger bill raises too many questions.

You can also tell by the paper. A counterfeit bill may feel too thick (or too thin). If there is any smudging (not clear lines) it's a counterfeit. Oh, and CF bills are made of paper (with real bills you can wash them and not have them fall apart) so if you get it wet, it will rip apart and the ink will smear. You usually will not find NEW counterfeit $20's, it's always easier to counterfeit the old bills that don't have the security checks in them. So, another sign would be a brand-new looking "old" bill.

I remember I cashed a check at the bank and was counting through the money as I left the counter, and I came across a bill that just "felt" wrong. I went back to the teller and asked her to look at it and she confirmed it was counterfeit. When I asked her to give me a real bill for the old one, she said that she couldn't because banks don't accept counterfeit bills. WTF?? I told her that she was the one to give it to me in the first place, and she just shook her head and said that I could have switched out a bill while I was counting through it when I left the counter. After 5 minutes of arguing with her, I got the manager and ripped him a new asshole. He finally consented to exchanging the bill and I then promptly closed all of my accounts there and took my business elsewhere. Which goes to say, ALWAYS COUNT ALL OF YOUR MONEY DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE TELLER BEFORE WALKING AWAY JUST IN CASE THERE ARE QUESTIONS OF ANY KIND. That way, you cannot be accused of trying to "rip off the bank".

Unfortunately Niceguy, coins are probably easier to counterfeit adequately than bills for ordinary use. Coins are limited to physical characteristics like appearance, sound, and weight. The problem with valuable metal coins is that they can be clipped and debased that way.
The security features of paper currency make counterfeiting $20s in the US (as opposed ot overseas) remote in sufficient quantity to make it profitable given the penalties. Remember in the mid 1800's 25%-30% of currency was fake.

Black light is good and sometimes the whole club is lighted with it already, so why not use it. I would pay close attention to how the paper feels too. Real money is made with a very special paper. Just take some bills and regular paper and compare for yourself.

If the club has alot of blacklights, just hold up the bills as you get them and check for the security strip. If it glows it's ok. If you have a question, take it to the bar and have them check it with the pen - I can't remember ever working in a bar that didn't have that pen at the register. If a guy pays me for dances and needs change, I ALWAYS take it to the bar to get the change so they will check it. NEVER give some customer change from your own money.

Thanks for the tip!!! I guess it wouldn't hurt to start carrying around one of those pens. I'd hate to do dance after dance after dance and find out the $$ I received was counterfeit. The girls that this happened to received the money through floor dances, so it does make you think what people will stoop to!!!!

So what would you say to a customer if their bill was counterfeit? Or to the club manager if that was in your envelop?
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

If the pen shows the bill to be counterfeit, OF COURSE the manager will call the cops and they would be inclined to detain the guy. The club covers its own ass by checking bills before putting them in the register, so it's fairly safe to assume if you got it from the club it's good. This is why I take bills to the bar for change rather than make the change for dances myself. And I DO NOT care if some oversensitive customer wants to get offended by my checking the bills - he can get over it.

I work at a restaurant and on a Friday night about a month ago, was stuck with 5 counterfit $20.00 bills. They were long gone by the time the bussers cleaned the table and gave me the money. I believe it was four guys in their twenties, who ordered 4 hugh meals and it came to $86.00. I thought I got a $14.00 tip. I thought the bills felt a bit smooth, but I was so busy I just stuck them in my pocket. Later when sorting my money again I thought the bills were too smooth in texture and then noticed that the serial numbers were all the same. The establishment made me absorb half of the loss. Went to OfficeMax the next day and bought one of those pens for $3.00.

the blacklight keychains are 12 bucks online, just google for 'blacklight keychain'. i guess 15ish with shipping. you also might try local head shops, it's the sort of odd thing they might chance to stock.

Interesting AP wire story this morning on new $50 bill design. In that story it says that the $20 bill is the most counterfeited bill. Must be why the $20 was made harder to countfeit last year. Does this mean they'll try to fake the $10 bill?

I got a fake $100 bill once and the same thought briefly crossed my mind. I passed it on the next day not even realizing it was counterfeit until my friend called me saying it was fake (she tried to spend it) She ended up passing it on to someone else. Apparently by this point it had lots of black marks all over it. So beware the bill with black marks.

I got to take a training class through Bank of America many years ago on how to catch bad bills and wow was it a learning experience. I'll pass on what I learned here. There are a lot of things to bills people don't realize. First of all, DO NOT rely on those counterfeit bill detecting pens. Many of them don't work worth a damn and I was actually shown how some of them will detect plain newspaper print as being a good bill. Also, don't think that 20s or lower can't or won't be counterfeited. I have actually seen counterfeit $1 bills before. The people who made them would bundle them up and depost them in stacks of 100 with good bills on top and on the bottom. If you can make a bad bill for 20 cents and deposit it, you just made 80 cents in profit. In bulk, that adds up. I heard it took years to catch the poeple who did this. long story.

Anyway, the most common types of making bad bills are twofold. The first is printing them, the second is modification of other bills to make them look like a higher denomination. The second is more common than you think. The trick is, a counterfeiter will take four $100 bills and cut off a different corner of each of them. He will then take clear tape and tape the corners over a $1 bill. Hence, he just made a $99 profit. His four $100 bills are still spendable, and when he hands you the bad $1 bill, he will typically fold it in half, so you only see the 100s in the corners. By the time you unfold it later and look at it, he's long gone.

As for printing, bills are stamp pressed, not roll pressed. As a result, the engraving on new bills you can feel, Get a new bill and run your thumb nail over the face...you should be able to feel the ridges. Second, here is the two easiest methods. If you have enough light, you should see red and blue threads inside the white areas of the paper. Those are put there intentionally and cannot be removed. It's part of the paper. The next thing is that all the ink on a bill is designed in a way to where it is not water soluable, but will rub off if put enough pressure on. Take a bill and rub the corner of it on a white napkin or white pice of paper. If it rubs off BLACK it's good. The newer bills are a lot harder to fake because of the strip inside etc., but these are techniques that work good for older bills. Hope that helps!
